You need to take a look at your refs again because so many parts of that gun are off in proportion and look. For instance, the retractable stock bar, the sights, and that reflex sight. Also, the shape of the upper half of the gun. Get an fp view and see how it should look.

It's not like the ship needs to be interesting at every turn. You'll be looking out over the map.

rofl my only quick advice is... study the cinematics in Halo Wars, shows a perfect observation deck and captains room, yada yada yada... :PI've spent some time doing just that.

Overall, the design is based on Mass's concept sketch of the exterior, which I've accepted and pushed off to BTGII to start modeling this weekend. So, yes, glass super thick plastic-like material floors and windows throughout the bridge. The lack of visible windows was a major problem with the original Draco, which is why I've moved the gunner into the bridge and accepted Mass's extremely "transparent" design. Also, it just seems right after looking at the Spirit of Fire for literally hours today.

e: As it's a design aspect, I guess I can ask here - should the windows be heavily tinted so it's hard to see in from the outside but still possible? Or no tinting? Or opaque golden reflection like on the Cairo?

That is the most childish answer i have ever had off any1 on this forum and trust me iv had some childish shit on here, you use 3ds right?? well that's your preference, if you go to university to do games design, you spend more time using Maya than you do 3ds because it is obviously the better program, 3ds... 1 year, Maya... 2 years. And no it isn't because it has loads of tools and all this shit which i get off hunter, its a completely different way of going into design, better user interface, to my preferences anyway, your access off it is alot easier, make your own tool bars and stuff like that, its a more expensive program, it is used by alot of well known industries

Can you ask snaf how he did the grid like pattern on the mesh?

Corndogman
June 19th, 2009, 05:15 PM
My guess would be he duplicated the mesh, put a slight push modifier on it, gave it a white wire material. The original mesh just got a blue transparent material.

MetKiller Joe
June 19th, 2009, 07:19 PM
@Fear: It was basically what Corndogman described. I duplicated the mesh with turbosmooth, added a push modifier, and then applied a gradient as the opacity map so that it fades across the mesh.

The material was a forced wire with a white diffuse and some self-illumination.

I got the extra spiny effect by accident, although, you could probably duplicate that somehow either in the shader properties or using more gradients.

The clouds are ok, just need more depth, you need to establish a point of light then give the clouds shadows wherever they face the opposite direction, or where ever the bases of "hills" are formed by the clouds. You need to show depth, which can be done by making the planes that are further away more the color of the atmosphere, aka the color of the sky. Also go look at some tutorials on lighting, shadows actually sort of tend to bleed the color of the environment, while in the light the things true color is shown. So your shadows would be a mix of brown and dark orange, and the places in sunlight would be a golden copper tone. Since I have no idea what style you are going for, I can not give anymore cit on the type of brush strokes and other things to use.

So, I think I'm done with my website. Crit please.
http://www.feignphoto.com

I need a better photo for my bio page, the one that's currently there is a placeholder. Ignore the weird line on the gallery, I'm trying to fix that, and I will also pay for the full version so that it doesn't have the copyright etc.

In fact, the gallery is rough for now, there's a few things I need to fix/figure out, but at least it works, albeit messily (incorrect shadow size, lousy thumbnails, etc etc)

Chainsy
June 25th, 2009, 10:23 AM
Well...the model looks good, not much on the skin to crit, go look at worn metals, since human hands have a oil on them that would cause after long exposure some dullness, plus treat the metal as you would on a sword, theyre basically the same thing, so it would have battle scratches and peeling paint if it has any on it. The plastic parts would be worn down, any kind of textured grip will be worn off in places from the sweat and oil of hands....umh... the opening of the light saber would be scorched, and the top part where the laser emites would prolly be a heavier, denser metal, while the main handle would be a lighter one that is thinner.

The texture could use a little cross hatch. If you look at some of the forerunner textures in halo 3, there is a little cross hatching going on in the texture.

Here is some stuff I wrote about the site a while back. I critted the bio as well:

So, uh http://feignphoto.com/newtemplate/index.html

The bio and contact pages are done, the flash-based gallery will be up soon.

Don't make people wait for your website to load.

LightBox 2 (http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox2/)
FrogJS (http://www.puidokas.com/portfolio/frogjs/)

LightBox supports multiple galleries per page, but FrogJS only supports one. I've heard there are ways to get FrogJS to instance on a page with frames, but I've never tried it.

The benefit of FrogJS is that the gallery is just there. No need for the user to click and wait (all images can be preloaded).

As for the Bio site, very nice photo, but I'd go with something that shows your face. The purpose of that picture, I presume, is to show yourself; don't make whoever looks at it guess how you may look.

As for the front-page. I wouldn't put anything fancy there. A description that can be read in 5-10 seconds with 12-14 pt font. I'd have a link to your porfolio as well.

If you hand your card to somebody, and tell them "Look at this website for my work," make it easy on their time because they won't spend more than 30 seconds looking at the site as a preview (then if they like what they see they will continue).

I'd add some more CSS to the links at the bottom (when you hover over them, they light up), and for the contact page I'd do the same. It wasn't obvious that those were links (I would use a simple font there and preload the images).

Lots of small things, but they all kinda collude, so I'd fix 'em.

That's not how you reload a Sten. It fires from an open bolt, same as virtually every WWII submachine gun; the Sten was basically a British MP40, so they operated in largely the same manner. The bolt was pulled back and locked in the little safety notch, the mag was changed, and it was released from the notch. The bolt would then lock in the open position until the trigger was pulled.

Actually, Gearbox got it wrong on the MP40 in all three BiA games, which rather surprised me; other than that, it's a bit of a mixed bag. If you want to animate a gun well, watch the real thing being fired and reloaded (or better yet, do it yourself).

You forgot to add smoothing to the inside of the sides, and it looks like you're not exactly following the bezel design around the front.

Try adding larger features. other than the basic shape, the face feels kind of flat.

Here are some examples of what I mean:

Not human, but you see how he added in many larger details.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g237/goat987/pilotHi_clay.jpg
You can see the depth better in the second picture.

What you've got is a nice start, but don't be afraid to add that other detail in there. It will look much better once the face has some depth and it's got more defining features.

The base mesh (meaning the gun part, rather than the barrel) should just be an M6G (or w/e the pistol from h3 is) and the rest you should model on. Also, you forgot the slide catch and the safety.

Just because its going in halo doesn't mean you make it all boxes and cylinders either. UT3 and Crytech engine only take more polies and have extra features that make them greater, but it does not make the Halo CE engine a psp game. It can still take polies and stuff that are meant to look nice.

If you are going to replicate something replicate it right. If you cant, don't just say: I'm going custom.

From what I see, you did try to replicate it, but you got stuff backwards. Like the top part, where its beveled inward, its supposed to be from the back going to the front. Not beveled from the front going to the back.

But really, its fine if you wanna go custom, but from what I see, its more like a replica that will be remembered as yours because some parts are the wrong way instead of being just like the ODST one.

Custom is making something like nothing that is out there. Like what ODST did with the H3 pistol.

That's really the poorest excuse I've ever heard. I really liked that last render, but it was quite apparent that the outline (the part you said is the only thing you tried to get accurate) is extremely inaccurate. All I can say is, don't make a weapon so similar to bungie's that people can get confused and think you're trying to replicate it. Right now it seems like a lousy excuse for laziness and poor modeling. If you're going to make something custom, make something custom.

My update:
I barely get time to work on this anymore! school ends next week so progress should be faster now that I've gathered enough reference pictures to get it as accurate as I can.

http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/9900/atlantis070309120143237.jpg

Poly Count: 432379
Tris Count: 929711

I've found areas where I can cut a majority of the faces so I'll optimize that later on. I estimate I can cut the try count about 1/4 to 1/3 of the number above after optimizing it. Area of optimization would be the area of the smaller buildings you see in the 2nd picture. I over did the detail levels on those. I've also estimate the final model to be between 2.2 MILLION TRIS and 3 MILLION TRIS. Remember, this is meant to be a cinematic model if you did not know.

If you don't know what the final product looks like, this is an render made by a guy who worked on the tv series, so I'm considering it the official model:
http://www.alecm.com/images/gallery/galleryBIG_ATLcity_v05.0002.jpg

If you try to google the city, you'll get 2 different official models that are significantly different b/c they used 2 different models.

In addition, don't ask for a wireframe, my computer can't handle it. I'm planning on getting a better computer in 2 years when my current one die. I have wireframe of the older WIP(only 1 or 2) if you want those.
