I just finished Higurashi (that anime that I've been talking about in my previous posts). All I have to say is that this is probably one of my new favorite animes. It has a very strong and rather compelling story. Loved it.

Edit: Just checked a little of the dub out... ok... everyone who has the slightest urge to watch the dub... don't... aside from atleast 1 or 2 characters, the voices don't fit the characters at all.

DUB FAIL.

ultama121
September 6th, 2008, 02:14 AM
Do you mean that negatively? If so... er why? What's so bad about character development? It allows for further story expansion, which is usually a good thing. I'm on Ep 17 now so I think I've experienced atleast a few of those episodes before and I can't say that the anime has bored me.

LlamaMaster

Just finished the elfen lied manga. I don't even know if I need to spoiler this.

That was fucking terrible. Time after time the author betrays the reader by bringing the "dead" back to life. No, when somebody "dies", I want them to stay the fuck out of the rest of the story.

Sexual shit, it sucked. Ok, yes, it was consistently funny for a while, but you killed it you perverted asshole. There's only so much fanservice you can stuff it one series without the reader loseing all respect. Sorry, but I'd rather not see nana/nyu/yuka/mayu naked every other chapter.

Jesus Christ, the girls are fucking pussys. Must nana cry every chapter? It's bad enough that they cry constantly without reason, but if they are so damn emo, they shouldn't have unaturally happy highs.

Generic anime garbage. The first half or so of the series was pretty good at avoiding that, but later on it gets completely fucktarded. Hurrr, my horns grew spontaneously!! Hurr, I'm a giant mutant!! Hurr, imma tank running off of organs!!

So basically, first half, awesome; second half, lame.

ultama121
September 6th, 2008, 02:51 AM
IMO Elfen Lied sucks... period. All I see is gore, nudity, awful dialogue, and an ok storyline.

Also... Elfen Lied was made by a woman... yeah... Lynn Okamato.

Jelly
September 6th, 2008, 02:57 AM
I do mean it negatively: an Anime about giant fighting robots really shouldn't have an unwilling unstable male main character. The only real reason it managed to stretch to 26(I think?) episodes is because of Shinji's crying about everything, otherwise it could have been done in half that.

Also the ending is :gonk:
You'll be like "What? Did I miss something?" BUT YOU DIDN'T MISS SOMETHING.

legionaire45
September 6th, 2008, 03:15 AM
I read through Elfin Lied only for the sheer shock factor of it all. That got a bit boring about half way through. Lol, at least now I have some semi-decent CS sprays of people being ripped apart.

HELLS YEAH.

I didn't really predict the main character's sexuality though... I wanted him to end up with one of the girls or something, mb he's bi or something, I mean there's an entire manga based on that alternate universe in ep 26. That is of course another love triangle manga. Of course... I haven't finished the anime though... NOBODY SPOIL ME IF MY PREDICTIONS ARE WRONG. (I've only watched up to 24 and heard about the alternate universe in 26 so yeah)

Finished it. Wasn't a bad ending... thought it was a bit strange, but I thought it was tied in a neat bow.

Beginning of End of Evangelion. From what I saw, looked like Shinji was masturbating to Asuka's unconscious, breast exposed body... :gonk:

Also, I finished it.

Wow, that ending was awful for the characters, and it kind of dissapointed me. I can't believe everyone died... freakin Rei clones giving people their dreams but at the same time 'asploding them. I mean really. OMG MISATO SENSEI *BLAGHL*. To tell you the truth, it sort of made me laugh though because of how over the top it was. :awesome: After all of the surreal "I AM NOW UNITED WITH YOU, WE ARE HUGE NUDE ANGELIC PEOPLE" stuff, I really didn't get what happened. Ok... the third impact happened, and Asuka and Shinji are alive... and Shinji tries to strangle Asuka? wat? No more explanation of what happens afterwards? Huh?
Aside from that: :awesome:

Gundam: Wing, The 08th MS Team, and G were the only series I found to be good. Lot of people hated G but I thought it was a fantastic change while still retaining the mobile suit theme.

Laputa: Castle In The Sky
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Blue Gender
Cowboy Bebop
Death Note
Gundam Wing

I also enjoyed, to some degree, Eureka 7. Though at times Renton's behavior and his relationship with Eureka gets quite annoying. Also the underlying plot doesn't really make any sense at all. No pretty much Gundam Seed destroyed any faith I had in any new Gundam series.
00 is totally different. It begins sort of like Wing, with 'terrorist' Gundam pilots trying to change the world, and then it goes off on its own path and gets quite good. It starts a little slow, doing a lot of world-building, but when things kick into action it gets real good. And you'd be just in time for season 2, which starts on Sunday.
I can't stand Seed/Destiny either (you gotta admit though, Seed 49 was a hell of an episode), but I was pleasantly surprised by 00. It's directed by the same guy who did Full Metal Panic.

And in retrospect Wing really wasn't very good...

also: Wraith, you want realistic storylines? watch 00! :D It's set in Anno Domini, the source of most conflict is due to lack of resources and orbital elevators (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/10/02/space.elevator/?iref=mpstoryview)/ring of solar panels are built around Earth to harvest energy, lots of political stuff going on, and touches on racial conflicts, child soldiers, moral ambiguity, and *possibly* gender identity of artificial lifeforms?

Have any of you played any visual novels? They're rather cool. It's almost like a manga but in color and with voice acting. Some are pretty amazing, like Tsukuhime and Fate Stay Night. Now here's a bit of controversy... a lot of the really amazing ones are actually eroges (Including the ones I just mentioned). Now don't be discouraged by that, the eroticness of them is simply a separate entity from the compelling stuff (Story, characters etc). Although there aren't very many visual novels officially released in English, the die hard fans have translated the awesome ones. Here's a list of some of the fantranslated visual novels (Downloads [For the free ones] and Buy links [For the ones that cost money] are available on this page)

http://shii.org/translate/

One visual novel has been in the process of translation lately (And it's 95% finished at that). Its entitled: Chaos;Head (Don't worry this one isn't an eroge :p).
Here's a sypnopsis for it.

Chaos;Head is a Japanese visual novel developed by 5pb. and Nitroplus with gore, psychology, and science fiction elements. The game is described by the development team as a "Delusional Science NVL" . The game's premise revolves around a high school student named Takumi Nishijō who unknowingly walks into the scene of a gruesome murder on his way home. More mysterious events starts happening afterwards as more gruesome murders occurs in the area. Takumi struggles to cope with reality and the delusions he experiences as he tries to avoid being getting caught by the perpetrator behind the chain of murders. So far, 2 episodes of the anime have been released fansubbed and it seems pretty cool so far. (If you don't like the anime, don't judge it by it, because some of the most amazing visual novels have had shitty animes). A beta patch for the visual novel has also been released. http://www.mediafire.com/?gomjyedywyg (Everything is translated besides the pictures, which will remain unedited until the next and most likely final patch is released).

Here's the Opening for the visual novel (the song is pretty awesome, it's entitled: "Find the Blue"):

November 8th, 2008, 08:39 PM
So I watched King of Braves : GaoGaiGar and GaoGaiGar Final (the sequel)...

For the first ~25 episodes it's a generic kid's show about giant robots with generic villains. There's very little development on the part of the antagonists with a monster-of-the-week approach to plot development. It uses an irritatingly large amount of stock footage (comprising anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 of a 24-minute episode) and a very facepalm-inducing transforming vehicles aspect - both of these don't totally go away until far later in the show, which really detract from its quality. The opening theme will make you wince, as will a very large number of moments throughout the series...

But then around episode 29 it gets insanely, fuck-yeah-ing awesome.

It's like halfway through the show the producers realized that they would appeal to a far bigger audience if they turned down the suckiness. The stock footage is trimmed, the antagonists get a better motive than "lets rule world lol", and there will be scenes where you go "OMG NOOOOO :(" or "FUCK YESSSSSSSSSS :awesome:." Granted, the childish elements take a while to fade way, and even after the first FUCK YES point there will be facepalm moments that send the show plunging back to the failure that it started out as, but by the end they've been completely overshadowed by the aura of BURNING PASSION AND COURAGE that the characters emit.

While you're waiting for the suck to go away, the show (inadvertantly at times) lets you have some good laughs involving :

-Rocket-powered rollerskates
-A unicorn mech equipped with energy weapons made from freezers and microwaves piloted by a homeless guy
-A fire truck that shoots fire
-Penchinon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RgIU5tgCkA)
-The writers' terrible understanding of the English Language; results include a supposedly American character exclaiming "great!" when she is informed of a railway gun being aimed at a city
-A gay robot that fights using a gold-plated key-tar that shoots lasers
-General suckiness
-WTF moments that, I guarantee, overshadow anything else you have ever seen.

I went into this show with my dislike of most mecha anime (I have yet to enjoy a single Gundam series - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann has up until now been the only mecha anime I liked) and really had my doubts up until said turning point...

But by the end of the main series I loved it, and with a few minor hiccups the sequel was even more amazing. If you're going to watch it, I'd reccomend seeing the first few episodes just to become acquainted with the main characters and the premise, but then just skip around until 29. (Not skip over, because some episodes *do* have cool stuff regardless of the early-on suck factor. The first 5-10 minutes can usually be an indicator of if something important will happen or not.) It's ~50 episodes in total, no reason to waste time watching the entirety of an episode with nothing interesting happening.

In conclusion, it'll probably be worth the time investment, unless you suck and can't appreciate BURNING PASSION AND COURAGE.

All episodes are on YouTube. Except the very last one. YT is a faggot and thought it would be funny to make it cut off in the middle, which caused me to rage like I've never raged before.

Downloaded and watched Spice and Wolf...

Over all I think it was pretty good (looking forward to season 2), has that whole cheesy love type thing going on. Of course, I liked Ah! My Goddess and Chobits... so I dunno. Anyway, I believe it's a total furry show, so if you're a furry it's for you. I'm not a furry, but something about the fox ears was kind of... oh gawd :smithicide:

Anyway, yeah, download and watch if you haven't.

And yes, I got the idea to watch it from the updated youtube post with the opening as the test video...

I watched alot of anime in korea, forgot what it's called but it's about this dude with a sword and these 2 girls fight over him.

something to do with tenchi...

I prefer Black Lagoon or Love Hina, that's the only ones i watch now..... rarely anything else,
but i do play alot of "anime" themed games: s4 league, tales runner, etc.

Oh, one more thing:
does this happen in your school:
some obsessed over vampires/deathnote/asia chick/guy
has a "deathnote" notebook, and goes around and writes people's names in it and how they die? Cause in my highschool, a crazy chick has my name in it after i "borrowed" it.

Made me Lol, cause i was gonna get killed by a vampire at a clock tower...

and then one day i stumbled upon hentai, and it's pretty much crazy shit you'll never see in real life.

Teenagers fighting a computer virus that has manifested itself as a giant cricket in a desert and possessed a computer nerd which was created as a result of a doodle was just too much for me to swallow. The whole "L O L we're using our secret superpowaz to play baseball" was also a major turnoff for me. When that stuff got involved my willingness to suspend disbelief for what started out as a comedy was stretched too far. I understand that there was supposed to be an element of irony in that, but when said irony makes the show unenjoyable it's not worth it imo.

Why does everyone like Death Note? I mean honestly. I found it to be annoying. Like, I understood that Light had gone mad with power within the first few episodes. Then it just got horribly dragged out. Then L dies... and like, I pretty much lost all interest in it. I watched all of it... and I can honestly say it wasn't that great of an Anime.

Why must Hollywood continue to rape good things?

FROM MOVIES BLOG (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/01/16/keanu-reeves-to-star-in-live-action-cowboy-bebop-adaptation/): Last month, MTV caught up with Keanu Reeves about his dream project — a live-action remake of the anime classic, “Cowboy Bebop.” (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/12/17/keanu-reeves-eager-to-do-something-good-with-cowboy-bebop-movie/) Reeves confirmed that he and Fox were “trying to do that” and that a writer was attached. Now, The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i4b7a99706a1f6a077ed21921bf2d43fd?imw=Y) is confirming that Reeves is set to play Spike Spiegel, and that Peter Craig is writing the script. No director has been named.:mech:

Anime adaptations of video games?! That are good?!

Naw.

No, I don't count visual novels as video games. >.>

Too sloppily directed to succeed at action and too clunkily scripted to make for compelling drama, Devil May Cry does have the makings of a good, down and dirty exploitation series. The needlessly gory violence, shallow characters and even the hideously overbearing guitar-rock score would all be advantages in an unrepentant sleazefest. Unfortunately Devil May Cry just isn't nasty enough to work as exploitation, and with its dull cast, piles of dumb clichés and uninvolving action, it ends up being one thing that even exploitation series are never allowed to be: boring. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/devil-may-cry/dvd-3)

You poor soul. D:

I hate to quote again, but hey, its well said.

And that part of the scene is what makes Gantz itself unredeemable. Honestly ... that they had the gall to depict a girl who had just committed suicide and then seconds after a violent rape attempt, being giggly and laughing over a dog going down on her? I just ... can't compute this. (http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=841)

Not sure if this has been brought up, but i think
"spirited away" is one of the best ones,

-It's not superbly perverted like the modern ones.
-It has nice animations, not like naruto where it repeats certain animations.
-It has a nice storyline, and no random shit, like that bobobobobobobo one...
-You can understand it by watching it once.

Three posts in the same thread in the same day woo. *cracks knuckles*

In my opinion, Spirited Away, and most of Miyazaki's works for that matter are absurdly overrated. Sure they're imaginative and well written, but they just haven't left me feeling like I've experienced something that will stick with me, like most other good anime I've watched have.

-It's not superbly perverted like the modern ones.
Heh. Not all modern anime are like that. Since the Japanese are indeed the Japanese, they practically feel obligated to put fanservice in of some kind, which is why you see so many innuendos in anime. It really depends on the anime you're watching though. All of the good anime don't suffer from this, but there might be a tiny bit of fanservice.

-It has nice animations, not like naruto where it repeats certain animations.
Lol, most good anime have good animation. Naruto however is not a good anime, nor are its production values even remotely high.

-It has a nice storyline, and no random shit, like that bobobobobobobo one...
There are a lot of shit anime out there with shit storylines. Sounds like you've been subjected to a lot of shit ones. Its just a matter of watching the good stuff.

I like it when people break the norm for things that are otherwise shitty (in this case, actually putting time into selecting an appropriate song and video editing instead of placing random scenes together with some Linkin Park song.) I... really didn't see it that way. The animation wasn't the best, but it wasn't what I'd call "horrific" either and a few scenes were exceptionally well-done even by today's standards. Yeah, the elevator and holding Kaowru were a bit much to swallow, I'll give you that. The angel designs were also pretty uninspired compared to say, the enemy designs from GaoGaiGar (which at least proved pretty unique even when they were kiddie show monsters of the week), but then you never saw much of them anyway and when you did they weren't usually as bad.

...Unless you're talking about the last 2 episodes when they were running out of money, which I don't think should leave such a large impression on someone's opinion of the series.

Nor did I find the "teen angst" to get in the way - it was just how Shinji (and later on Asuka) developed as characters and I was willing to deal with it. I don't think you don't have to like a character or their attitude towards life to enjoy a series; I actually enjoyed hating the protagonist for a change. I guess I just don't see it as a fault.

okay, so I have been playing the shit out of this game called Princess Waltz.

Yeh, its an H-Game or whatever name you choose but the sex scenes are rare and I gotta say, the story is damn interesting, and in a few occasions I was way too into it.

So...are there any plans to make this into an anime or anything?

Because its fucking good.

Since I feel like ranting I will explain the premise a bit.

Prince needs a woman. Princesses "waltz" for the kings hand. Waltzing is badass sword fighting called "dancing." They wear "dresses" which are armor that is powered by the tiara they wear. The goal of the fights is to either destroy the tiara, knock it off, or kill them.

Bleach-esque sword battles and some damn good plot twists. At one point you get to thinking the main character is EXTREMELY dense but its still good.
