Sasameki Koto: The main character (Murasame Sumika) is in love with her best friend (Kazama Ushio), and while the latter is also into girls, she's really fucking shallow and only seems to go after straight chicks, leading to crushing denials. Murasama isn't her type and she's too much of a pussy to confess to Kazama anyway.

That narrows it down to about 4 series'.

I am looking for something like Ghost in the Shell. I want something semi realistic ish, while still retaining a little comedy. I really liked FMA, GITS, Witch Hunter Robin ( I think I remember me liking it) Paranoia Agent, and FLCL. And also liked Elfen Lied.

Alright I have a bit of a mindfuck here, and the weirdest thing is that it's real. Here's a copy of the French translation of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni-- er "Le Sanglot Des Cigales".

It's pretty unsubtle... you should spot it granted you know a thing or two about foreign rating systems. (Uh oh I sorta just gave it away didn't I? :3)

It's the rating, which is probably pretty obvious by now. By the PEGI, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, the original visual novel from which the anime was based upon is rated the equivalent of an E rating (7 and older). Before you ask, nope, nothing was censored at all.

Apparently, the PEGI refused to rate the game based on text alone, and in desperation, the company who localized it had the PEGI rate it based on the perfectly non-violent and light hearted mini-games that occur off and on.

Higurashi in all of its gorey, violent, and somewhat innuendo filled glory... with an E rating. Although this certainly says something about the PEGI, I mainly just posted this because I found it funny... so uh... lol.

Only the "Kyon shoots Yuki" thing is accurate, and that's still speculation by what Kyon says (and we all know Kyon is terrible narrator)
- Yuki resets the universe such that Haruhi is not a god (however, she can't affect anything before 3 years ago, so the stuff with the time traveling still happaned)
- Kyon doesn't get reset
- Kyon gets really fucking confused, but eventually figures it all out from a note left in a book telling him how to fix things
- Kyon has to gather up the crew for this to go down, so he does, all but Mikuru come willingly
- Kyon has to (but fails to) go shoot Yuki with a needlegun to keep things from resetting
- Kyon gets stabbed (ow? fucking hell)
- It's only implied (greatly) that it's Kyon who does the shoosting, and since we don't actually get to see it happen, we can't assume jack shit about it, so :shrug:
- And they all live happily ever after, except Kyon has to go back in time at some point in the future and shoot Yuki with a needle gun, at least we think it's him

So I'm in the middle of Armored Trooper VOTOMS, and it is good.

Like, good good. Not a lot of hotblooded mechafucks (which I do wholeheartedly enjoy) or moeblobs (there's like 3 women with more than one line and nobody who looks like they're under 20) or teenage dreamboats. I have a feeling it's a niche thing, but I, for one, enjoy it a lot.

Having a main character that isn't a youthful go-getter, a plot that doesn't revolve around winning some epic megawar (instead, the far less glorious aftermath where all sorts of rickety shit that was supporting said war comes crashing down), and mechs that don't get technobabbled up to mechanical gods (yes Code Geass I am looking right at you) is refreshing for a mecha show to say the least. The mechs (http://www.mahq.net/Mecha/votoms/lastredshoulder/atm-09-sttc.jpg) are utilitarian and ugly and I have to say it's easy to get to like them. Seeing the ATs rollerskating around while shooting fucktons of not-lasers is pretty satisfying at times.

The characters are enjoyable enough, as is the plot (which rarely dives into the unnecessary). I actually find myself enjoying the story as a whole more than the action, which is more than I expected from the series.

To conclude, shit's not bad.

A parody of Evangelion & co which explores all the ways that entrusting a fight against alien invaders to a giant robot is, in actuality, a horrible idea. (It's more than just a parody of Eva-type shows but that's really the strongest thing that's been showing through so far. The enemy designs and "actual" premise scream Evangelion.) The mech in question is a financial and legal nightmare for the defense corporation that owns it (what with collateral damage and all) and is, in general, the most inefficient weapon they could have possibly spent money on. I would almost compare the show's sense of humor to Gurren Lagann's (which it pre-dates by 7 years), but where GL breaks the laws of physics for jokes Dai Guard strictly obeys them.

Death and Rebirth is a clip show, don't bother with it unless you want to see all Eva-related material. Rebuild is fanservice disguised as a "retelling". It's not finished anyhow (one movie is out in the U.S., the other isn't even on DVD in Japan yet IIRC, and there's still something like 2-3 to go).

I saw both Shin Getter Armageddon and New Getter Robo.

Definitely cool from the perspective of things the TTGL took stuff from. Some is thematic - New Getter's storyline ended up as a pretty direct predecessor of the whole Spiral Nemesis thing, and did it far better IMO - GL never showed us what Spiral Power would do outside of that 30-second monologue by Anti-Spiral; here it's made a lot more clear and frightening. Other stuff was a (http://tehlag.modacity.net/two/animes/mechs/vlcsnap-2010-02-05-14h49m23s34.png) bit (http://tehlag.modacity.net/two/animes/mechs/vlcsnap-2010-02-05-14h48m10s71.png) disillusioning (http://tehlag.modacity.net/two/animes/mechs/vlcsnap-2010-02-05-14h41m55s158.png) - parts of Armageddon were virtual dead-ringers for Gurren Lagann, to the extent where I felt that GL came closer than an homage should. Getter Rays and the G-Stone in GaoGaiGar are direct predecessors of the Spiral Power, which takes Getter's POWER OF EVOLUTION and WILL CONSUME THE UNIVERSE and GGG's POWERED BY COURAGE. There's the odd bunch of human resistance dudes piloting bizarre mechs in a post-apocalyptic world with desolate surroundings, while the main characters have the magic uber-mech with ridiculous power and a drill (http://tehlag.modacity.net/two/animes/mechs/1262126626488.jpg). (To be fair, that's just one of the 3 forms Getter has). People who liked Kamina will probably appreciate Ryoma, who is fairly awesome in Armageddon and absolutely ridiculous (http://tehlag.modacity.net/two/animes/mechs/1222545610985%201.png) in New Getter.

And, at least to me, Getter just looks damn cool - especially in Armageddon. It always either has a cape (http://tehlag.modacity.net/two/animes/mechs/1263606433526.jpg) or bat wings (http://tehlag.modacity.net/two/animes/mechs/10fuhrp.jpg) or some other shit stuck on that screams super-robot-awesome. (If that's not your idea of awesome this is probably not something you would enjoy.)

I want to say that I enjoyed both shows, but then they also had a lot of failures. New Getter had a 3-episode detour into the wonderful land of time-travel and alternate universes which really accomplished very little story-wise and only made for giant what-the-fuck-stupid moments; for a 13-episode show that's a pretty big loss (even if it's followed up by a much more impressive and story-driving detour that pretty much made the show for me). It relies pretty heavily on gratuitous violence - the real kind, not with mechs - to keep things interesting. And it often had plot points or sequences (zombies abound) that made go "wtf" or "ugh"; its 70s-kiddie-show origins are really evident and can turn you off really easily. A lot of enemy designs garnered the same reaction, especially at the end (giant bearded scroll-writing man and white-haired anthro dinosaur was where I drew the line). Its conclusion was pretty damn exciting (and was kinda what I expected at the end of Gurren Lagann, so I got a little gratification out of it that maybe others wouldn't) but ultimately I can't recommend it to anyone who doesn't already have an urge to see it.

Armageddon had a far more solid storyline in comparison - though a lot of reviews I saw were critical of it and don't go in expecting anything above the TTGL level of classic "defeat teh evils" lest you be disappointed - but it was fun enough to follow and led to a lot of sequences that were just cool. It seemed like it would go the New Getter way of wtf-ugh at around episode 2, but I was pleasantly surprised that it managed to keep itself more or less as respectable as a show with a man wearing a chain for a belt can keep itself. There was one episode spent on an omg emotional dilemma that every zombie-esque movie ever has had (also a problem in New Getter), but that was the low point of the show and in Armageddon it really didn't detract much from the experience (take that how you will). I rarely cringed while watching it, which is more than I can say for New Getter. However, it was also a lot less exciting than New Getter. The conclusion felt like a huge anti-climax of action... they had the opportunity for some ridiculous ass-kicking but pretty much threw it away. Armageddon would be easier for your average dude to swallow than New Getter but it's still not for anyone who's not into hardcore super-robot stuff and can't tolerate cliché.

I went in looking to see stuff that influenced Gurren Lagann. I got what I expected and not much more. GaoGaiGar was more satisfying due to its amazing ending and sequel despite its 35-some episodes of pointless grind. And then in general, shows like this are not for most people.
