Well, I'll start off by saying that Halo Wars will be released Spring 2009, according to the FAQ on the Halo Wars site found here : http://halowars.com/faq.aspx
There are also a few gameplay videos, showing off the game in it's current stage, though I thought that these two were the best quality, and showed off the best stuff.

Also, I know that there's a different Halo Wars thread, but that one is about the cinematic trailer, and I didn't want to hijack it.

I much prefer the more detailed looking and less colorful version they had in '07

Yeah, I find myself agreeing with you, though it still looks quite nice. Also, I hate it how the Spartans jump up, then do a flip before boarding...

lol a direct hit from a mac cannon doesn't destroy those wraiths. L A W L.
Also I hate that covenant turret.
E: SNAP, YOU CAN STEAL VEHICLES. My decision has been altered, this game may be epic yet.

Odd, I've seen the strikes take out a Wraith in a single shot.

What you're seeing is probably the difference between single player and multiplayer. The campaign will probably be very detailed and more true to the universe while the multiplayer will be toned down for easier identification of units.

And gameplay balance.
It would be nice if the MAC was an uber weapon in campaign (as it should be, because extremely large caliber rounds impacting the ground from orbit will create quite the shock wave), and more balance-friendly in multiplayer.

Was Halo Wars even shown at E3 today?

Hm, it never occurred to me that this distinction might exist in RTSs. It might be simply natural for modern games to make the distinction between MP and SP, but in my experience with RTSs the single player has always been, aside from the scripting and cinematics, almost exactly identical to the multiplayer. The gameplay mechanics in single player and multiplarer are almost always the same. In that sort of architecture, why shouldn't it be?
*thinks about it for a moment*
Well, because the levels in this game don't seem to be generated from tilesets like the RTSs I'm used to. These levels seem to be hand sculpted in a much more modern and hi-res manner. But to me, that only means that the distinction between multiplayer and single player would come from an intention to spend less time on one or the other.
And that makes me wonder, if that is indeed their reasoning, why would they want to spend less time on multiplayer in a game such as this?
That leads me to think that I'm wrong in my above reasoning, and that if there is a difference between single player and multiplayer levels it is for the sake of visibility and fairness, as Zeph said.
I don't know what to expect from this- will it be like all of my favorite late nineties RTSs, where you play single player to simulate the experience of having someone to fight against, or will it be more like modern FPSs where the single player and multiplayer are distinctly separate?

It was in the first video, I didn't see those 2 explode. In the second one, that one wraith clearly received surprise butsecks.

Well, it is an RTS... maybe it has something to do with upgrades?

There's a booth up and everything, but the media isn't paying much attention. The odd video or feature appears, but not much else.

Perhaps the amount of damage falls off drastically from the center of the strike, so you really have to hit something dead-center.

Is it just me or does everything seem.. weak? I think I saw marines toss 3 frags at a group of grunts and elites and no one died.

From what I read in hands on previews, grenades are tweaked to increase effectiveness against vehicles and turrets.

I know this is a completely different genre, but take halo for example, in the halo 1 campaign, it had very detailed maps for its times, but its mp maps lacked the same quality, though they had fun gameplay.

Why is there forruner stuff on harvest if the first time humans encountered their tech was on halo? :raise:

Halo wasn't the first time they encountered their tech. If you know where to look, you can find lot's of little mentions of Forerunner artifacts long before the events of Halo. It's all an ONI coverup, man! :tinfoil:

Well, according to another source, the game is coming out October 2008. I think this would make more sense, because they said that they were in the final stages of production.

There isn't one. They made Halo wars specifically for the consoles, the game would be shit on the PC anyways.

Yeah, the game was designed, both control and gameplay-wise, for the 360. It just wouldn't work as well on a PC. It's much simpler than a PC RTS game, due to the lack of possible buttons for more features, and it doesn't really use a cursor, so it'd be strange to play it on the PC. If they wanted to port it, it would need a big overhaul.

I don't get how they are milking the series by doing what Bungie originally intended Halo to be.
