Hey everybody, I've finally learned how to make .sound_looping files for halo CE, but for some reason on vista i always get like 8 - 14 permutations. Now that made the song just randomly pick a permutation and then ingame it started to play the song form the middle and crashed. I fixed that problem and made it play the right way, and i got it to work perfectly in sapien, but ingame it crashed after the very first permutation. I have set the actual permutation count to 1 and done some small not dangerous changes. plz help the game keeps crashing after the first permutation

...I have set the actual permutation count to 1...
If you have multiple permutations, why would you set the actual perm count to one? :raise:

If i set it to more than one and play it it will just randomly pick a permutaton to start off with, even if I've set the ID to start with the right one

What's happening is that when you compile the sound tag, Tool is automatically splitting the long sound into chunks. While it's not always done by default (you have to compile the tag, check the "split long sound" flag, and recompile), it's normal and that's how Halo handles long sound data. When you compile and recompile a tag like that, Tool does it all for you; you shouldn't have to change any parameters having to do with permutations.
If you want different musics in one sound tag, drop the WAV files you want into a folder and tell tool to compile the folder; it will spit out a sound tag with the same name as the folder.

It's been quite a while since I compiled music, but are you using the correct OGG codecs?

It might be simple user error when it comes to Tool, or you may be missing something. Sound converters usually do a half-assed job and end up breaking shit in the long run.
Copypasta the errors tool throws at you when you attempt to use it.

I highly recommend to use tool. It's the only thing that's worked for me when compiling sound tags. Have you tried Tool++ or the Tool that comes with HEK+?

Step 1: Right-click on your desktop and go New > Shortcut.
Step 2: Type "cmd" into the wizard and click next. Name it whatever you want.
Step 3: Right-click on the new shortcut and hit Properties.
Step 4: In "Start in:", enter the folder path to where tool.exe is stored, in quotes. This is usually "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\"
Step 5: Click Apply then OK.
Step 6: Open your new shortcut. It should open a DOS box with the aforementioned path as the prompt.
Step 7: Type tool, hit enter.
Step 8: ????
Step 9: PROFIT!
---
Follow those steps. When you complete Step 7, it should list all of the commands Tool can use. Post here once you get that far.

Use the original, unmodified Tool, please.
That has got to be the most useless and counter-productive mod to Tool I have ever seen.

I got it working... tool worked :) but it only works with a certain type of .wav files i think.
It worked after i'd converted it to wav in ITunes with certain settings... weird. But thanks. I've been posting this topic to about 3 other forums, without getting a single good reply, but when i changed to this forum i got replies fast :D

Any WAV file you compile should be in uncompressed PCM format.
Music and ambient sound (the birds on Blood Gulch) should be stereo with a sample rate of 44KHz, and compiled into OGG format.
Impulse sound effects, like gunshots, footsteps, pretty much anything that comes from an object on the map should be mono with a sample rate of 22KHz and compiled into the XBox ADPCM format.

It's been a while since I worked with it, but if you are using the Sound Compiler program thingy, that'll mess it up the way you described... that's what happened to me. Best to stick with Tool++, or even just regular Tool. Tool++ messes up a few things, yet is easy to use, whereas Tool does what it's supposed to.
