Hey I have a big question I need to ask how do I make alphas. Or whatever the kind is called that allows you to see-through like for rails and shit.

You take the bitmap you want to make the alpha for.

put black where you want to see through, and white where you want it to be solid.

I think thats the order, but it might be white where you want to see through and black where you want to see, I dunno fuck around with it till you get it right or look at the other alpha maps.

Go into the channels
You will see channels that are R,G,B.
Copy any of those channels and rename the new chanel alpha1
Then you make the solid black and the see through white.
You can play with the shades of black and play with how much you want to see through.
And when you apply it to your mesh.
Apply the texture like normal.
Then go into the opacity and then locate the same texture again and apply it.

Ok here, here is my texture I worked on while I was sick im getting fairly good at texturing. (Notice I put fairly and not Excellent.)
Well here are some results. Ill have another texture but i need to finish the bump map.

They're obviously shittily made photosourced textures, with the person who really made them using a green background to make an alpha from for some reason. I can prove their photosourced by the fact that the diffuse seems to be the bump map. Anyone with the knowledge to paint real textures wouldn't do that.

I'm not an expert though, I have CS2 (My dad's a photographer), but I rarely use it except to edit old H1 bitmaps, and occasionally make some new ones (Nothing fancy) or add alphas.

But seriously:

Effort.

Seperate Layers for everything.

Slight minimal colour variation in texture layers.

Make the bump first. White is high, black is low.

Make the diffuse from the bump, by adding layers of texture and tweaking the blending on all the layers, adding more detail etc.

Make the specular by layer blending the bump and diffuse together and altering things that you want to be shinier than others, which is easy when things are all on seperate layers.

Think carefully about the colour scheme.

HOLY SHIT MAN!!!!! Nice Dano, it willt ake more that a week of 2 or 3 weeks of me photoshopping to come up with that I need to learn more about photoshop. At this point it would take me ages to make that texture you made and I know it only took you 3 days max prolly 2 hours. >.> Im gradually learning though, and Im not asking for help on EVERYTHING im acualy learning alot on my own. I just ask for a few tips here and there well i dont want to get side tracked like yesterday I want to acually get some work done in photoshop Ill post Pic later if I feel its decent enough to show. I have multiple textures Im working on. So we will see how thaqt goes, and if your woundering why all the textures im making are rusty or close to it is because the map Im making them for is an closed down old abandoned wore out facility. ^^ Well I think ive made enough gramical errors so Ill be going. ^^

Make the bump first. White is high, black is low.While that is true and is how like 99% of programs do it... even if you screw up on that step... it's still recoverable... just run an invert filter in whatever program you use.

This should give you a good idea how to do a tilable texture. It may sound daunting, but all you do is offset 50% in both U and V and play with it until it works... then offset it back.

How specifically to do that? Well, that's why I posted the tutorial.

Everything doesn't have to filled with enormous amounts of detail to look good. But yah, there aren't OMG good. But if terror did make these, he is alot better then me in that area for sure. >.>

eeerrrr your still photosourcing all the details layers, not that theres anything wrong about doing that, but you won't ever learn how to paint great textures If you don't actually paint at all, and I'm almost positive by looking at the huge difference in quality between the textures some of those are in some way not entirely yours.

It seems you took the concrete wall texture and the door texture and put some downloaded brushes on top of them, and some minor tweaks. The fact that the first texture is so plain and the last couple are decent is a sure sign. You wanted people to believe that by seeing some obviously shitty textures you made amongst some decent ones, people would believe those were yours too. No.

I could tell they weren't his because they don't have one particular style (most artists do similar things in their works that define who made them) and the quality of the textures are so different.

I dont have the time to be recording myself I have better things to do. For instance, Model, School, Work. Maybe when I get an idea for a good texture like maybe a screen or panels or something techy, Ill record myself. Give me time Ive got to work with the flow but, trust me youll see that I can photoshop.

What the fuck, I want the last 15 minutes of my life back. That was nothing but you just selecting stuff and making new layers. Why not post some actual SKINNING instead of wasting our time with shit like that? We have yet to see evidence you didn't steal all the stuff you've posted; that didn't show us that you can do anything. Totally wrong btw. It will consiste of me making a texture from scratch. It doesnt take 2 hours to make a normal map in max.... Idk what the hell your on but its somthing good, takes a good 10 minutes at the max... >.>

lol right. I rarely post on these forums anymore. I'm preping for college and handling things with my boyfriend at the moment. Sitting around and doing nothing is Terror's forte, not mine.:XD:

Ok guys Im gonna post some screenshots of the texture Ive been working on also Ive recorded myself the time Ive worked on it in Photoshop.

I will acualy post the "video" when I finish the whole texture because im thinking about making one side of the texture have a keypad and a panel or liek a hand scanner and a screen for like opening it so ill be working longer than I suspected.

God dammit, you didn't even position the spherical bolt parts right....

Also, you fakebumped it, when you were intending to use normals. Why.

Also, your large detail is too blotchy and smooth, and your fine detail is too minimal and noisy. You won't get any justice out of that texture.

Also, that crosshatch filter doesn't look that good on metal. :|

Basically, practice making textures, and try practicing the correct way or your stuff will turn out horrible.

I can honestly agree with you all. It looks somewhat like shitz smeared on the wall. I'm learning things as I go and I'm correcting them.

Screws for the most part are not "bolts" dano and If you don't believe a flathead screw does not look like that Ill give you a reference. Dano I agree with you on the part about the bevel, in the texture. I wont be using that for the most part I havnt removed the layer yet but I will, because I didn't know how to create bump maps is why I made the bevel in the texture so now that I do I will be removing that layer like so..

Thats for you critique I will use it to improve.

I just bought me 2 new games so I'm going to go play them for a bit then Ill get back with you all.
