Just out of curiousity I wonder how many people prefer matchmaking over a custom games browser. I'd like to hear opinions as well.

The answer was obvious to me. Matchmaking for ranked, browser for unranked. Matchmaking makes it easy to match yourself with people with similar skills and makes it more competitive (ideal for ranked), and the browser allows you to easily find games that are exactly how you want them to be, and are less competitive (ideal for unranked).

I too think that matchmaking is good for ranked, because of people with similar skill level, and a browser is good to find that specific game you were looking for.

Matchmaking IMO should stay the same, but Custom Games should have a browser.

It's amazing that nobody's voted for matchmaking yet.
Good lord why didn't they include a browser? Seems people would prefer it

They initially planned to have one. Not sure about the circumstances behind why it was dropped, but it really is a shame.

Bungie did have a browser implimented, but removed it because it jus tisn't practicle for a game as large scale as halo 3. You can find the interview on google probabl;y,w here they talk a good deal about it.

Well, I think that it should have been how they planned it, Matchmaking ranked and social, and a custom game browser. But, what we have is good enough, and not having a custom game browser won't stop me from enjoying the game.

Matchmaking, because i'm not too keen to trawl through a huge server list with a controller. However they did it I'd see it as a nuisance, unless of course I could sort the servers by a numerical ping instead of 4 red/yellow/green bars (boo American hosts). It'd be nice to be able to join a social game a friend is playing like in CoD4 though, but I guess that might ruin the flow of the game.

Hah, I'd imagine it'd cut down the size of the list if they had some sort of sort by options feature, like... search for games with:
Starting weapon: BR
< 50% gravity
> 150% speed
Shield type: No shields
as well as things like
Sort by:
Connection,
Gametype,
Map,
Custom map/gametype
etc
And of course a quick join feature.
Just a thought. I'd really like a huge, 16 player match of low gravity, high speed, one shot snipers in an empty-ass Foundry variant.

Obviously, matchmaking for ranked, browser for unranked.
The whole multiplayer experience revolves around the idea of a MATCH. Which is stupid for people that just want to drop in and drop out at their leisure. Even in Social playlists, everything seems high-tensity: you have only 5 to 10 minutes depending on the playlist to play this game before it's over. And because of how this "every game is a match" mentality is established, it doesn't feel right to just jump into someone's party while they're playing customs. And if you do, you usually get booted anyway.
Also, I cannot COUNT how many times I've been in novelty or 2EXP playlists, and I'm forced to sit the whole fucking game through with retarded teammates, overskilled enemies, or no team at all because they quit like a bunch of douchebags. Or something comes up and I have to leave early, and regardless of what I say to my team, I come back and see a bunch of "quit early" added to my reputation because of people who don't know better.
While I always say that people who count EXP as if it were money are stupid for doing so, it's just the thought that I'm being penalized for leaving a crappy game to find a better one irritates the shit out of me.
Again, I'm left thinking that Bungie just doesn't care about the casual gamers anymore. They're too goddamn focused on competitive gaming (I don't blame them, though. If you think about it, it seems to be making them lots of money).

I wish there was a custom browser, sometimes I just want to play on a certain level. I dont want to have to find so many people to playwith, I wish I could just select a pre existing server.
Pbears right, he does get stuck with the shitty teammates, you remember isolation small team slayer? Your teammate got like 3 kills :P

I like matchmaking for how it can put you together with people of the same skill level, but it's far too slow for me. I don't think it's needed as much on PC, though.
