View Full Version : Xbox generations affected by RROD?

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know which generations (or models, or whatever) are Red Ring Of Death (RROD) prone, since I've debated moving my xbox to a location with a better TV but an overall warmer room, where I have heard RRODs become more frequent.

Screw that, just get this (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7882491&st=xbox+360+cooling&lp=14&type=product&cp=17&id=1149040700241). Statement revoked - I read the reviews on the product's page, and saw peoples' outcomes with the product.

I had one for a while.

Noisy, finicky, and I've heard it can shorten the lifespan of an xbox. Overall a POS in my opinion.

Thanks for the suggestion though

Ah, never knew that about them. I'd just suggest getting a portable fan or A/C unit. I'm going to be getting a 360 soon, but I'm not entirely in the same boat as you - I keep my room at a substantially low temperature and have a ceiling fan to circulate the air. On a different note, I will, however, want some advice as to which type of xbox360 I should get, but that'll be for a different thread, when the time comes. At the current time, I as well would like to know which models preform best. Anybody have any insight?

Yes, it pulls power directly from the 360. The 360 isn't designed to have that extra power pulled from it.

I leave my 360s on all the time, and never have problems with them. Just give it plenty of room to breath, and it should be fine.

Interesting topic, im 99% sure I'm getting an Xbox 360 this weekend, I hope to dear god it doesnt RROD or even worse RLOD on me because then I have to pay out of my own money =\

I suppose me living in UK, I'm less likely to get one as it doesnt really get that hot here, it pretty cold on average.
I really wish they were more reliable, I would have bought one AGES ago if they had been.

360s work fine on normal (non HD tv's) right? Just checking, my friend had one on a normal tv then changed to HD.

I got an Arcade last Christmas, and I just got 2 red rings every time I start it up. There are still problems, but I don't think it's as frequent.

I actually took my intercooler apart and rigged it to where it had its own powersupply and didnt take power from the xbox at all. Still, my xbox bricked twice. I hate it.

Probably because it tried to suck more air out than the 360 could pull in. It doesn't allow for proper cooling and puts strain on the existing 360 fans.

When did you buy it?

360 his a freakin heat hog, so when you buy it you should know that it needs room to breath, like masters saids. I've left mine on by accident a few times and it's still fine. It's definitely worth the fun. However the rrod does occasionally occur for other issues which is why it's not always best to buy a system when first released

I bought it 6 months after it was released. Is that still first-gen 360s?

I got mine in fall 2006. It's a pre-falcon model, and the only thing that ever broke down was the hard drive (somehow my games couldn't recognize it any more). I already got a new hard drive.

What you have to do is give it tons of room to breathe. And don't leave it on overnight or something. If you're playing with the 360 long enough that it overheats even with good ventilation, then you need to get a life. Kidding.

I bought my first one spring 06, and it worked until the day I gave it to my friend then a month later it red ringed on him. My second one I got early september 07 (I was a whore and got the h3 one), and I leave it on all the time, everyday, and overnight when I fall asleep watching a movie.

My new premium is loud as fuck, although all xbox's are. My mate has a PS3, it was so quiet I wasnt even sure if it was on or not.

GTA says longest non stop is 3 hours 24 mins. I get worried its gonna over heat :P

My xbox is super quiet, I have it sitting on my desk next to my monitor and barely notice it unless I'm looking to hear it.

Yeah, my mate bought an XBox360 about a year ago, and it has already gone through the RROD. Took Microsoft a month to send him the box to ship his in and then three months to send him a new one. Is that how long it should take?

I keep hearing that the 360 is really really loud, though? Maybe it's cause we had his sound system pumped up while we blew up aliens, but I never noticed the thing. Though, come to think of it, I never notice my PS3's fan, either.

My one is mega loud, I need to turn up volume alot just so I can hear the tv. Parents though it was a ship in the bay blowing its horn but it was the noise of the fan through a wall.

I'm pretty sure that, the louder the fan it must mean its going really fast, therefore louder could mean its more likely to not overheat and RROD.

If I understand the design correctly, many consoles and computers have internal thermometers of some kind to tell the console how hot it is inside. The console sets a certain speed for the fan based on that temperature. Therefore, if your fan is constantly running like a jet engine, then there must be a lot of heat inside that console.

The other problem I see is that the more power applied to the fan = more power that the PSU has to put out causing more heat. I just hope that my PS3 never starts running its fan like that. I've heard a PS3 fan on maximum and it's definitely a sound to behold.

Anyways, from what I can gather, from the start of the XBox360 right up the present day, all of them are capable of RROD. If someone wants to buy one, get a new one, make sure it has breathing room and don't play hard-core games on it 5 hours a day. Keep it cool and happy right from day one and hopefully it'll last a long time. I plan to do so with my PS3.

So if I am in a warm area (SoCal), but have none of the xbox fans blocked (I have the back fan facing me when playing <_< ), I should be okay?

Are there any people here who live in relatively hot weather?

Well, it gets up into the 90s here in Northern VA. I have my XBOX 360 sitting in a cluttered corner, and it has yet to show any signs of dying. Fans are not that loud unless you set it on a wood floor...then it roars.
