So, the other day I removed a trojan (msasno.dll - Don't bother googling it, it's no help) from my System32 folder with Avast. This morning, I started up my computer and was greeted by an error that said, "The system has encountered a serious error. Please tell Microsoft about this problem". I tried to send an error report, then it gave me an error saying that the "command could not be sent". I had my first BSOD two days ago, while converting a video for youtube. So, if it turns out I need to reformat this thing, how do I keep all my stuff, and just replace the OS, or is that possible? If not, I have most of my installers and stuff backed up in a folder.

You can repair the OS and keep the files...but that doesn't guarantee the full functionality afterwards. You need the Windows CD for that...try system restore first if you have a system restore point (actually...you shouldn't xD).

It is possible.
I did it once, you just insert your xp cd and install it without formatting your hard drive. It will move your old installation to a folder I think.
EDIT:
you might find something interesting over here http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Remember all thing you do are at your own risk.

just back up your gear, format, and reinstall everything.
Takes time, but it clears out a lot of problems have occurred over time.

I hate reinstalling Windows with that method where they move all your files to one folder. I still have to reinstall most of those apps anyway.

Download a Linux LiveCD such as the one provided by Ubuntu (http://http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download) and mount your hard drive within that. Then find the files you want to save and put them on an external hard drive or burn them to a disk if your computer has two optical drives.

By the way, I've got BSOD when converting lots of youtube in one session (not at same time, in a row.) Just thought I'd let you know.
