So my dad was upgrading his computer the other day, he got a 775 socket mobo with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz processor. I had the old school Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz @ 2.6GHz in my computer, so I just "convinced" him that we should trade ;).

Anyhow, all the processor stuff is out of the way, I also got two more DIMM's of RAM (two 512MB's) to bring me up to 3GB's. However, my system rating for RAM dropped from 5.4 to 5.1 instead of hitting 5.6 or 5.9... Basically I'm using two 1GB DIMM's and two 512MB DIMM's... If there's a better way to hit 3GB's let me know.

Bottleneck?

We need RAM specs and FSB/Multiplier.

Yeah it doesnt matter how much ram, it depends the speed of the RAM doesnt it?

chances are the 512MB RAM chips you installed into your computer are actually slower or something.

But then I dont know too much about this stuff, so I could be wrong.

the 1gb chips are 4-4-4-15, the 512's are 4-4-4-12... That was as close as I could get. Motherboard and Processor settings are all default atm, just check my system specs thnig for my setup.

your rating might have went down because if your ram cards have different mhz for each one, windows will choose the one with the lowest speed and use that speed for all of them

Yeah, the new sticks may be 667mhz while your originals are 800mhz. You may be able to clock them back to 800mhz, but that's up to you.

Also, go get CPU-z and see what clocks the new sticks are rated for.

ftfy

Also, yeah get us FSP/Multiplier...and clock speeds of course.

Fixed? That is wrong you are wrong. By "them" I mean all the sticks, so his vista score would go back up. :-3

lol the 512mb sticks are faster, at least when you throw more volts at them. It's running at the right speed though :awesome:

so it's better to have 2x512 than a single 1 gig? does it make much of a difference?

You lost your dual data abilities when you added the different DIMMs.

Yea ok... So how do I fix it? I'm thinking of just buying two 1gb DIMM's of the Crucial RAM... Here:

This is the 1GB RAM I have now:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX13920(ME).aspx

This is the 512MB RAM I have now:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX14501(ME).aspx

This is the 1GB RAM I'm thinking of getting to replace the 1GB RAM I have now:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX14500(ME).aspx

That way both DIMM types will be the same, I believe...

why wouldn't you just buy 2 more gig sticks of the ram you had originally...?

Cortexian
March 11th, 2008, 04:37 PM
Because then I'd have 4gb's... Vista 32-bit only supports 3.2 or w/e.

and you can run with 4GB in a 32bit os just fine.

Yea, I can, but Windows will only recognize 3.3GB's of RAM on my system, basically 32-bit can only support 4gb's TOTAL, that includes RAM on my video card (768mb) and everything else.... I'll experience better speeds and performance if I get the Crucial 1GB DIMM's too won't I? Basically I want my user rating to go UP, not down...

How can I get the best performance? Will buying 4gb (4x1gb DIMM's) be best, even though Windows won't recognize it all? I'm satisfied with 3gb's total, would my 2x1gb DIMM's and 2x 512mb DIMM's way be the best for that?

StankBacon

actually vista sp1 (32 bit) can recognize 4gb and up.

at least from what ive read on various news sites and forums.

Cortexian

No, it doesn't fix it I don't believe. 32-Bit operating systems can only address 4GB's total, the Vista SP1 "Fix" just makes Vista show the amount of system RAM, it doesn't actually use it, hence why I'm using 3GB's.

Anyhow, I got those two 1GB DIMM's going to install them in a minute, just setting up a new gigabit router.

Bump/Update/Double Post:

Ok, so I got those two 1gb DIMM's (the crucial ones) installed, however, my rating didn't increase... They're both running at 400 MHz, is it possible for me to increase them to 500 MHz buy throwing more power at them (like mentioned before)? I tried changing their voltages to 2.200 in my bios but that caused my PC to freeze before it even posted. Reset the CMOS and everything works again...

You overclocked your CPU right?

Stay within the rated voltages for the sticks. You raise the volts when you need more to keep them stable at a certain clock speed... upping the volts alone doesn't make it overclock.

Also, your score is fine, there was nothing wrong with it with the 512mb sticks from the start. :D

edit - Your new sticks may be rated up to 2.2v, but the older ones are 1.8v. The older ones may not even be capable of clocking to 500mhz.

Cortexian

Yes, the new ones are rated to 500 MHz, how do I get them there though? Do I need to OC my processor in order to up the RAM voltages?

InnerGoat

Only the new sticks are in there? You can change the memory divider in the BIOS if you want to bother with it.
