View Full Version : [TUT] A Modeling Tutorial

I have started making a series of tutorials aimed at the just above noob level of modeler/map maker. They don't teach you how to use max per say, they (hopefully) teach you how to be a better modeler. The first one apparently my voice is pretty weak, so you may have to turn up your volume, but the other two have that fixed.
1st (168.85mb) 1 hour long (http://files.filefront.com/tut+01+Screen+Stream+trandrar/;10991812;/fileinfo.html)
2nd (256.2mb) 1 hour long (http://files.filefront.com/tut+02+Screen+Stream+trandrar/;11020614;/fileinfo.html)
3rd (425.7mb) 1.5 hours long (http://files.filefront.com/tut+03+Screen+Stream+trandrar/;11023673;/fileinfo.html)
This is what I have at the end of the third video:

http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3355/tut02pictopyj9.jpg
I'm not sure why the 3rd one is so much larger in comparasin to the others, I guess I just moved around a lot.
I know they are all at filefront atm, but if you want them uploaded to another site just let me know and I'll see what I can do :) I haven't left anything out, I haven't skipped any part in this process, except for some prep work that really doesn't need explaining. I will hopefully have some time in the near future to finish atleast the modeling part of these tutorials, but in the mean time enjoy! Feel free to comment, critisize, or ask a question.

What do you model in the videos? Do you have pics of the models? I can't think of anything that you've made, so I dunno if you even know how to model.
(Don't take that as an insult, but it's going to be what most of the people think too.)
Just post up some pics of what you do... unless if it's just a general "This tool does this, and this is how to apply it." type thing.

I model a map. I plan on going from start to finish concept to final product with these videos, but so far in these three I have almost finished modeling. At least I think I'm almost finish, I don't know for sure.

The model looks very good and I'm sure it will be very helpful to the newer modelers. I'll watch it later and tell you what I think.

K-Lite codec pack didn't fix it, still can't view the vid. :[
Maybe upload it to Filefront stream videos?
Or Gametrailers, if you can they have nice quality.

Hmm, I think the codec used is the intel h.264 one, and the k-lite codec pack that I have has that included. Try also using media player classic, its a pretty good comprehensive player thats free. I'm rarely on aim, but I am on msn all the time :)

Alright, I'll add you on my MSN. Although I hate MSN nowadays cuz it don't work on trillian D:
I watched it. About halfway through the first video, I felt really lightheaded cuz you were all like laid back and somehow it was mesmerizing.

That looks very good. If you finished that map and released it as an actual map, I would actually play that map. Looks fun too lmao :awesome:

I do plan on at the very least putting up the finished max file and whatever other files I create up for download, just in case people wanna look, but since I intend to go through the whole process of making a map, I don't see why I couldn't just upload it.

Might I suggest Vimeo for a high quality stream? You, or I, could upload them and it would be sex --- I think :?

Do they take hour and hour and a half long videos?

Dunno, but you can upload 500 megs of HD stuff a week, so... we would need 3 uploaders

VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) FTW! Works for almost any video and audio format.

Almost finished watching the first video, nice job so far, taught me how to use hinge from edge and a few other things I had always wondered about. +rep for you!
But at 1:06:02 I can't figure out what you're doing with the calculator, I followed the steps exactly like you did, but it doesn't give me the correct value for some reason. :\
Is there anyway I can address this?

What I did was find the slope of the polygon so I could put the vertexes directly on the polygon, rather than sticking out slightly like they where. Its a nit picky thing, I found how how far in the x direction the verts were apart then found how far in the y direction they were apart, then used that to find out where the other verts should be.

Extremely sorry to bump, but I felt this was important. The links are down, so if anyone has any mirrors, that would be great! I never got the chance to view these when they were first released.
