View Full Version : I was making a map of my high school, but....

Numero Uno: My AutoCAD trial died.

And two: I'm freaked out that I'll be a "terrorist." See this: the horror (http://kotaku.com/gaming/world-gone-mad/teen-arrested-for-counterstrike-map-257045.php)

I mean, I've been working on it for some time now, but I'm nowhere near done. And I'm not sure I want to finish. The Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_man) could be watching this forum even :eyesroll:.

And three: I may be half white, but my mother is of Chinese and Cambodian decent. (It's clear that the kid in the article was super-mega-extra-deluxe destroyed by his Chinesiness [Ã* la Cho-even though Cho was South Korean.])

So basically (even though random dudes on the internet have been doing this with their schools since Doom 1), I could be branded as one of the members of the paranoia/idiot-inspired fictional group of school-attacking dreaded yellow menace followers of Cho, the psycho behind the VT shootings.

Basically, how should I proceed? I think I'll wait for my senior year to start and talk it over with my CAD teacher, who can bring this up with the district. Because there's no way in Hell that I'm going to some "alternative education center" for random dudes labeled terrorists and assorted crazy people.

Oh, and just to keep this a valid topic for Editing and General Discussion: If I do get permission, how should I structure my map? Right now, most objects (buildings, sidewalks, blah blah blah) are separate objects. Should I just use the union command to make them one object before the final export to 3ds Max? Or is there a better technique that can do something like save time, decrease polygons, or some other good thing?

I plan on purchasing a student version of CAD by the time my senior years starts, so I'm covered there.

If Big Brother is truly Watching Us, then if you explain yourself completely it should be fine. But, it was the parents that found out from what I read. I would go ahead and make the map.

The way I see it man, by posting this topic telling us you're associating your highschool with a violent gun game, you just committed suicide.

Man.. It shouldn't be a problem people have made maps of their own houses.. I understand that it might alarm some people but I seriously doubt IF you tell them what your intensions were IF they find out about it that they'd understand and be like "Oh. Umm <better release that other guy..>"

dude, according to gamepolitics, jack thompson has to undergo a test before he can step foot in a courtroom ever again, so go for it!

Do you mind telling me how? People have been doing this since Doom 1. It's just this post September 11th atmosphere that brings extra attention to this stuff. Dude, kids have worked with their 3d modeling classes and animation teachers to do this kind of stuff. I've seen it in the Quake and Unreal games.

I haven't released the map, but I've committed suicide, have I? Please, enlighten me.

And to everyone else, I mean, if I talk it over with my CAD teacher or whatever and eventually go up the ladder from there I should be fine. Right? I think I've decided that's what I'll do.

EDIT: Oh, and to Fatso, I gotten straight A's since freaking 7th grade, so don't tell me that I'm "committing suicide." I'm taking the time to decide a course of action and will probably even go over it with the school staff. I know that I'm taking the extra measures and jumping through all sorts of hoops that I probably don't need to go through. There's no way on this earth that I'd work this hard on that school stuff and then throw it away a year before graduating. That's why I'm here to think about this.

I got enough replies to decide to continue, but like I said, I'll wait for a chance to chat with my CAD teacher. Even if the school is against it, I just finish the model as a learning experience. No sense letting my work so far go to waste.

EDIT numero dos: And Fatso, that other stuff wasn't personal. (Not like it can be, we're two faceless people on some forum after all). I just want to clarify: do you think it's actually wrong that I want to make this map? Or do you think there's a chance that random old people and assorted authority figures will view this project in the wrong light and that attempting this thing with the existence of that probability is this "suicide" you speak of?

He means that if people were to find you released it, you'd be comitting political/social suidice..... Not literally....

Well, you could do it the way I am. I'm in a class that focuses on architecture and stuff for the summer. I'm modeling the school for a project. It conveniently happens to be made in 3ds max and happens to be a single object that is capable of being exported to Halo. See what I mean =P.

Or you could just not tell anybody and make it anyway. Distribute it to your friends under an alias....

and academic superstore (http://www.academicsuperstore.com) ftw.

To the post above, well yeah, that was kind of obvious. I guess I didn't make that very clear. Although, I can't see how I made it sound like I thought I took it literally. I mean seriously, who could be stupid enough to taking that suicide thing literally. The fact that I'm still breathing would be my first reminder. And I'm not calling you stupid. In fact, you said it that it wasn't literal yourself. And I basically said that if one knows that it's not literal, they're not stupid. So by the transitive property of not-being-stupid, you should be able to see that I'm not calling you stupid. Basic stuff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transitive_property) used in those proofs in geometry. (It's too bad you can't really write in a funny tone. Or use sarcasm for that matter.)

EDIT: I just saw that someone else posted, let it be known that this posted is directed at the post two above this one.

I just thought I'd make that clear, as some people are so easily offended by stuff on the internet. Oh well, I guess some people just wait for something they deem "offensive" so that they can jump all over it and act like a wise, intellectual, freedom fighting whatever. I never understood that, do they think they're getting internet points or something?

Oh, I just thought of something, that paragraph above could be offensive to some people. Well, then I guess I'll have to say that it wasn't directed at anyone in particular then.

EDIT again: It would be kind of funny if the FBI invaded my house tonight while I'm asleep and had some weird interrogation where I end up saying, "Dude, I'm a kid who likes making garbage for a computer game. Sorry for being such threat to national security."

But don't get the wrong idea. My parents raised me right, and I have the common sense to respect the law, men in blue, and suits. So there.

A reminder to all: If I ever finish this map, I mean, it might suck, to tell you the truth. It will most likely end up being used mainly by me and a few buds. That's not to say that I won't try as hard as I can. I've never done anything for Halo 2, and I only made one lame map for Halo 1, but doesn't mean I'm some noob with a textureless box map. Just don't get your hopes up.

If you do become part of a national spotlight, play the part of the intellectual. Say you're an aspiring artist and did what you have for the furthering of your skills. It's perfectly normal for an artist to incorporate surroundings into what they make. If asked about how it could be used as a tool for killing, say you'd never think of such an evil thing and it's horrible you'd be thought of doing so.

I made a UT2004 map of my high school 2 years ago and nothing happened to me. It was accurate right down to the busted up broken lockers. I even showed it to some of my teachers. Some of the classrooms even has blood stains on the wall.

I certainly hope that wasn't part of the intended accuracy.... (-_-)

The only reason that kid got in huge trouble is because it was put into Counter-Suck and his parents are paranoid.

Do the math:

School Map + *BOOM!* "Terrorists Win" + Paranoid Idiots = ARREST THAT MENACE TO SOCIETY!

Well, you live, like, way the fuck out in the boonies, probably with a community not as chock full of paranoid people.

Also, @ the topic creator, I might suggest getting GMax (http://turbosquid.com/gmax). It's a free, somewhat watered down version of 3D Studio Max.

Numero Uno: Use 3ds max. It'd probably be a lot less full of effort to do the exchange between 3ds max and CAD for your models. Plus, there's tons of resources here that relate to 3ds max, so I'm sure you'd have no problem learning the software.

Don't listen to zeph, he films kitties making cute faces ^_^....then SLAUGHTERS them in cold blood in his garage with tools of mass kitty-struction. TBH, I think we should invade his house, but thats beside the point.
What you should do is say that you are fed up with life and the assholes at your school oh and also poland, and that you made this map because you love halo and killing and what better than to combine the two and incorporate your h8 towards the ppl at you school.

Srsly, don't listen to Zeph, hes not even a real moderator, he just has green blood because he is so sick and maniacal. Beware of dog Zeph is posted on his front gate, true story.

I already made it clear that I didn't take it literally. And it's cool man, I wouldn't actually get mad at some random guy on the internet (of course, there are special cases for every rule). And I knew you weren't criticizing my map (how could you? you haven't seen it). ;)

And Kornman, that post made me chuckle.

Over and out. The horse is dead.
