As promised, Bungie was on hand at MLG San Diego to unveil a “chilly” treat for the attendees of the event. Lukems and Shishka of Bungie picked up two of MLG’s biggest stars, Karma and Legend, in a 2v2 exhibition match fit for the highlight reels. Much like the exhibition match at MLG Meadowlands, the match was used to unveil a brand new map that’s very close to all of our hearts.
Now let us get straight to the point: Chill Out is back! Resurrected from the days of Halo: CE, Bungie has answered many of our prayers and recreated Chill Out in all of its glory. The new map, dubbed “Cold Storage,” will presumably be released for Halo 3 sometime soon (although Bungie is still keeping the lid on any concrete info regarding dates). When the announcement was made, the audience at MLG San Diego erupted in applause, and the very first match was then played. Check out our photo gallery from the unveiling, where you can get a glimpse of the very first publically released images of the map anywhere on the planet!

I'm pretty much glad they did this in that I loved chillout alot. But at the same time I feel sort of iffy about them making so many remakes instead of making GOOD new maps. Hopefully this remake will play well and be just as fun.

The Pit seems like a spiritual successor to Chiron. We don't need more "Spartan training facilities". We need more NEW maps. This doesn't have enough pictures for me to get a good reference, but looks okay as is.

The Pit is nothing like Chiron TL34 at all, and thus, is not a spiritual successor.
I don't get what's so special about Chill Out anyway. It's a fun map, yes, but everyone nuts their goddamn pants over it, and god forbid you play something other than Chill Out on XBC. Bungie's paying to much attention to their Serious Business gamers and not enough to anyone else. Note how they changed the "Community" playlist category to "Hardcore," and added Team Swat to it as a permanent addition. Still waiting on those infection playlists.

Judging by how well they remade Zanzibar and Sidewinder (and Lockout, I guess), I'm looking forward to Chill Out. I loved that map.

Chillout was one of my favorite Halo 1 maps, and I remember all those 1 vs 1 games I played on it. I'm really glad that they are remaking it, and I hope it's just as good as the original.

It's a really well designed map... I liked it. It wasn't perfect of course, the inclusion of the in that map was just obnoxious and unnecessary.

I like remakes, as long as they do have new maps, which Halo 3 does.
Its a good shoutout to the real fans out there that have been with the series since Halo 1.
This will be a great map, always fast past. I hate HUUUUUGE maps that take ages to find an enemy.

Why, yes. Yes it is :P. I'm more so annoyed at the fact that they made Guardian which was suppose to be the "spiritual successor" of Lockout, then they go and release blackout in a DLC :|. Same shit, different day.
If I wanted to play sidewinder, I would plop in my Halo 1 disc. Its a new game. As selfish as this is to say: I want to play new maps that were created from the ground up with the halo 3 engine in mind, not some re-hashed crap with halo 3 sprinkles on top :/.
The only map I've ever cared to see remade was Danger Canyon, due to the fact that I can only play it on the PC, but I don't expect Bungie to drop their porters-grudge or what-the-fuck-ever they have, anytime soon.

One of the reasons that I see, personally, is that I don't think Bungie has really caught a feel for the halo 3 engine as yet. I mean, this is just my opinion, but most of their maps don't even really seem to flow as well as they used to in the previous games. Maybe they are still trying to figure out what really works.

See, I'm an avid DDR player. In DDR often times they'll re-release old songs as DLC with pretty much no alterations to it (the steps would be the same... but the background would be different... which doesn't effect it at all.
Point is?
People still buy those old songs for the nostalgia. People will buy these songs because they know they will be good.
Same thing with how Nintendo abuses Mario games... how many times have they re-released the old Mario games in new packages? AND THEY STILL SELL.
People want these old maps, whenever Bungie releases new stuff they're always like "Due to popular demand blah blah blah" why? Because it's easier to say "MAKE CHILLOUT" than "COME UP WITH A NEW IDEA THAT MIGHT NOT TURN OUT AS WELL AS CHILLOUT!"
AKA now they can make a huge splash with the oldschool community (who much of which barely play H3 anymore...) and get some old players back in the game. From a business standpoint it's an extremely good idea to remake oldschool classics.

Penisplosion? Sounds like some horrible medical condition.
Chillout is a great small-ish map, which Halo 3 needs, since it only has Guardian and Blackout for that right now (too bad they are all remakes of or "inspired by" a previous map). I hope that they'll make a nice arena map too, sometime (or at least add some Forge Foundry maps, like the fantastic Wizard/Warlock remake Metalock to matchmaking).

Yay, some clear images of the map. Very nice looking and the map seems more or less unspoiled from what I gain from those pictures thus far. I'm guessing that might be a monitor in the second picture, who knows.

Fuck Warlock and Wizard. I hated those maps with a passion. If anything I want large scale maps back, like Infinity and Death Island. You could actually hide and do stealthy shit in those maps.

I agree, though not everybody reads the Weekly Updates, so you can't really blame them all that much. For the record, the Shotgun isn't at the right spot in the picture, according to the actual in-game map (they said this in the Update).

Those two pictures just made me realize how much technology in gaming has evolved in the past years. I mean, look at the difference between the two, Chillout is all blocky, not rounded out or anything like that and has not much detail, and Cold Storage is quite the opposite, all nice and everything.

BTW, is Chilly supposed to look Covenant? It's a bit like Hang 'Em high where you don't know if it's Forerunner or something else. However, the new map is Forerunner... like most of H3 maps are. Notice how the game lacks Covie maps!

Chillout is distinctly forerunner. Human constructs have a special look in all the halo games. IE. They never had purple walls. Hang 'em High was obviously forerunner for its forerunner textures and the glaring Halo in the sky.
It is also commendable that Cold Storage actually looks like it could be a storage and study facility. Or atleast a section of one. Alot of the other maps look as though they were specifically built for SPARTAN BATTLES but this one actually looks like it has another purpose.

Well, we all know that this isn't one of the three maps in the upcoming map pack, and it's the only new map announced (with detail) so far, unlike the other times, where they either announced them all at the same time, or gave dates to when the others would be announced. So, I have a theory that this map will be released (either for free, or for Microsoft Points) on Bungie Day (July 7th). This is just my opinion, but I think that it makes sense.

Not to mention it's codename, Smuggler was announced quite a while after Purple Reign and Moonbase Alpha, yet it was the first map out of the three to be properly revealed. I wouldn't be surprised if it came out on Bungie Day.

Just watched the new vidoc, and it still looks awesome. One thing that would be cool (but isn't implemented, at least as far as I can tell from the video) is having the Flood Pure Form encased in its containment tube morph between its three different states over the course of the game.

Those darn wave pirates! The rest can be handled easily with missile combos (power/ice) or normal fire (plasma), but the wave pirates were a pain. They were brutal in the first room you encounter them.
Also, Halo needs Sheegoths.

Yes, because the Space Pirates have never done anything that would make Samus' past GRIMDARK and there fore there is no reason for Samus to hunt them down en masse...

I just played it this morning, and I find that it's a great map. It's great, even for 1 vs 1 games. I especially love how you can see infection forms walking around outside of the windows (the room where you see the infestation through the windows). This reminds me of old times in Halo 1, and I'm glad Bungie remade it.

I dont like the map. I think the graphics just feel... way outta place. Its hard to describe, but the textures to me for some reason just don't feel like they fit the rest of the game. Kinda looks like something on the wii... i dunno...

Map is :awesome:. Just played a most excellent game of Fiesta Slayer, and got a big Rocket/Sword frenzy (my BR is crying.) Quite faithful to Chill out, but still fresh enough to feel like a new stage.
As for the "feel" of the map... it's much different; an odd mix of Forerunner, Covenant, and light blue. But it's still pretty good. Could use more normal maps, though.

Played this map with Con, p0lar, Ifafudafi, Muki, and a few others earlier. We played a game of infection, but the gametype needed some work, the way we had forged the map up. I got a killionaire killing Con and Ifafudafi (I think those were the two) because of messed up spawns.

That's 'cause we were playing an Infection variant where all the Zombies are superfast, but have extremely low health and no shields. We spawned in the same fucking place every fucking time, so all the humans just camped and kept killing the zombies before we could even do anything.
Then someone got too close and I sliced 'em, and then the game ended shortly afterwards.
We also played 16-player Flamethrowers-only FFA afterwards. That was fun. :awesome:

Retnafence and I are currently working on a kickass Infection map & gametype variant for Cold Storage called Thawspace & Freezer Burn (respectively). The map has been restructured to adequately create a very tense 'last stand' area, along with plenty of close-quarters encounter setups spread about the map. Currently, the zombies have more health, move slower, jump higher, and are immune to headshots, as to give a 'creeping death' feel. It's gonna be epic!

I dont like the map. I think the graphics just feel... way outta place. Its hard to describe, but the textures to me for some reason just don't feel like they fit the rest of the game. Kinda looks like something on the wii... i dunno...
I think it fits well with the "medical" aesthetic from the Halo 2 Oracle level.

:O Me, Caboose and two other dudes were trying to get out map for like an hour. Managed to get outside a "blue" part sadly not where the flood are :(

I managed to get into the glass area with the flood, but theres a death barrier immediately after the glass. Same with the other glass area that has the extra cyro tank type things inside it.

Wait, what? How can you play a 16 player FFA game using only Flamethrowers, when you can only have one Flamethrower on the map at a time, and you can't start with it (since it's a support weapon)?

That's because it's a modded gametype, and that was the part that was modified.

It's a "just playing around with" mod, as long as you don't put it on your Fileshare, you're safe.

Regarding the 7/7 playlist, Chill Out is way too small to host 7-player FFAs, but whoever decided to put Braaaains Infection in the playlist is :awesome:. That was a pleasant, unexpected surprise. Hopefully the map will be fun once it's implemented into other playlists.

I really like the level, but the color scheme (like a lot of the black/white contrasty forerunner designs) remind more of a level from Mass Effect than Halo.

Not anymore, because those who have them on their Fileshares will get banned, and will probably remove their modded stuff off of them. That doesn't mean that some people won't have kept them, but they'll get banned soon, probably, so your best bet is to get them through custom games.

I'm all for banning the stupid map mods (hurr hurr lets put down 80 random bipeds and like 50 objects that don't work without a script), but some of these gametype mods should make Bungie favorites.

I kinda agree. Kinda. Not all the mods were like...."Lets mess with things that are totally useless like gate doors and random bipeds, or 9012 Elephants," but some were actually useful or fun for gameplay.

I have a few mods that were actually well made for normal games, and not just stupid "luk at meh! I canz modz!! lololol" mods where there's just 10000 random things lying around. I wish they would have made a few exceptions.
