Right, so I decided to launch up Halo PC for the first time in awhile. I'm running Vista. I'm aware of the issues the game already has with Vista - my problem has nothing to do with them. In the summer I was using HMT to fool around with some bitmaps (the Assault Rifle, to be specific). The mod didn't work, and it corrupted the tags. Now, in every map I play, the Assault Rifle looks utterly FUBAR.

One would think reinstalling would fix this issue, as it replaces all the .map files. This did not help, I tried reinstalling a stupid amount of times, and I've even erased bitmaps.map and replaced it with the one found on the CD. I got nothing. Specifically, I tried 'uninstall' in Windows, then I launched up the CD and installed it fresh.

I just don't understand how even after replacing the corrupted .map file with a fresh one, it still didn't fix the tag.

Obviously this is a Halo PC problem, sorry if this is the wrong forum - I just expected to get a faster response here. I'm having Halo CE problems too, but I think I can find fixes :embarrassed:

Any ideas?

MAJOR EDIT: I fixed the problem! If anyone else is experiencing the same issue on VISTA, this is what you have to do: open your map directory, then look at the top of the window. There's a button that says 'Compatibility Files.' When I clicked on this, it showed me a way outdated bitmaps.map and a bloodgulch.map. These two files weren't visible until I clicked 'Compatibility Files.' For some reason, Vista did not uninstall these files with the rest of the game. Anyway, I just deleted them because the fresh ones were already in the map directory.

OTHER ISSUE: I've searched in vain for a solution to this bad-boy. I know I'm not the only one seeing random faces and artifacts in Halo CE and PC... Has anyone found a fix for this yet? It's getting to the point where it's unplayable. The game runs fine for 5-10 minutes, then there's a drop in FPS and distant faces popping in and out of vision quickly. Within the next 5 minutes, the case worsens and the faces get closer and larger. I read somewhere that it's a driver problem, but I'd rather not downgrade my drivers.

There must be another solution!

Or a workaround? Is there something I can tweak/sacrifice to make it run better?

Thanks :)

My old SIS based integrated video chipset on XP used to get the issue that you are having with the faces popping in. The only way I could get the game to run without 10,000 faces blasting off into the sky was to force safe mode. Try that I guess? Otherwise I have no idea.

Man safe mode sucks hard. I'm going to look around for a fix, I'll post when I find something.
