Not wanting to get into a huge battle here. I know that a PC is more logical in a lot of ways. I just prefer my macbook over most laptops that I've had or used. My macbook has outlasted three of my sister's laptops, my brother's two desktop PCs, and three of my grandparent's laptops. Personally, I think that's pretty rad. as long as you dont beat the thing up. from what ive seen with my family, laptops die because people get careless with them. leave them around the house in places they get broken, things get spilled on them, etc....

the only things i can think of that kill a laptop just over time are heat, the power cable port eventually just breaking, the battery wearing down, and the hinges on the screen getting weak.

and of course, not being upgradable.

The biggest factor in laptop life expectancy is overheating. Specifically overheating of the CPU. This can be easily avoided by cleaning out your fans and vents of dust every 3 months. Besides that, a lot of low-end laptops from brand names like Dell or HP were never designed to take on a huge load. For example, my friend had to send in his HP Pavilion dv6 for mobo repair twice because he constantly plays LoL on it for hours on end. This specific laptop has only one intake fan and one small vent. It was not designed for gaming.

My $1500 Sager notebook hasn't had any hardware issues after 2 years of ownership. I clean my fans and take care of my computer, and it can still run most new games on high if not ultra without any noticeable performance drop compared to when I got the laptop new. My friend who has the same model computer and same internals had to send in his computer for heat related repairs and high stress on his battery. He hasn't cleaned his computer out over the entire 2 years of owning it. His idle CPU temperatures were 70 degrees Celsius. My idle CPU temperatures are 45 degrees Celsius.

My other friend's $1700 macbook pro can't even play Skyrim without chugging, all settings on low. Macbooks don't have vents. You void your warranty if you try opening it and cleaning it in any manner. Macbooks were not designed to play games, or 3D model, or anything besides surfing your email/facebook, and running itunes. My friend has also gone through about 3 of Apple's proprietary macbook chargers from over exertion, again from playing LoL.

You need to analyze what material the laptop was made out of along with the brand and price. Careless use of a laptop is the primary means of structural degradation. Laptops require maintenance the same as desktops, but in limited ways, which have already been mentioned. Neglect these measures and any laptop will suffer for it. Perform them and your laptop will last as long as 4-6 years.

My Macbook Pro that I got about 3 years ago is still alive and kicking, 0 hardware problems at all, and I abuse this thing more than I ever did my other ones. That can be debatable. Mac is known to ditch their customers when older models go out of style. My brother and his girlfriend had laptops that both ended up with screwed up batteries or hardware. When they went to the store to get it fixed, the Apple employees said that they don't fix older model laptops and told them to buy new ones. They had only had their laptops for two years each. Kind of silly huh? My brother was able to drag out his old one for four years and just got a new one for graduation. It's battery ended up frying.

On my end, I have two HP laptops. One of them I've had for 6 years and I've only had to take it in for malware removal once (I had no idea how to fix those back then) and to up the RAM so it ran better. Ultimately, it lags from being over-stuffed with content that I don't want to delete, thus I cannot run a proper defrag of the computer. For some reason, antiviruses also messed up its performance a good bit (hardly notice it on my new one). My new laptop really only bitches at me when I lug it around from place to place, which then it gives me the "Dumping Physical Memory" screen (which is fixed by pressing the power button and restarting). Otherwise, no real problems.

You really won't know how your laptop will work until you start messing with it. They're really all different in that two laptops can be the same build, but one can be dysfunctional and the other will be perform optimally. You just have to trust your manufacturer or builder when it comes down to it.

Yeah I've heard of some SOF guys in Afghanistan parachuting out of weapons bays of various aircraft to avoid the suspicion that a large and loud helicopter brings with it... That sounds far-fetched but there's real documentation about that happening in training in various military organizations around the world, so who knows.

I see you have never had to deal with raccoons, then. They have fucking rabies and you shouldn't really feed or handle those tricky bastards. Generally, when an animal has rabies, you can see that something's not right about it. Even if small rodents like Squirrels were to contract rabies, they would die rather quickly from it. You can't be afraid to handle something as common as a squirrel. I'm more apprehensive about random dogs.
