Photo is of a volcano in Chile which erupted after being dormant for 9,000 years. Pictured is an exceedingly rare ‘dirty thunderstorm.’ Scientists are not entirely certain what causes dirty thunderstorms, but it may have something to do with the molten rock and metal, dust and debris causing static charges in the clouds. Regardless of what causes it, it’s terrifying.

Meh, color photography has been around since the 1860's. Also, that photo was taken in 1912.
Wow! That's awesome. It would suck back then though, because with those cameras, you had to sit there for a good 5 mins until it captured it, then you would spend another 15 mins getting it to come out right
No, that was back in the days of nonsilver processes.
Yup. Notice the water's all blurred because of the exposure time.
The exposure time required was obviously more than is nowadays, but, judging from the amount of blurriness of the water, I'd give that shot 10-30 seconds; a minute tops. One cannot sit perfectly still for much longer. If he did, he probably would need a brace, as they did in older times.
Also, I reckon that the film sensitivity wasn't the issue with the exposure time, it was the tiny aperture required to get a large depth of field with a large format camera, which that photo was quite likely taken with.
Here's the first permanent color photograph, taken in 1861
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7f/Tartan_Ribbon.jpg/733px-Tartan_Ribbon.jpg
Anyway, speaking of old photography/photographers, here's one of the iconic photos, taken by Henri Cartier Bresson, one of my photographic heroes.

That and the ethos that only real art photographers shot in black and white . Color photographs were considered to be suited only to advertising and the amateur snapshot.
Oh, and color film was (initially) much lower sensitivity than black and white.

Yeah, the practicality and expense thing explains why true colour WWII footage or photos are rare. I see a lot of recoloured stuff passed off as original, but can usually tell having either seen the actual B&W clip, knowing some of the colours are off (if you see Germans in pure grey, it's a dead giveaway - Feldgrau is basically a desaturated green, almost turquoise), or if the colour depth just seems wrong. The real stuff tends to be rather desaturated and leans towards the blue side of things, from what I've seen.

Nope. What WWI was though, was also the last "civilised" war in history. After that, every war became a war of morals and a definitive "good vs. evil" war, where as both sides were on even footing in WWI, and no one treated the other any better or worse than his foe. Atrocities were still committed, but it was relatively evenly distributed across the belligerent nations.

No, North Africa was in WWII. Both sides were quite gentlemanly towards each other - unlike all the other theatres.

Atrocities were still committed, but it was relatively evenly distributed across the belligerent nations.
Yeah, going to war over some terrorist not affiliated with Serbia other than being Serbian killing an Archduke of Austria is very civilized. You know, then the whole civilized part where a bunch of treaties force other nations into the war... then Germany going through Belgium to get the UK in the war..
Yep. Civilized as far as I can see.

I disagree, it shows plenty of detail. Anything more is unnecessary, but it's not really about that anyway. Though it doesn't show the entirety of the armour, it's still a great reference for the areas it does show in detail. You would need more reference images to get the proportions and main shapes right, but that has nothing to do with detail.

Both of you shut your whore mouths. I swear to god the moment I saw that spartan I wanted to punch a kitten. His mouth piece looks like someone ripped off a thermal vent from a starship and slapped it on his helmet. His chest plates look too broad so I don't know how he can cross his arms. The legs and feet look nice but that's about it.

There isn't one, but you could contact the creator of the concept images at his site here (http://www.dylancolestudio.com/). If you somehow do manage to get larger sizes, try to do so with all of them and post them here for all of us to share. Rob just told me that he'd love larger versions as to have more detail in his planned recreations of these structures in BCE.

Found these posted on halo.bungie.org, apparently from a cancelled Halo project, perhaps the Halo MMO they were working on before getting shut down.
Holy shit. That's awesome. Forerunner life?

I second that, but in the FAQ section of the website the guy says he can't produce prints of those images because they belong to the companies. Still, if someone could email the guy about it that would be great. I'd do it, but I'm busy with homework. Ick.
Edit: I also just realized this is the first time those have been posted on this forum. I saw them when the original HBO post went up- I love them. It's so surreal to see forerunner stuff in use, instead of the decayed machinery we find in the trilogy.

Those above concept images are far more fascinating than anything else I've seen in the Halo universe.
I agree. We need more of this type of thing in Halo.

Hello Mr. Cole,
Under your "Sketches / concepts" tab there happens to be some marvelous sketches of some halo forerunner buildings.
Now, I and many others, who have clicked on the images and were crushed to see that the image does not come in a wallpaper format.
So, We're wondering If you could perhaps make the pictures, especially the first one, in a larger format, wallpaper usage in other words.
We will thank you a lot and let you join our buddy club.
Sincerely,

I've always imagined what a forerunner city would look like around when halo 3 came out the environments and vista's became unimaginable. Now that I can actually see it.. it takes my breath away. Forerunner architecture and design is my favorite thing about Halo, and one of the coolest Sci-Fi things I've seen.

I'll be modeling this little piece, putting it in cryengine or unreal, and making a small scene out of it. But seriously, out fucking standing concept art this guy made. :iamafag:

There forerunner, definitely. Look at the design of most of the buildings. It's also by ensemble studio's, which just so happened to be making Halo Wars around those dates..

Damn, I probably wont be seeing stuff like this til I'm 50...
and it sucks more, because if we weren't wasting time on war the whole time, we would actually be somewhere else by now...

Actually, I believe the Forerunners found Humans while indexing the galaxy, and chose them to be the heirs of their technology. (much like the Precursors chose the Forerunners). At least I think, correct me if I'm wrong

Forerunners have 6 fingers, thus they can't be genetically identical. The shape of the hand is oddly simular, but the forerunners have 2 thumbs instead of 1. Maybe the forerunners discovered human kind and decided to let them be able to access things like holo panels and such because humans were the only intelligent life forms that they trusted.

True, but your index finger isn't too simular to your pinky. Or they could of made it so that it reads both your index finger and pinky, which would make you right.

Do the books actually say this? I've never read them.
That seems very inconsistent with an ARG Bungie had where the forerunners were clearly building the ark while early man was watching them do it.
Also, the hand panel doesn't match. Sure, you can say that it could be an indicator for either hand, but then where does the pinky go?

Forerunner's are human's; if you read the book the Phropets talk about how the humans are forerunner's and if the rest of the covenant found out, it would curropt them.

I Believe, That forerunners are humans.
At the end of Halo 3, 343 Guilty Spark tells the Master Chief that he is Forerunner, same goes with Truth to Johnson when he tells him that he knows why they were "left behind"

It's an unclear antecedent; in the above sentence "he" refers to the Master Chief, not 343 GS.

um
All Mendicant Bias says is that humans "represent" his makers. Take that to mean what you will, but I think he would have said it outright if humans were in fact the Forerunners.

Both of you are incorrect. GuiltySpark was speaking out of rampancy. Truth was speaking in theological context of the Forerunner leaving anyone behind they deemed "unworthy." I believe the Terminals indicate the Forerunner found humanity on Earth. In a long stretch the Forerunner MAY have seeded Earth with their DNA, resulting in the constantly mentioned with both being genetically identical, this could also explain how in Contact Harvest Mendicant Bias recognized Humanity as his "makers"
Humanity may not be the direct descendants, yes there is some evidence stating we are, but you must remember how cryptic Bungie can be.
Sorry for reviving the argument but I felt it needed my 2 cents in.
