Hi there! I'm InvaderVeex, IV, IVEE, or whatever you want to call me. And uhh, here's my stuff. I'll update posts as I go.
old crap hidden to protect your eyes. this stuff is really old and crappy. and yes, i know about the spoiler rules.
Stuff somewhat worthy of showing. I started an attempt two months ago at texturing with the dumpster, and did the following. These Are shown in the order I made them. And since I started two months ago, I am still new with this.
NOTE: Models and UVWs (excluding dumpster, that's all mine) WEREN'T done by be.
edit: im changing the topic name in advanced edit, but apply's no change outside of the editing. :(

They look pretty good except for the bad uv on the battle rifle. Also battle rifle looks rather plain.

Needs less grime and scratches, more straight lines. Theres a line tool in photoshop for a reason. Shift + Drag the line into any straight angle. Spartan laser needs work. The random practice one doesn't really have any depth and too many unnatural scratches.

Just threw this together quick, so the corners aren't completely lined up. I would eventually change it too a different color so it don't look like a rip-off of Dane's, but I'm too lazy to upload a pic for you guys. Just simple lighting effects in photoshop.

The Spiker is alright. The metal could be darker I think, but its a good spiker skin.
Also, veex, how do you make such good metal, with all the details on it? I can't get that look.

I love the neon green, mind telling me how you got it like that? :)

Line tool?
killer9856
November 28th, 2008, 05:39 PM
I believe he used a sepreate layer for those neon lines. If you right-click on a layer and click blending option, there is an option called outer glow you use to make a neon glow effect.

i use outer glow and inner glow and for the lines i don't tend to use the line tool i like the polygonal lasso tool to make the shapes on a new layer then right click and stroke 2 pixels wide and click on center then ok. i dno i find it easier this way instead of having to click drag click drag.

Don't let these people blow smoke up your ass. This stuff is in no way great, but it's admirable that your trying. You need to venture more artistically though. So far these are just dodgy looking dodge and burn jobs or something and if they're not, that's what they look like.
It's a start, but nothing artistic or impressive to me yet. Heres a tip, get the fuck away from the guns and weapons and the halo shit. What I owe most of my progression to was my constant little side projects I didn't often show to people, strange level textures and designs, most recent example I can give is this (http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/1761/12at5ei7.jpg). Stuff that forces you to turn outwards creatively and lets you really explore your minds design eye.
Also I might point out, your work all seems to be aiming safe. You don't seem to be pushing yourself maybe because people tell you your awesome.
Tweek, Snaf, Ross and Wave O (more lately my ut3 mod team buddies) are the people I run to for second opinions. I don't care what the fuck anyone else says, because they don't know what the fuck they're talking about.
I'd like to think I've elevated to the point where I know what the fuck I'm talking about now, so heres the deal, when I say it looks good, it looks good. My aim is dano555666.
e* Wait a minute, scratch that last part, you are already talking to me on aim, and you have been since you started getting better :3
I always forget who the fuck people in my aim are on modacity. Soon as I saw your forerunner thing I clicked. You've never shown me any of that other crap though.
Still, my previous stuff still applies.

Yeah... Chewing someone out and then raising yourself above him doesn't exactly strike a high note with me either.
DaneO'Roo
December 14th, 2008, 08:00 AM
No one ever raises themselves above anybody, no one can. You either step up or you fall short. There's no grey area here. I gave him my honest opinion and because I'm the only person in this thread to give actual advice I get blamed for stepping on people.
I'm sick of this fucking protagonist-antagonist based fucking community. You all need someone to post your indignant opinion towards, first chance you can get, to look like some sort of eHero, a good guy. I don't try to do anything, I don't elevate myself above anyone. Myself I am a not perfect at what I do, but I have spent enough sleepless nights and 3 am bedtimes to tell you that I have really really tried at something, and my opinion is worth sharing, regardless how fucking pompous you think I am. If it helps at least 1 person, It wasn't a waste of time.
Quit mistaking knowledge for righteousness. That's your self reflection at work, not my wrong doing. I have experience, I give my honest opinion. There are no bad guys here.
I'm really sick of this noob syndrome thats taken a hold of people. Theres no such thing. You either have the will and the balls to fucking try at something, to dedicate yourself to it entirely or you fall short at it. The problem is, none of you seem to REALLY try as hard as you really should be at "your thing".
You think I give harsh fucking posts, try posting some of your digital work at polycount forums, or gameartisians. You'll be bawing in your creative shell for an hour because a whole community of Tweeks just gave you the most honest expanded critique you've ever had. I had just as rough a time starting out if not rougher. Try being trolled by Veegie, the lord of face eating about how mediocre and pathetic your work is. As much of an asshole I thought he was, I realised he was right and he is now a valid respectable person to me.
I know people are starting out, I know people aren't quite as good at something yet, that's why I test people. If you can't handle the burn and the assholes then you really have no chance. If you really loved something it wouldn't matter how fucked up things were.
Passion == Arrogance at these fucking boards.
Btw Veex, your AR normal has too much contrast in the blue channel, needs too be whither and brighter....... or your line detailing on your diffuse is WAAAY too evident and dark. Let your normal/bump map do those, and only really accentuate those lines by the material AROUND the lines. Utilise natural grime and dust collection and expand on your oxidisation colours on the metal to bring out the edges and the convergance of each particular piece. The whole thing looks monotonal and seems to be a waste for 8 bit per channel RGB. It looks almost cel shaded.
Really look at it, does it look like a gun to you?
