Right now I have an nVidia card, but I have to say, they haven't made the best decisions lately...

I prefer Nvidia, but since their last series (9) is more like total bs, with no real new things, I'm looking more and more towards ATI.

Oh and one more thing, Nvidia drivers suck balls.

Nvidia, I'd like to say they have been reliable for me, but everyone I have had the GPU fan on it has stopped working, fingers crossed the card I have now doesnt :O

Going to ATI feels like I'd be a traitor, also their number system confuses me, I have no idea what card is better than what, however with Nvidia I know 8800 to 5500, 8800 would beat the crap out of the 5500.

Pyong Kawaguchi
May 23rd, 2008, 09:02 AM
I agree with limeted, I find nvidia cards a bit more reliable, and their prices seem less too, considering an 8600gts 512 mb, which is quite decent, now costs about 49.99$ after rebate.
And Ati's numbers confuse me too :S

Hotrod
May 23rd, 2008, 10:21 AM
I've always preferred ATI cards over Nvidia for some reason, though I don't hate Nvidia or anything.

I'm not confused by any of the numbering systems, they both make sense, and are good in their own way.

Neither

Intel Integrated Video cards are the best of the best. 1000 fps in Crysis using a GMA 950. MWAHAHA.

Seriously, this thread is retarded.

I currently have a Radeon X1300 Pro, and I have to say, with some tweaking, it's taken everything I've thrown at it. Crysis, BioShock, CoD4, etc.

I ordered an eVGA e-GeForce 9600GT last Sunday, it should be here soon.
So far, I like ATi, but I've heard about ATi driver issues, so I'm trying out nVidia for a while.

I have always owned Nvidia except for an old ATI card, don't even remember the name/numbers. It ran great though, and now that I've been using Nvidia, I love them. Nothing has went wrong with their cards, ever.

But like most people here I prefer price/performance choices.

It's a shame, there were some other brands that had some sweet gaming technologies. One of the largest casualties is Matrox... they're still around in the professional circuit... but their gaming cards used to have some decent effects.

There was one card which could antialias -- basically for free -- 16x by using edge overlays and calculating pixel areas and converting to percentages. It's problem was it couldn't accept pixel shaders... and DirectX 9 just came out XD

Ahhh poor Matrox.

nVidia seems to have the best cards at the times that I purchase them... I'm not adverse to ATI... it's just that nVidia always wins when I'm on the market.

WHAT? It can play COD4 and Crysis maxed out? Cause mine can't even play it at medium in neither games.

How the hell do the ATI names confuse you? They are in numerical order......and when they got passed the 9800, the didnt want to say "10,000" so they went to the x series.......

Because when normal people see "x1300" the first thing we think is 'maxed out' on anything.

Well usually when you say "takes anything I throw at it," that means that you can play it on max settings no problem. But when you see that it's a X1300 series you should know that it can't really play anything maxed, except Halo and a few other games, regardless of what model it is.

Well, my computer has bluescreened a few dozen times in its lifetime, and I'm pretty sure that every single time it was caused by that damn nvidia driver dll thing...
but i upgraded drivers and it hasn't happened for months.
so yeah, price/performance.

plus, nVidia sez their next gpu will have 1 billion transistors... :3
...but I'll stick with my trusty 8800, kthx.

edit: my trusty 8800 that runs at 95 degrees Celsius under load. Ahh, brand loyalty knows no logic or reason.

Rob Oplawar

I suspect that my temperature sensor is biased by about 20 degrees. I boot my computer from a cold start and check the temperature as soon as I can and it reports 60 degrees- that's under the tremendous load of displaying: a desktop. gasp. =P

I prefer ATI, most of their cards are the best bang for buck and most reliable. I've never really heard bad stories with ATI cards, only Nvidia. Although, I've only had one ATI card in my lifetime, my brother has only had one Nvidia in his. When ever I play on his comp the image quality on most games seems higher, even though Nvidia cards may get higher FPS.

Run Rivatuner and turn up your fan... it's locked at 29% if it's an early-model 8800GT. Fan @70% I get like -- 55-60C at load.

What kind of low tech games do you play? Mine can't play anything made after 2006 without getting lowly 20 FPS.

Naw, when running Crysis the fan cranks up to 100% (noisy as fuck, so I just turn up my speakers even louder). But yeah, it's only Crysis that can get that thing all the way up to 90 degrees.

Know this, however; if you're looking to have multiple cards in the same box, brand does matter for the most part. An nvidia chipset won't work on a crossfire motherboard and an ati chipset won't work on a SLIC motherboard. there are hybrid motherboards, but those can get pretty pricey and you might run into performance issues

Also, ATI CCC is fail in vista, for vista get nvidia and head over to omegadrivers.net. (ati has no 3rd party firmwares for vista).
