I vowed never to use just any old tutorial when the first one I viewed the guy didn't even know how to turn on grid snaps. I'll use the more specific ones (like Tweek's one on damaged sections), but never one that tries to build a complete map in under 30 minutes.

You **cannot** model a creature from only one reference image. You need 2 to get all the required X, Y, and Z data. No less... and usually... no more. Some people stick 60 frickin' reference images all over the place... all redundant and only serve to confuse. Leave that extra shit on your desk or on a second monitor.

I failed when I tried to do that for the Brute (since at the time... only one reference image was available so I was stuck)... and that wasn't even my first biped.

Also... for heads -- start off with a box (yes, I know -- counter intuitive... but a head is the ONLY part of the human body... except possibly hands depending on how you do them... that fits closer to a box than a cylinder or a sphere).

Torso? Cylinder
Arms? Cylinders
Legs? Cylinders
Pelvis? Er... nothing... it just kinda happens when you join the torso and legs
Head? BOX

Don't take my word for it... take a professional's (http://poopinmymouth.com/process/character_tutorial/character_process_page_2.htm). Also be careful where you get your tutorials from... I've seen some which even tell you to box model everything. Those are made by people probably with less skill than their target audience. Avoid.

Note how the edge of his model follows the outline of his reference images... that's ALWAYS THE CASE. Make the edge of your model follow the silhouette of your reference. Once it does that -- cut into your model more and make the NEW vertexes also follow the silhouette.

Take it slow! Start with VERY little detail and get it to match your reference PERFECTLY -- that way, when you add more detail -- you already know that part of your model is perfect... and therefore have less to worry about.

Ah -- there is it.

Okay, well -- he tried... I guess it's just practice and topology at this point.

well the reference images arent very good in the first place. they dont show much detail.

terror, try to get better refs and keep practicing.

It still had enough detail to come out better than it did. <_<

that is true, the guy kinda looks like a sumo wrestler.

Its not insulting me honestly it is crap, it could have been better I rushed it I mean all that was done in maybe 45 minutes. If I tried more than I did I probably could of had a better result. Biped modeling isn't really my area for modeling, I just got bored. I'm more bsp and weapon.

I wasn't meaning for it to be an insult, I was simply pointing out that he should work on his modeling more, just in words that were meant to imply so, and were apparently more harsh than I had though they would be.

If the truth could hurt him that bad then he shouldn't have posted his stuff, opening it up for criticism, tbqh.

Also, I'm glad you took no offense to it, at least you aren't acting so much like you had been before, and that's definitely a plus.

And it's true -- the truth could hurt and he should be open to criticism for posting it. However, there's truth and then there's a potshot.

Be careful that you are on the former side of that fence.

It's a mentality that seems to be ingrained in this community since -- practically its creation. However it's not a very good mentality, and needs to be changed.

stay on topic, guys. This is teetering towards getting locked. Terror, maybe modelling isnt your thing--try experimenting with other things. I have a friend that was absolutely horrible at pen and pencil art, but give her a few things of paint and a paintbrush, and she does some really cool shit. Try something else, because you just don't have the correct 'feel' for 3d work.

I have the feel for 3d work. Its just getting me to sit down from doing something else weather it be gaming or, outside skateboarding. I love my PC life but I like the real world too. Im currently working on something in max hopeing to show some WIP pictures soon.

I would say you need to explore something new. You've been at this for so long and you honestly should've shown big improvment by now. Your attitude towards critique and cynicism has really held you back.

Then you need to become more dedicated to learn; you won't get anywhere if you don't care enough.

Honestly, you'd expect mroe improvement in work quality over a year. Not to mention that your first threads at GBX are dated 2006.

I used to have the same problem with criticism, but one day I made a thread here about a stupid little gravity hammer project I was working on, and I received a LOT of harsh criticism. At first it sort of upset me, but then I decided that since everyone else seemed to agree, and they were people who had much more experience than me, (I think it was teh lag in large part) that I should just bite the bullet and listen to them. It was a good decision and really helped me. Even though I sort of scrapped that project I feel like I have learned a lot since then.
