I know that its a bit early...and I have made two other movie threads, but anyone here that has seen my post record knows that I am a DBZ fanatic.
I want to see what everyone else thinks. Perhapse you can enlighten me on things I dont know or bring up good points.
Besides, if map teams can make threads on WIP's that arent released for 2 years (CMT) then I can too :P
Its planned to release April 10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_10), 2009 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009)
____________________
The Movie is following Goku in his quest to find the Dragon Balls of course. It will be, time line speaking, on the last few episodes of Dragon Ball. Director James Wong of Final Destination, and producer the revolutionary film maker Stephen Chow of Shaolin Soccer will be in command of this very top heavy movie. This could be epic or a failure. Son Goku is Justin Chatwin who played Tom Cruise’s son in Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, the star of The Invisible, and Master Roshi is Chow yun-fat of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Full cast as of yet is:
Justin Chatwin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Chatwin) as Goku (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_Goku_%28Dragon_Ball%29)
James Marsters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Marsters) as Piccolo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_supernatural_beings_in_Dragon_Ball#Piccolo _Daimao)
Jamie Chung (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Chung) as Chi-Chi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Earthlings_in_Dragon_Ball#Chichi)
Emmy Rossum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmy_Rossum) as Bulma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulma)
Chow Yun-Fat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chow_Yun-Fat) as Master Roshi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muten_Roshi)
Joon Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Joon_Hyung) as Yamcha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamucha)
Eriko Tamura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eriko_Tamura) as Mai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Earthlings_in_Dragon_Ball#Mai)
Texas Battle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Battle) as Carey Fuller
Luis Arrieta as Weaver (The Krillin Replacement)
Randall Duk Kim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randall_Duk_Kim) as Grandpa Gohan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Earthlings_in_Dragon_Ball#Grandpa_Son_Goha n)
Ernie Hudson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernie_Hudson) as Master Mutaito (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Earthlings_in_Dragon_Ball#Mutaito)
Shavon Kirksey as Emi
They are currently planning two sequels which by my thoughts would lead them right up to the Vegeta Saga.

I must admit that I am worried, not only because its hard to make a rediculously over the top anime like Dragon Ball into live action without seeming silly, but also...they have taken it upon themselves to edit things. According to my mate, who isn't a reliable source, and not meant to be taken seriously, but they have cut the character of Krillin out and invented the character of "Goku's highschool friend" which changes the story quite a bit. Goku never even went to high school. This could fail or be the best movie (to me) ever.

Here, Goku (kid in orange) is almost hit by a car which he then jumps over.

Why the fuck did they cut out cue-ball >:|
i'm a DBZ fiend but somehow i dont think that they'll be able to accurately represent the characters from the show. Voices will be different, Live action, messing with the storyline :/
i hope to god this will be a rebirth of a great show, and not a nail in the coffin.

It wont be our DB, but it will be loosely, but strongly based on it. It may very well be a flop of H2V proportions. But yeh, uber pissed by the cut of Krillin.

How are they planning to cram a ton of useless trashtalk between the fighting sequences into a movie of at max 2 hours?
Heathen
June 15th, 2008, 08:22 AM
Well its gonna be a bit of background development also.
They have new characters for romantic relations.
The Piccolo story development also will take time.
And numerous flashbacks for the Grandpa Gohan scenes.

Cutting out Krillin...?
Also, what the hell...that skinny guy with pathetic hair is playing as goku? Hahahahaha, this is going to be bad. He doesn't even carry the semi-silly free-spirited, careless Goku-look. He just looks sort of like an emotional highschool teenager.
I doubt it'll be a good Dragon Ball movie, but it may still be a movie worth watching. I also don't see them turning this into a live action either without looking very jokey and wierd.
PS. They better dye some people's hair. Bulma better not be brown haired during the movie >: (. And that guy lacks the Roshi look. They should atleast give him a fake moustache and beard...

Couldn't agree more. So far I'm not pleased with the way the movie is looking. Do I think it'll be good? Not really to be quite honest. I've always thought the Dragonball series wasn't a very good fit for live action. Why the cut out Krillin for some teenage drama queen named Weaver I will never know. Krillin was a key Dragonball character after all...

The fight scenes could be possible. The fight scene at the end of the Maxtrix trilogy (Neo vs Smith) is similar to lots of (earlier) DBZ fights.

Goku's missing his tail...
He is at this point in the series.
And their is a bully (with the most rediculois real name, Texas Battle)
So theirs gonna be a badass scene similar to the spiderman one. But badder asser.
I'll admit that its not getting many points gor accuracy, but its still got a chance to be a winner. Me and my friends are all gonna go dressed in costume and my friend Orey is going in a Sailor Moon costume.
Ill post pics.
This movie better be good or else the abbreviation of the name will pretty much spell out the look on my face...

It's looking pretty bad..
This is a quote from Chow-Yun Fat's dialect coach, who I assume has been on many movie sets with him. Prolly got some experience.
Gregory Charles, Chow Yun-Fat’s dialect coach, talks more about the cast and crew of Dragonball here (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&langpair=es%7Cen&u=http://www.gregory.hk/) on his blog.
On the Dragonball set, I was surprised to find that rehearsals and interaction between the director and actors were very similar to that at TVB. I think the significant time or rather lack of it had something to do with it. Dragonball’s schedule was extremely rushed. Rehearsals were quick, and involved more acting and less blocking which did not really happen until the cameras were turned on. Furthermore, there appeared to be little discussion between the director and the actors. Most of the discussion that I heard on set seemed to be ‘I should do this’ and’ I should go there ‘, ie, strong recommendations from the cast rather than sincere suggestions and then discussions with the director thereof.
James was a remarkable director. Quiet, patient and tolerant, he was aware of the casts’ abilities and limitations, and also very aware of what the story itself could offer. If the cast neglected the chance to consult with him or learn from him, then they missed out big time! On more than one occasion, James reminded me of Henry; they share similar admirable qualities. Given the chance, I would definitely make the most of being able to work with such a director.
It is of course true that I only saw some of what happened on-set, and I did not see anything of what happened off-set. Perhaps James discussed the story with the cast behind closed doors, or over the phone. Perhaps the cast asked him for direction when they encountered difficult scenes within the story. I hope so, because nothing could be so wrong as a talented artist who ignores their director, or believes that they no longer need to improve their craft.
Apparently, good director, lazy cast, very rushed schedule.

The point of Dragonball was cornball humour. Then as Toriyama got pulled further and further away from the series (GT was made without even his consent) it began to devolve more and more into "My power is 1 MILLION!!!!" "NO WAI! TRANSFORM!!!!!"
So yea, you're probably remembering "Wow, Power Rangers are cool... let's put shows about fighting on the air!" Dragonball... not actual genuinely funny version.

(6:05:01 PM) paperr10t: UK, February 10, 2009 - Akira Toriyama, the acclaimed manga artist who created the Dragon Ball universe back in 1984, had some interesting thing to say to this Japanese site (which was helpfully translated by anime news network).
(6:05:16 PM) paperr10t: Commenting before the new Japanese trailer for the film, he said: "As the original creator, I had a feeling of "Huh?" upon seeing the screenplay and the character designs, but the director, all the actors, the staff, and the rest are nothing but 'ultra' high-calibre people."
(6:05:17 PM) Travis: uh
(6:05:25 PM) paperr10t: He went on: "Maybe the right way for me and all the fans to appreciate it is as a new Dragon Ball of a different dimension. Perhaps, this might become a great masterpiece of power! Hey, I look forward to it!!"
(6:05:33 PM) paperr10t: read it damn it..
(6:05:41 PM) Travis: yeah
(6:05:46 PM) Travis: I am reading it
(6:05:49 PM) Travis: basically its this
(6:06:09 PM) paperr10t: ...
(6:07:33 PM) Travis:
Akiri345: Wtf is this shit?
Directorboi69: Nah, it's a different universe or some shit
Akiri345: This shit better not suck
Directorboi69: Just say some nice shit so you can get paid and gtfo
Akiri345: k.

But see, the creator didn't even want to make Dragon Ball as we know it.
He wanted to make a show centered around a boy that involved corny humor and the likes.
The Kung Fu soon took over the show and then when they started to go the direction of Dragon Ball Z, he wanted to have no part of it.
In fact, he had no hand in the creation of Dragon Ball GT.

Ehhh... the early Dragonballs were the best though.
And GT sucked as a result. Everything had a "Scooby Doo" Oh that's what happened ending...

But he still stuck around for hundreds of episodes?

The further it went -- the less involved he was.
Just watch every dragonball/z/gt episode in order and see their descent as Toriyama had less and less control (with small pockets of mini-sagas)

What Phopojijo said.
He got less and less involved.
he basically wanted a more kid geared shin chan-esque show.

Kid geared? There was several points of full nudity in the Japanese cuts. (along with hilarious jokes)

Then more shinchan like then I had considered.
