Just something I saw illustrated elsewhere, so I thought I'd reiterate it for you guys.
The cylinder method was better!
If you have an area already modeled and cannot start with a cylinder, this works well.

Same thing in Maya, except grab the new verts in step 3 there and scale them out. You won't get a PERFECT circle, but if it's going in a game... then usually perfect circles are boring anyhow :P
holes don't necessarily always have to be round, but for things like holes machined into metal this works well
What happened to the boolean method
