Grip needs more work and the back part has smoothing errors. And it needs a trigger...

The back of it looks really bad. Looks like you didn't take your time on it. Redo that back part and take your time. The pollygon distribution is way off. Lots of pollies in the front and half as many in the back.

the AR is a bullpup, you need to make the back capable of holding a magazine convincingly

Hey, one Q. Why do you guys like Halo 3 so much? If this will be well done, it's cool but I would like to see some custom stuff to be honest :o

Once I have the Halo 3 Weapons modelled I will make custom content.

Looks good, the grip needs to be thickened, more girth on that grip for the chief ;]

The grip is more of a beveled square then a cylinder from what I remember.

foregrip is bad, trigger grip is bad, missing trigger group or any area convincing that there is one, transition from the trigger grip to the rest of the gun is TERRIBLE, pointless detail modeled into the trigger grip, and display is boring.

H3 models are common as dog shit, do something else.

E: disaster, why would you want to have equal poly distribution on an area out of view 99% of the time? His poly distribution at the back is fine, and the magazine well is clearly not finished. Stop posting modeling advice when you don't get it yourself.

Looks quite good, though there are a few parts that could be worked on. The bottom of the grip is too square-ish, and doesn't fit with the rest of the rifle. Besides that, and the lack of a clip (for now), it's a great model. Keep it up!

I just put it in-game quickly to see what is looks like, and it looks pretty good.

Also I had no lag at all and my computer is crap. Sorry for the images being .png but I havnt got the time to convert them.

Also I used default Halo 1 animations just for testing.

I have also changed the grip. So ignore the grip in those pictures. And I need to change the ammo meter a bit.

And the FP is setup crap and wrong because I need to use Halo 1 animations.

Would you want me to texture it as well? Or would you get Dane to do that?

So basicly you want:

Less detail
Trigger Grip Remade
Foregrip sorting out (What exactly do you want me to do with that?)
Display needs to be made better

What else? Because I don't understand some of what Snaf said.

basically the grip should just be a really blocky kinda thing seeing as how its always going to be concealed. Just model a clip, and call it done. But, you do have to fix the grip in the first place.

hoooooly shit you got some shit going on there.

http://xs229.xs.to/xs229/08284/fixshit297.jpg

if i were making a game, and you came to me with that, i'd ALMOST instantly fire your ass.

you've got WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to much chamfers going on EVERYWHERE.

you can get the exact same level of detail with at least half the # of polygons without a doubt. get rid of the silly bevels on the side of the gun in the front as well. they're totally useless and only give you AA artifacts. and fix the unsmoothed stuff, most notably the grip. (and get rid of the billion chamfers on it too, at least on the front, because you dont see those anyway)

and honestly, you dont need to put fucking FIVE edges in a corner to make it smooth looking, that's just rediculous.

td;dr looks good, but in it's current state, it's unacceptable.

Hunter
July 10th, 2008, 07:07 AM

Yea, i guess i forgot to mention the crazy chamfers. The very front won't need any for obvious reasons (its the farthest away), can we get a closeup of the foregrip area tweek circled?

Also, pull the foregrip foreward a bit for some room for the trigger, also get rid of the trigger, because following the halo canon its pressure activated.

Accept the criticism, you will only prove. Yes you could make it that high poly if you was modelling it for a recent game like Crysis, but you are modelling it for an 8 year old game. Just fix up what the users above said and it will work much better. If a vertex is like a millimeter away then its useless being there because it has to make more triangles just for that little thing.

I'll tell you what's wrong with it.

First of all, Hunter put a lot time into this model. Sure, he's not perfect. Not everyone on this site is capable of high-def perfection worthy of being in a huge franchise video game, but they try their best half the time only to have the critics here shit on their models and point out everything that's wrong and not acknowledge at all the potential the creator has.

And of course, when someone busts their ass to make something only to get nothing but bad feedback for it, they're going to naturally be a bit upset. When that happens, telling somebody to stop being a fucking baby isn't going to help them improve. In fact, it's probably going to make them say "fuck this shit" and not even bother because apparently their stuff in everyone else's eyes is horse shit, so they don't even see a point in trying.

Sweet captain Christ people, learn to be nice instead of finding reasons to shit on people, this shit's not that serious, nobody gets paid for their mods and if they ever did Bungie would step in and start bitch-slapping some hoes

Roostervier
July 11th, 2008, 08:44 PM
Muki, my point was that people were already giving him the best response possible by taking time out of their day and using paint on renders to point out his mistake. They didn't just flat out say, "Sux, redo it all." I just see so much real crit now not taken seriously and for the model maker to be a whiny bitch and tell them to stop and give them real help. When, in fact, that is real help. It's the best help possible.

I saw like 4 people take renders and point out the mistakes in paint, and tell him how to make the model use less tris. If it were me, that's the best response I could expect to get. He was only called a baby after he acted like one.

e: Also, if the people giving crit thought that the person had no potential, they wouldn't waste their time telling him how to fix it, plain and simple.

You've learned quite a bit since then, but once again; Just because everyone is giving you criticism doesn't mean you should plug up your ears and run. People are going to treat you rough until you can show us that you are capable of accepting criticism, especially Tweek. People out in the real world will expect this as well. Every time someone shoots down one of your models you throw a hissy fit and all it does is hurt your public image on this forum. All that we see is you being weak and annoying. Accept the fact that you aren't the best 3d artist in the world. I can't model an M1911 from memory, I can't make a 20,000 polygon perfectly detailed AWP model in a few hours and I'm sure that a fair number of other people out there can - I've seen them do it. Keep on practicing, listen to what people say and get better. And while you are doing that, don't let your skill level get to your head. From what I am seeing you are acting like you are superior to everyone's criticisms - no one is. Be happy that people are even spending their time to crit your model. The only thing that people here hate more then a pussy is a prick, if you get what I mean xD.

I know that noone outright said it but some people on this forum seem to feel that way. Either that or they use rudeness to keep people they consider there lessers in check, or establish dominance. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt though. There are plenty of members here who are capable of giving great criticism, you (snaf) being one of them, but others simply don't know how to convey a serious attitude without being cruel. Also, it never hurts to top off a large critical post by pointing out the positives of someone's work. I think thats something people need to consider, rather than only focus on the negatives. It really does convey a much more friendly, respectable image.

Corndogman

It doesn't matter how good your criticism is if you say it like an ass. People don't want to listen to someone who's rude to them. If someone is a complete asshole to you you will probably ignore them. If you speak kindly to them they will listen to you and your message will get across.

Or 3 - Here (http://gamerscreek.com/users/WMHunterTLS/pics/New2.jpeg) - 5907 Triangles
--------------------------
Differences:
1. More detail on the grip and front part of weapon. Un needed because can be added to texture.

--------------------------
2. Un needed detail taken of from front of weapon, display adjusted

--------------------------
3.Smoothing groups changed about on the top part of the weapon, looks more like Halo 3.But not much of a difference.

(Can't see much difference... but small changes sometimes make things better even if you don't notice them.)

------------------------------------
Smoothing near the front still needs fixing, and smoothing around the LCD Display still needs fixing.

I like the extra detail added to the first one, but the third one looks better overall.
As a perspective from the common userbase, rather than the modelwhores who will notice and take apart the most minor details, I say this is most excellent, as I myself can't find much to criticize.

Quite frankly, I also think Tweek's going a little over the top here, but don't feed the troll. Ignoring is better.

In that little indent I pointed out earlier, the one I said needed to be deeper, the hemi-sphere you've got in there is wrong. It looks more like a screw than anything (in the real model), so it should just be a cylinder.

I see more errors this time, since I compared it to your reference on the website.

Fix all that and it should look good.

I'm not going to get it perfect. I just want it to look good. And I want to keep some of the small detail as those small details don't take up many triangles. I will move bolt part down when everything else is ok because that shouldn't be to hard. Rendering...

Edit:

I've got to go now, I will do more tomorrow. Oh, and ignore that error on the LCD Display. I just noticed that, didn't have time to fix and re-render.

Please take a GOOD look at what I posted.

It could really give a lot of advice on how to improve it, also theres a lot of detail you modeled out which could be really a lot easier and poly saving if you just textured it on, but hey its your choice to make UVing harder :3

honestly, what the hell is wrong with all of you, especially the people agreeing with me.

that paintover i did makes no fucking sense whatsoever, i even drew a fucking penis on it, and ADDED LENSFLARES and a load of random filters.

it wasnt even serious.

i still stand by my original arguement, you can make the exact same thing with half the polycount. also, in those 3 images posted, i can see no real difference at all.

do the same you have been doing, but now go to 3000 polies.

I knew that your image wasn't serious at all, I thought i had posted something about that but i guess not.

But yes Silent gave some very good advice on how to improve so do so and you should have yourself a very nice looking AR.

I don't know, I thought you were really suggesting that Hunter should model a penis onto his gun. SQUAWK!

Actually it sounded like Tweek was being nice that. Lol

do the same you have been doing, but now go to 3000 polies. There is no offensive words or anything there.
And that is good crit. Lol.

If I say thanks Tweek and he comes back here he will probably tell me fuck off and make some sort of insult up.

But.. Thanks Tweek.

(I don't hold grudges unless they are being hold against me, unless I really hate the person)

I will make a lower poly version SilentWind, and do EVERYTHING you have shown in that picture. Lol.

And make bolt bigger.

Thank you hunter.

Post pics when big changes are made, and only then or better yet when its finished.

I dont think many BIG changed CAN be made. It looks very close to finished. The only thin that needs to change is the bolts.

Get rid of the hole in the barrel. You can do that in the texture. Also, make the bolt larger.

Yeah, the grip is one. I will redo that once some people point out if there is much else wrong with it.

Lets put it this way, if you have no intention of ever putting any model into a game, go detail crazy cause it won't matter. But when you're dealing with a game, especially one with an older engine, it's better to be conservative on the detail. Therefor, things like open barrel, flashlight indent, detailed pistol grip, and things of that sort are completely unnecessary. Also it is important to watch the amount of sides on cylinders. A barrel should usually never be more then 12 sides at the most. Also bolt seems fine but it needs to be longer, he doesn't cock the gun with his pinky.

Ah, now you're starting to get the tri count down! It's already down by about a thousand. Try getting it in the 3k area. Just fix it up a bit more, and it'll turn out alright.

e: Yeah, scale up the bolt by like, 70% or something. It's very small.

Hunter
July 15th, 2008, 10:36 AM
I think I lowered the barrel to about 6/7 sides. From looking at my picture I can guess about 8. Because I don't have max open to check, Im going to do more a bit later.
