Lets say...

... that I owe somebody a lot of money; money I can't pay. If I file for bankruptcy, what happens to the money that I owe the person? Does it just disappear? Does the government have a fund? What's the deal?

NOTE: This thread really shouldn't take long to finish. I'm just looking for a quick answer to a question that came up while talking to friends.
