First thoughts:
When one takes a look at Battlefield: Bad Company, it looks very similar to Battlefield 2, at least gameplay wise. I, myself, am not a fan of the Battlefield series; it's a little too taxing on the system for my taste. So, for this reason, I am pleased that Battlefield has made the jump to consoles.
Singleplayer Review [SPOILERS]:
The level starts with a cutscene that introduces the player to their character, Preston Marlowe. The game takes place in Eastern Europe, as with many modern combat shooters that have recently been released, and follows the miscast B-Company on their adventure to become rich. In the demo level, Green Acres, your squad is told to advance into a small Russian town and hold it until the rest of the convoy shows up. After slaughtering several APC's full of troops and destroying a BMD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMD-1), you hook up with the convoy to push farther into the country. As you would expect, the convoy is ambushed and completely destroyed and only your squad remains, and you have to destroy the enemy artillery positions.
Multiplayer Review:
Much like Battlefield 2, there is an armament-unlocking system incorporated in this incarnation of the franchise. However, unlike Battlefield 2, there are only five squad classes, unlike the previous seven classes. The Medic and engineer class have been combined into a new Support class, which carries both a power-drill and a medipac. The new Demolitions class replaces the Anti-tank class, and also carries a shotgun like an Engineer. Spec-Ops and Sniper are reborn as Specialist and Recon, respectively. Assault has remained Assault. For each class there are six weapon unlocks and one 'gadget' unlock. One unlock and the gadget unlock are able to be "purchased" with credits gained by each level-up.
Unlike Singleplayer, bsp destruction plays a major role in multiplayer combat. For example, if there is a sniper hidden in a building, instead of lobbing a grenade into the small hole or sending a CQB soldier into the house, risking your re-enforcement count, you can call in a laser-guided bomb to level the house. Scenarios like this play out throughout every game in the only multiplayer map in the demo, Oasis, and it is vital to learn how to use the environment to your advantage. In the demo, you can also directly pilot the artillery, providing better support to your front-line troops.
Also like the previous Battlefield, there are vehicles parked at each compound for use by that team, the list of vehicles are as follows:
United States Armed Forces:*
Light Vehicles:
HMMWV
Desert Patrol Vehicle
IFV:
M3 Bradley
MBT:
M1A1 Abrams
Attack Helicopter:
AH-64D Apache Longbow
Middle Eastern Coalition:*
IFV:
Stalker 2T
MBT:
Black Eagle
Attack Helicopter:
Ka-52 Hokum B "Alligator"
* This is not the complete vehicle list, just the vehicles observed in Oasis.
Summary and Conclusion:
I will admit, I loved the demo. I do not know why people continue to say "omg ea'd"; this game's multiplayer is outstanding for a console game, and it really captures the Battlefield spirit. While playing this game, I really feel like I'm on the battlefield, attack helicopters screaming over head while the rock wall I was just taking cover behind gets obliterated. The bsp destruction makes you feel like there is no where to hide, and this desperation makes the fighting a lot more intense. I wasn't all impressed by the singleplayer though, however the new trailers and such makes it look quite fun. There is also quite a lot of humor, strange for a game of such startling realism.
