it's not much better, but keep trying. fyi, you can't sell your old spiker, it's not your intellectual property.

first thing that stands out: your smoothing groups.
2nd: lack of detail
3rd: proportions
4th: problems with your polygon distribution

post the originals?

still, the smoothing does it no favors.

OK, I'm not in any position to be criticizing here, and I'm not, but have you watched the Beretta 9000 plane modeling tutorial?

It's lengthy but it'll help you out a lot, check it out.

Use plane modeling on your model, and get some side veiws on the spiker, i will get you some in a bit. also i think its sinking in the sand because of a node. Also unsmooth your model and post a screenshot of it without smoothing groups.

And dont put metal textures on it when testing just put a plane grey-white texture on it, because it will look better.

He did plane model it and he did have some side views on the spiker, he sent me a screeny in 3ds max when he had finished some parts of the spiker. And when compared with the pic it looked pretty decent.

Also paint, I like the unsmoothed one better.

you know what? this one is worse than the last one. you're supposed to improve! practice modeling real weapons before you get into stuff like this. also try learning the program better, you obviously need to.

Even though I can't make weapons myself I myseof can see that there are way to many smoothed sections on the new one. If I were you and I wanted to make a spiker then I would use the older one you made.

Try something simpler, that model is horrid.

I suggest using the gun the tutorial was creating as a start, to make sure you understand the concept perfectly before trying it again.

Aside from your modeling method, you need to actually use your references better. Lots of people think they can put a picture in the side view and a couple others, model off that, and be done. It's very easy to make mistakes when you do it like that. Go into perspective view, compare your view with screenshots from h3, and actually ask yourself, "does this look right?" Really look close at the shape of objects, their proportions, and their location relative to other objects or surfaces. If it doesn't look right, you need to think about how you're going to fix that, then go back and redo that section or move some verts to make it look exactly how it does in h3. Spend lots of time on the model.

You know guys, copying other designs is just as much of a challenge as making your own. IMO it's good practice to do both and learn the skill in different ways.

That spiker model does have a long way to go, it just seems a little to flat right now, but its in the early stages, and so far looks good.

are you commenting on terminator's model or paintballakid's?

if you're talking about paint's, struck out comment applies fully. if not, only half serious, you must not realize he didn't mirror the model yet.

damn right, snaf asked me to make an Apache the other day, had the thing done in a matter of hours since it's so easy to make stuff that already exists, there's no blanks to fill in, it's just copying.

What happened to creativity?

Tomorrow, come here with a completely original and visually compelling gun design. It has to be well thought out; something that could actually work at least by some far stretch of theory.

Creativity isn't quite that easy for everyone, there's nothing wrong with modeling a pre-existing design.

In response to both of you, even in CE, do I want to play Halo 2 and Halo 3 weapons, and I understand it is hard to come up with something original, but the thing is I've seen A LOT of people trying to recreate Halo 3 weapons (have you not also?). I don't have a problem when I see someone say they want to make an H3 Spiker, first time I saw a post like this was when I think it was Dano making one. But once Halo 3 came out, on this forum and others that I visit, I see many people trying to make H3 weapons. But sometimes in cases like this, enough is enough. Enough people trying to make the spiker is enough. Awhile ago I made a thread asking why is it I see SO MANY modeled and skinned weapons and people showing them off, but they hardly ever make it into a map released to the public (offtopic: What happened to Modern Combat? I noticed Snaf took out the "coming in 2007" part from his sig.). I am positive that about 85% of the people trying to create H3 weapons will actually make the weapon to some extent, possibly even make an "H3 Blood Gulch" with the weapon, but part of that 85% will probably never finish their model, due to many reasons, (loss of interest, etc). My point is, what is the use of these weapons BESIDES GETTING EXPERIENCE OF MODELING if we will most likely never see them in game but these people keep showing them off? Is there any point besides the one I put in all caps?

EDIT: Since I also understand the fact that there is absolutely nothing wrong with pre-existing weapons being recreated in CE, my question is, why do most have to come from the Halo series? I actually quite enjoy weapons such as the bio rifle, link gun, lightning gun, etc from Unreal Tournament. It would be nice to play Halo using some of those weapons. Also with Patrick's new portal gun, I'm sure there would be a way to actually make a translocator? Also if someone wanted to mix it up a bit, why not make a gun that could actually heal teammates while in battle? Though please excuse me if these are not possible, I do not know the full extent of Halo's engine nor all of its limitations.

No Offense, but still not good at ALL. But it's looking a lot better than your first fail of model... You shouldn't model a spiker to start out with in the first place. Model a pistol, an easy gun, so you can get the basis of plane modeling.

Good reference, but that's gotta be a SUPER early model of it. It has like twice as many polys as that in H3, and it actually just plain looks a lot different.
