View Full Version : *WIP* A-Wing

Well, for those of you who have been complaining about screenies of Last Resort, the reason why I have none is because I began work back whenever I announced that I was working on Last Resort I began work on converting an awesome A-Wing, one of my favorite Star Wars vehicles, into Halo. The A wing model is from Staffan Norling (Squapper_Stuffe) (http://www.scifi3d.com/author_details.asp?key=50) and I used the retextured version of the model by André Müller (muepper) (http://www.scifi3d.com/author_details.asp?key=90). The model can be found here (http://www.scifi3d.com/details.asp?intGenreID=10&intCatID=10&key=589). I also began work on a custom ARC-170, which I never finished, and I rushed to get done. The quality of it sucked.
So I took my time with this one, I've working on it since just after I realized the ARC-170 sucked.
Also, the poly count is kinda high due to the fact it wasn't designed for Halo, I'm going to reduce it later. I'm working on reducing the polys at the moment.
EYE CANDY!

Sexy, huh? Though the cockpit is high poly and probably won't look as good when done.
Also, Teh Ganon and I will probably do a Star Wars map together, as I am a total Star Wars geek, and Ganon has thousands of Star Wars action figures.
I am currently modeling landing gear for it, which will raise and lower when taking off and touching down.

You don't like having one bar? I've been here almost a year and have contributed and only have one bar. I hate it when people complain about their rep.
Though, from what i saw from Last Resort your modeling sucked. It's hard to believe such an improvement.

I suppose you did this for a Star Wars map. Model looks good. But the shaders need some work, as far as I can tell.

It's not a turbo squid model, look for yourself.
I know it's hard to believe, but there are things out there called "tutorials" that teach you how to model. I made this while looking at 20 or so different tutorials, and it's still not done. I have the poly count down 1000 polys so far, 5000 left to go.
And yes, I am working on a Star Wars map as well as Last Resort, I'm trying to model the interiors and exteriors of an Imperial-Class Star Destroyer and a MC80B-Class Mon Calamari cruiser.
Lol how could you not even notice half of the bottom was missing until you looked at a pic you took :x.
I don't know how, I didn't notice it in the thread of the same name on Halomaps, but when I was looking over my post here, I saw the hull peeking through the bottom where it shouldn't be in the first pic, I checked the model, and sure enough, yeah, I messed up and did that. Lucky me it was all one material so I could just select by material and flip it.
I'm warning you about the poly count before I post this wireframe, it's 15000, so don't get all worked up when I post it:

It is the exact same model. I downloaded it and the bottom half is missing.
Jay2645, you fail. Good day sir.

Optimization fucks up the model, unfortunately. I'm getting there, abet very slowly. Thanks for the imaginary rep though.
Also, I just downloaded and took a look at the model, it does indeed look like mine, however, I made mine by myself, not using a model someone else made. I believe we probably used the same reference pics, and the poly count on that model is 60,000+. It's not a vehicle I made up in my head, so there's only a certain number of ways you can make it. The base bitmaps were downloaded off of the net, and optimized in Photoshop. Mine have scorch marks, scratches, and other battle scars where his doesn't. Also, please note that mine does have a bottom, it was just flipped (lol). Although thanks for the link to the site, though, they have some good models there, but I doubt the poly counts are any better then that A-Wing.

I'm telling you, I made that. Someone who spent the last... What was it now... 3 months working on and off on a model knows it inside and out. Now I don't see any problems with that model (besides the lack of a bottom), whereas mine has quite a few problems:
1. The guns are fuxored up, they're just a couple placeholder polygons on each wing.
2. There is no way for the thing to land.
3. My hatches hate me when I'm animating.
And there's probably some other things I haven't noticed yet on the ship as wel.

I do believe Jay did rip this, however, the reason he did is because people here rip him apart for things he does, he's not a professional, that is obvious. However, you people go around banging every noob you come across, it's really just sad. Do you people do this for rep, or just a thirst to insult the lower class. The only reason I did that is because he claimed the model for himself, saying that he did the model. Taking all the credit for something he didn't do. If he would have given the proper credit, he would have avoided my posts, but still would have been a bit flamed.

It's not "banging". "Banging" is rape. We try to stay away from that.
As for "bashing" some of us tell the truth, we'll tell you what is wrong with something, and how to fix it. It's not bashing, it's the truth, and sometimes you guys can't handle to truth.
As for him downloading this because he was "sad that we told him his model wasn't good" is quite pathetic. In fact, thats what pointed out its falseness to me in the first place.
Jay2645
August 14th, 2007, 04:19 PM
As I said, that is my model, although I did look at reference pics for inspiration. Also, I never said I made it from scratch, I actually used a model of the A-Wing from the game Star Wars Battlefront 2 (Life's a lot easier when the models are pre-made) and I made it look a lot better over the course of 3 months of Photoshop and modeling tutorials. I was going to give credit to Lucasarts anyway, as not only did they make the base model, they also came up with the idea in the first place. If you make any Kind of Star Wars map, that's kinda a given to give credit to them, like giving credit to Bungie.
Wow, I seem to be followed by trails of flame wherever I go. I'm redoing the thing even more, now that the polycount's a bit lower, I can make it have landing gear and such.

I remember when I modeled like crap and I first came to GBX. It was tough, but because people's expectations were high, I raised my skill level. I look back at the negative comments and now realize they were the ones that pushed me to do better. Some people step up and improve, some people quit, and some people claim other's work. Pick your path.

I agree, criticism is helpful, and an inflated ego isn't.
When someone criticizes or accuses you, you ask why they criticized you and how you can improve, you don't flick 'em off because they didn't cater to your every whim. And you don't deny fault, for something you clearly did, you admit guilt and cease carrying out the thing you're accused of.
In order to make a negative judgement, there must be something wrong, unless you are talking to liars, which--here, for the overwhleming majority, you're not.

OK, first off, I'm still working on Last Resort, I just haven't posted any screenies (Which I need to do). I'm working on scripting the Porta-Turret correctly.
Second:
The A wing model is from Staffan Norling (Squapper_Stuffe) (http://www.scifi3d.com/author_details.asp?key=50) and I used the retextured version of the model by André Müller (muepper) (http://www.scifi3d.com/author_details.asp?key=90). The model can be found here (http://www.scifi3d.com/details.asp?intGenreID=10&intCatID=10&key=589).
Proper credit. Plus he released it, and even though I downloaded on a 3rd Party site that didn't have the disclaimer, on the official site for it, he said anyone can use it as long as they give credit. Credit has been given.
For your sake and the sake of all who want to keep their inner children, I hope you relock this topic. Before I post another picture.
No, I will not relock this topic, as there is no reason to. The controversy has largely died down due to the fact that I admitted I was wrong after seeing this post (http://www.h2vista.net/forums/showpost.php?p=131484&postcount=8) and realizing I was headed down the wrong path, stop trying to revive it. You got my apology, you got me to give credit, you got me to change my ways, and you got to -rep me. What else do you want?

Yes, I know that. It's like a Mark of Shame that shall haunt me for quite a while (Lol, speaking of the Mark of Shame, maybe I should change my Halo 2 Xbox avatar thing). My problem is I can make good tags, but I'm not an artist, so I can't model for crap. I can make simple things such as wheels or handlebars, which are basically cylinders and capsules, but not full-fledged things. Actually, I can, it's just they turn out really boxy, as my Spartan Laser proves.
I can tag, animate, export, make collision, make physics, make... Everything but models. And skins. I can't figure those out. I just got introduced to the concept of "Editable Poly" and I'm still learning it. I came here a noob who was able to impress other noobs at Halomaps. I'm trying to become a well-respected mapper (So far, not going so well), and I'm willing to pay any price to do it, except bans. Bans, I cannot live with.
So now it appears my list of 2 options has dropped down to one:
1. Take other's models and claim as own.
2. LEARN TO FUCKING MODEL AND UVW!
Looks like it's the second one for me.

If you have been working on this for 2 mins 3 months you were here for. There is no reason that you would have the exact error on the exact same spot as the model you used for "reference". Pretty hard to miss that half the model's polygons are the wrong way. The model we last saw was terrible from you, which was not too long ago. Anyways keep trying ;).

Yeah, I know it was terrible, I'm an intellectual, not an artist. I can take my computer apart, describe each part in detail, then put it back together again, but I can only draw stick figures. I'm trying to learn to model, so far I've looked at 2 tutorials, listening to a 3rd one as I type.

Capitalized and in boldface so maybe your pea brain can understand it.Sorry for the lack of formating, just thought everyone here would like to know that obviously I am the unintelligent one. I mean, I've never ripped or stolen any content, obviously I'm a retard. FOR SHAME. I mean, I had to ask people for modeling help instead of taking the honorable path of taking someone else's content and proclaiming it as my own. I really should die shouldn't I?
And just so you know, half the people on this forum know how to take apart a computer and give detailed little explanations of whats inside. Considering I have configured and built over 10 myself this year alone not to mention the ones I have configured for others on this very forum, you might want to take back your little comment about me being pea brained, because now you're either on the same level as me or far far below it.
Probably the latter.
Although I do have to say for a content stealing twit, you are one of the better ones. At least you fessed up in the end and "promised to improve". We'll see about that.
OK, 2 comments:
1. Stop flamebaiting. You can't say that's not what you are doing, just read your post.
2. Nice sarcasm (Not). I have said that so many times, and yet you still ask. That's what makes it obvious that you had been paying no attention to my posts. If you read it (Which it appears you didn't, AGAIN), then you would notice I didn't make any negative comments other then you had a pea brain, apparently, because it was either that or you had no reading comprehension, and I was pissed off at the time I wrote that, so I chose the former.
I was having a bad day in general yesterday, everything that could have gone wrong (In real life, too) did. I was pissed on so many levels it wasn't even funny.
Next time, read my posts before you make a comment similar to that. And one more time:
I'm sorry for what I did, I won't do it again. I am proceeding with the map, however, with credit given to both Squapper_Stuffe and muepper. Ganon is working with me on the map, so he'll make sure of it.
With an attempt to drift away from that business which Legionaire is desperately trying to keep alive, the map is a recreation of the Battle of Endor, one team in Home One, one team in Executor. The sky has been finished for it already (The Death Star II is now successfully floating overhead), and I'm beginning work on the BSP. Either Ganon or myself will have screenies soon.
And Legionaire (It's spelled Legionnaire, by the way), before you post again in an attempt to ruin the thread, :fuckoff:.
Thank you, and have a nice day. =P

I see you have obviously:
1) learned that we have smilies here.
and
2) turned yourself into a complete fucking hypocrite in a matter of seconds.
I had a post set up that was going to be much nicer to you, but you obviously can't even shut yourself up for your own good.
Nice sarcasm (Not).LOL! A BORAT REFERENCE! Were you planning on stealing something from that too? Perhaps steal someone's model of Borat's man-thong and make a Borat map?

That sentence you wrote there is the biggest fucking run on (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_sentpr.html) I have ever read. Are you trying to beat the CMT noobs or something? I wasn't even aware there was a competition.
For the record, I did read your petty little attempts to tell everyone you're sorry. Prove you're sorry. I'm sure that when presented with the evidence, every content thief has pulled out the "I'm sorry" card and then proceeded to go and steal something else after telling everyone how they will change, learn to model, etc. Model an A-wing from the ground up. Not using his model as a "reference", not having someone else do it, not finding it off some site and then claiming it was yours, etc. If you can do that for me and prove you aren't taking someone else's work again then I'll gladly shut up and leave you alone. Hell, I'll praise you.
I was having a bad day in general yesterday, everything that could have gone wrong (In real life, too) did. I was pissed on so many levels it wasn't even funny.Thats some kind of justification I assume? just so you know, I've had bad days before -- in fact, everyone has. having a bad day isn't a justification, it's an excuse. If I have a bad day, does that give me the justification to walk into a store and steal a TV? Walk into a museum and steal a piece of art? Etc.?
Next time, read my posts before you make a comment similar to that. And one more time:I did read your posts and was well aware of the random off topic crap you spewed as well as what you said about learning to model. Go do that.
Note -- modeling does not involve going onto sites and downloading models that are not yours. Just in case you weren't sure.
With an attempt to drift away from that business which Legionaire is desperately trying to keep aliveYou're the one who pm'ed me with your flaming crap and then posted the message I'm currently in the process of ripping to pieces. Hell, you even went so far as to edit it to turn it into a flame.
And Legionaire (It's spelled Legionnaire, by the way), before you post again in an attempt to ruin the thread, :fuckoff:.
Thank you, and have a nice day. =PI've known about the typo in my username for years. I've thought about PM'ing a mod to change it many times, but could give a shit to be honest. No one else knows how to spell it anyway (well, besides you maybe). How do you know exactly (besides firefox's built in spell checker)? Were you googling your way around the 'net looking for a model of a Roman Legionnaire at one point perhaps?
Also, you've done a brilliant job of ruining your own thread. Oh wait, it was ruined the moment Omega Dragon owned your ass by posting the link to the site with the stolen model.
In closing, your lucky I'm the one giving you hell here, not Ross or Snaf. They would rip your neck off and shit down your neck (Duke Nukem quotes ftw) compared to what I've said here. I'm sure that by the time I've finished this post you will have added three paragraphs about how mean old Legionaire is making your life terrible and how you're going to "learn how to model gooder then everyone else!!!!!!1!1elevendy 2!@1211". All I'm going to say is good luck with that. Hope you can prove me wrong.

Sorry but this thread was dead the minute you tried to claim this model as your own.
Edit: I don't have time to read your very long ownage.

Question...
And the SL is mine, plus, just to prove it, I'm remodeling it.
Are you re-modeling something that was already yours? Or are you using something that is ripped and are re-working?
Just a question...

I don't understand why you would even let jay be on your mapping team. So far he's done is shoot the reputation of HMT down the drain. Some of the models I've seen the rest of the team make were pretty good (Yes massacre and ganon, only 3 members only the team right :x. Must be odd man out).

If all you guys are going to do is fight about it, I declare this thread re-locked.
Bad idea unlocking it in the first place.
I apologized, I took a -rep beating, and you guys still wanted more. More what?
