View Full Version : [WIP] Blue Base

This is the model so far of the blue base of my yet unnamed map. The structure itself is just a little bit bigger than the base structures on Infinity.

Gameplay basically consists of the red team having to first go through a teleporter at the bottom of the base (which is inside of the structure), and then travelling through one of the "halls" (the structure is mirrored on both sides i.e. the left side of the structure is the same as the right side.) The red team then gets the flag which is at the front of the structure and then can go back the way they came or go through a separate teleporter leading straight outside of the structure (I’m not 100% sure where yet, but will probably be somewhere close to the structure).

Inside these "halls" are temporary shields, similar to the ones in Snowbound, except they last for 5 seconds and then disappear for another 20 seconds (or something along those lines. I'm not 100% sure on how long the shields will and won't be there). I thought that this would make the gameplay a little more interesting than either having shields being present constantly or not having shields there at all, if that makes any sense. Also, a beam comes out of the back of the structure that coincides with the shields i.e. when the beam is being emitted, the shields will be active.

This is still a pretty early version of the structure and most things will eventually be changed/deleted/tweaked/etc. I will keep adding to the model and I will change things that are either out of place or things that don't look very good. Constructive criticism/Feedback is greatly welcomed. I'd especially like a few ideas on making the overall structure look better. I'd also like a bit of help with the back of those pillars (the side that is facing outwards) as everything I’ve tried to do to make them look a bit better so far hasn't worked.

Add support to the part of the structure that isn't grounded.

The exterior looks like something from a gundam series, I would get some inspiration from existing structures from the games.

It looks more like something ceremonial, than a thing conceived and built in war.

^I agree.

Great concept though, totally original.

The first 2 pictures remind me of a spaceship.

I don't like it.
And people who know me, thats a rare thing to see from me.

But, it has potential, keep working at it. It looks very space orientated rather then a terrain built structure. Interior looks pretty solid at the moment so thats a good side.

Keep it up!

Interesting, what style is it? Well I mean, you have a unique style (and so far I think I like it) but is it supposed to fit into the Halo universe? Is it human architecture, alien? I agree with metroid tho, it looks somewhat ceremonial- in a potentially good way. Be sure to take care when you texture it.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. What parts of the structure do you think looks ceremonial? The inside? Outside? All of it? I sometimes find it a little difficult to properly evaluate my own work. I guess it's something that needs to be learned with experience.

This was originally supposed to look forerunner-structure-ish, but after a while of designing it I ended up having my own style. That ceremonial thought has given me an idea of what the textures could look like, but I'm not yet sure whether to use that idea or not.

Another thing I’d like some feedback on is how the gameplay looks for the halls and bottom teleporter area. Do you think it will play well? Too boring? Not enough to do?

Also, does it look spaceship-ish because of the pipe things? If so, here's an image without some of them.

Looks great, but if you're looking for a forerunner-esque look, then this is not what you're looking for.

Has a lot of potential! Keep it up.

It's the inside that I find looks ceremonial. It looks solemnly decorative. Come to think of it, to me the whole structure looks like some sort of memorial. As for the gameplay, it's hard to tell without a scale reference. Stick a biped in there and do some renders to give us an idea of the scale. I'm not sure about the pipe things- they don't fit in very well with the rest of the structure.

Actually, instead of adding support that is blatant and obvious
Instead(not only would this make your building look more functional and make more sense, it would also make it look cooler) thicken the bottom, and add support beams between the bottom and the top.

Looks like you got inspiration from a ray gun or a wrench. :/ Idk, I don't really like it. You modeled it fine, I just don't like the style.

It looks truncated and unsubstantial, which very much pulls away from the forerunner design language. I would try again, as this one very much misses the mark.

Again thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Pretty interesting comments, especially the ray-gun/wrench one (that made me laugh), and I now see the resemblance, too.

I don't think I will start over again. I've put too much effort and time into making this just to throw it out of the window, so to speak. I think I’ll keep working on it, maybe change/evolve my style a bit, and see if I can get it to look a bit better and more functional. Or I may do a complete redesign and try to implement a more forerunner-ish look, once I have gained a bit more experience in modelling forerunner tech.

I’ll update this topic in a few weeks with the progress that I have made. Thanks again.

the inside reminds me of epitaph. But yeah, those first 2 pics look like they aren't halo.

If you want a quick save to make it more forerunner then try integrating it into a cliff and have rock filling in the strange overhang.

I think I might be able to help you with forerunner-ness for other structures on the map; if you'd like.

It doesn't look forerunner, but still purdy sweet.

That would be pretty great Massacre, thanks. I'll contact you if I need some forerunner-ish help. Also, I can't visualise what you said about integrating it into a cliff and have rock filling in the strange overhang. Can you maybe show a quick screenshot of what you mean? You can edit one of my posted images if you want.

The things that make it look not forerunnerish I believe are the angles used. Try to stick with 45 30 and 90 degree angles.

Um, no. There are rarely ever 90 degree angles in anything Forerunner. I only recall ever seeing them in the delta ruins
