I currently use Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional, and I've been having a few issues with copying and pasting text out of PDF files into MS Word (this is for school purposes).

To select the text I want to copy out of the PDF file, I click on the "select" icon - the thing right next to the hand-shaped icon. I then drag my cursor to highlight the text I want to copy. But when I press Ctrl+V to paste it into MS Word, here's what I get instead of English words:

It either shows up as this, or as a bunch of underscores. This has been happening with some, but not all, of the PDF documents I download. I estimate about half of the PDF files I use regularly are plagued with this problem.

I tried to use Google to remedy this problem, but I don't think I have the correct keywords, which is why I decided to make this thread on a "trustworthy" forum.

I have tried pasting the copied text into other programs such as WordPad, NotePad, even my gmail's "compose mail" page, and I get the same problem every time. I didn't try OpenOffice (never bothered to download it) but I suspect it won't solve anything.

Try upgrading to the newer version (8 I believe), I had 7 too, and it told me that version had known compatibility issues with vista.

I am using my XP hard drive since this is school work, so it ain't a Vista issue.

Try right clicking and copy to clipboard instead of ctrl-v.

If you want, mail it to me and tell we what text you need from it, and I'll see what I can do.
