It's so slavish an adaptation as to feel pointless and at times dull. The cast's previous emotional complexity feels dumbed down and obvious.

The TV show is a poor adaptation of the visual novel though, so by all means, play the visual novel first. :[ Well... depending on your definition of "poor adaptation". The anime manages to get in most of the uhhh "critical points" but skimps on major character development as well as explanations.

I do believe a judge ruled drawn pornography depicting minors was within freedom of expression, and declared it legal. Also; "tasteful" and "artsy" nudity is always legal, no matter the age.

The law is very very vague. In some situations they allow it and others they don't.

In Elfen Lied's case, most likely since its brief and minimally explicit, (trust me, it is) its allowed.

...buuuuut, in cases that involve explicit sex, regardless of use, is not allowed. I'll use an example. There was an Eroge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eroge) released by JAST USA (http://www.jastusa.com/) recently called Kazoku Keikaku (http://vndb.org/v155). One of the heroines in this eroge was underage at one point, but turns 18 later. Before turning 18, there where a few images of this character in the game that contained nudity. Although there wasn't even actual sex taking place in these images, they contained nudity, and therefore had to be censored when localized. I find this really strange though, since Elfen Lied contained both underage nudity and sex and was not censored. That and the fact that at the time the underage images take place in Kazoku, nothing sexual is happening. The main character just accidentally gets a glimpse at the character nude. It was either the fact that the character's genitals were visible in those images or the fact that sex with that same character takes place later in that game that made those images required to be censored. ... God I had to awkwardly word that sentence.

There are also other ways the laws are circumvented though...

For example, JAST USA is going to be bringing over a lot of Nitro+ (http://vndb.org/p42) games. A lot of Nitro+'s games contain lolis... buuuuut since the lolis in their games are either 1: not underage, or 2: not human, JAST is going to have no problem bringing their games to the states and wherever else.

Oh, I also forgot to mention the fact that Kazoku is sure as hell NOT a porn game. Its actually one of the most beloved eroge ever because of its emotional story.

As you can tell, the loli law doesn't make any sense, is stupid, vague, and pointless...

well shit, I just finished up watching haruhi all in one sitting. the plot was somewhat interesting but definitely nothing special. the art direction is good, but some animations were really poor (the giant cricket...) and the earlier episodes were rather poor. I suppose if I watched them all again in order it would make more sense to me, and I feel that I should of watched them chronologically anyway. another thing, it seemed like the creators of the show had a lot to work with, seeing as one of the character's (yuki) had the ability to manipulate literally anything. that aspect of power wasn't utilized to it's full potential, and used for more childish and pointless uses. the idea of closed space and the "monsters" in them were laughably horrid, a much better concept could of been depicted. imo the show would of fared better had it about 15-20 more episodes under it's belt and a better focus on a relationship between haruhi and kyon. show had a lot of wasted potential and was underdeveloped. nothing special besides art and some comedic value.

I've tried re-watching it and my opinion has not changed. They don't put any of the things they make us suddenly suspend our disbelief for to any good use. I'm fine with some dicking around, but don't make me swallow everyone being some magical superdude if all you do with it is "oh shit it's a murder mystery but shit it could be because she wanted it oh god oh man oh god oh man!" Of course, with a show whose second season contains the same episode reanimated 8 times over that's maybe to be expected... it makes the show no more decent though.

Maybe people who don't like Haruhi are just soulless monsters with no appreciation for what makes the show really outstanding.

- Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, ep. 1

We have to choose between Lucky Star and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei for continued viewing.

I mean, all I remember it having was the 'protect the earth organization', the 'mysterious beings attacking earth', the 'teenage mecha pilot' but the biggest similarities ended there. Feel free to correct me if I'm forgetting some things, haven't watched either in awhile. :v:

-friend turns out to be an enemy, but does not truly wish to harm the main character (kaworu = angel, hiroko = mulian)
-love quadrangle (shinji/asuka/rei/misato, ayato/haruka/megumi/hiroko)
