This really only applies to people who create\edit\model ACTUAL MAPS (not objects).

Need to know for stuffs and things. Please answer the pole.

Note the ability to only select one option. I want to know your MAIN editor.

Note some more: This applies to Halo 2 users too.

Well, since my partner in crime for this project seems to have gone AWOL, I might as well let you guys know the root reason for the survey since I doubt the project will ever be finished now due to CtlAltDestory's experience in maxscript being vital to development.

We were basically working on a cinematics environment for Max (and later on possibly, Maya) that allowed you to do ALL of your cinematics (one or more cutscenes) for a level in Max, then you would export the cinematics scene to a text file which a tool I'm working on would then parse and perform operations to fix your scenario tag with needed data (ie, object placements, camera points, etc) also autogenerate the entire script for all of your cinematic scene and a few other nitty gritty details needed, but the idea is that it's ALL streamlined.
We had tons of things planned for allowing you to define what events took place during one cutscene (besides moving the camera). Things like, starting a sound, changing the position of a device, perform many operations on objects (ie, damanging, killing, etc), the list goes on and on.

The best part of it? Everything was done in one environment: Max. No going back and forth in max and sapien. Not only that, but it would have worked for Halo 2 (xbox\vista) and Stubbs the zombie too (and Halo 3 later on down the road).


But like say, the person who was helping me on the Max end went AWOL and I'm loosing hope in seeing this project accomplished anytime soon since I don't know maxscript and only have Maya :/. When I had this idea way back when, I tried getting TheGhost to halp but hes too busy doing...things >_>.

max 9 for modeling the level and if The ghosts ass exporter doesnt work i just exprort it all to max 7 then to h2v. max 8 had snap problems so i hate it.

I mainly stick with 8 for my shitty boxmaps but I have 9 as well. I'm playing with XSI Mod tool (http://www.softimage.com/products/modtool/), which is free but I'm still used to Max's interface.

I use max 8. I'm sure most/all h2v modelers would use a newer version if there was a better exporter though including me. <--personal opinion.

The Ghost's exporter does not always work for me.

i use max 9. but when you flip the box, all the faces turn black which really anoyines me. I wonder if you can do your own gun modeling for h2v like halo ce, that would be very fun to do. Sadly im an amuetur mapper.:fail:

Well I'm still learning, but I saw a screenshot somewhere, I think on the Gearbox forums, where you could add a polygon budget, so you wouldn't go over a certain amount of polys.

I mostly use max 7, and max 8 some,
I use max 8 for messing around with animations/fp anims just for fun :O
I would prolly use max 8 more if my gen didnt give me spyware, and i still had it :S

and gmax with PLE FTW (PLS is more powerful than gmax, gmax is for exporting into halo's engine) they're both free and it's better than piracy.

Max 8 because it loads faster and more simplistic. Plus max 9 doesnt wierd stuff to my geometry when I'm not looking, and what I mean by not looking I mean changing modifiers. My edges always have strange things going on in that program when ever I used edit mesh, which I use for its simplicity, poly for more complicated tools tho... so I go back and fourth, and max 9 doesn't like this or something idk.. stop asking me questions wah...

3ds max 8.. plus max 9 does something weird with smoothing groups to me also, max 9 hates me :(

Agreed. I used Gmax for a tiny bit, and it was just terrible. Completely unacceptable compared to 3ds max.

Gmax's only redeaming feature is that it's free. And, really, that is a pretty big feature, especialy considering the retail cost of max.

Another great thing about gmax is it loads in less than 10 seconds for me, which is probably less than 5 seconds for most others.

I like max 8 and 7 for the following reasons

Loads fast
Not huge in filesize
Doesnt crash often
Huge compatibility
Isnt Ovverated
Great for new people and advanced people
High powered
Not as costly
and just plain cool :)

Also, does anyone happen to have a link to a 3ds 8 trial?

all mayas can use MEL (Maya Embedded Language) which you can write scripts with and stuff. Anything you write would be compatible with most mayas I bet.

I chose MAX 8 because of the lack of Maya support.

If there was an exporter for Maya I'd gladly use Maya over max...

Also.. I saw someone said Maya's ONLY programming language is MEL.. but in later versions it can use Python too btw. I dunno about 8.5 but in 2008 if you click on the word MEL at the bottom there it changes to Python

Well, since my partner in crime for this project seems to have gone AWOL, I might as well let you guys know the root reason for the survey since I doubt the project will ever be finished now due to CtlAltDestory's experience in maxscript being vital to development.

We were basically working on a cinematics environment for Max (and later on possibly, Maya) that allowed you to do ALL of your cinematics (one or more cutscenes) for a level in Max, then you would export the cinematics scene to a text file which a tool I'm working on would then parse and perform operations to fix your scenario tag with needed data (ie, object placements, camera points, etc) also autogenerate the entire script for all of your cinematic scene and a few other nitty gritty details needed, but the idea is that it's ALL streamlined.
We had tons of things planned for allowing you to define what events took place during one cutscene (besides moving the camera). Things like, starting a sound, changing the position of a device, perform many operations on objects (ie, damanging, killing, etc), the list goes on and on.

The best part of it? Everything was done in one environment: Max. No going back and forth in max and sapien. Not only that, but it would have worked for Halo 2 (xbox\vista) and Stubbs the zombie too (and Halo 3 later on down the road).


But like say, the person who was helping me on the Max end went AWOL and I'm loosing hope in seeing this project accomplished anytime soon since I don't know maxscript and only have Maya :/. When I had this idea way back when, I tried getting TheGhost to halp but hes too busy doing...things >_>.

Learn Maxscript and do it yourself. Oh, and here are 2000 Euros for Max.

no thanks, I want this to be done sometime this year. I don't want to have to be working on this while in Iraq :/. The only max person they have working for prom is JamesD (last I checked anyway, early last year)

stubbs the zombie? can anyone tell me exactly what game engine it uses? it dosn't look like blam because there are things you can do in stubbs that you can't do with blam and ce. and it dosn't look like blam 2 because the ui dosn't look like it's as good as halo 2...
mid point? or maby the engine has also been modifyed slightly because i know for a fact that you can't rip limbs off and use them as weapons and all that. lol

ah yep. now that i look closer at it and think harder. there isn't any way in hell it could have anything from the h2 engine in it
