View Full Version : EvE Online: Who plays it?

Bastinka

Well since I'm deciding whether or not I should get EvE, depending on how many people will play with me.

So who plays?

Zeph
August 5th, 2008, 04:07 PM
I play. I got my first carrier earlier this week and am waiting till I can use capital remote armor reps before using it for the swarm. I'm also getting my first dreadnought in two days. I'm in Goonswarm, so unless you have a Something Awful forum account older than a couple of months, you wont be able to join me.

I do. Just got into Recons a few weeks ago and will be in HACs in about a week if I want.

SA and Goonswarm are total fail. Only reason I pseudo support them is I want to see BOB burn.

Unless another alliance challenges them I don't think they'll topple soon. However, this is room to do so. They've been at their peak for a while, someone just needs to push them a bit.

If someone does challenge them, they'll need a lot of resources. Ever since the Alliance's creation, they've been through 7 wars; dominated each. They trade with countless pet alliances giving them a massive resource input.

The proper strategy would be to discretely target and destroy their pet alliances to hinder them economically. Without resources, they would gradually be worn down; kicking them off their throne. However this will take a GREAT deal of time and resources, not to mention firepower, they control at least 8 titans; will gladly use them given the chance.

No, they haven't dominated each. They've won a few wars, but about since Revelations II and sovereignty came into place all their wars have been relative losses or unresolved. Their vassals are all but gone (READ: THEY DONT HAVE PETS ANYMORE). They've been pushed back to one region. The only thing that's keeping them alive are cynojammers used in conjunction with doomsdays. That tactic has been declared unbalanced and is in the process of being revised along with supercapitals in general.

Errr...many Alliances have been challenging them...problem is they've been practically mass-producing Titans...
The Redswarm Federation included Goons, Red, Tau Ceti, IAC, the vassal alliances of the previous four alliances, and a good portion of the Northern Coalition (which at the time included Smash And Roadkill) so yes many alliances have been challenging them.

Everyone is mass producing titans. However, they're not the problem.

While we're on the subject. This was posted today:

We have been looking at suicide ganking and overall security standing issues, and how these features affect the general landscape of EVE. We are not happy with the current ease of suicide ganking and the relative "no hassle" it has become. In many cases, unsuspecting victims have no chance to escape , nor any help from CONCORD. We want to change this.

CONCORD

CONCORD has some issues, mostly that pilots are killed long before CONCORD arrives. We have decreased the response time, meaning they will arrive quicker, and we should see a more helpful CONCORD aiding those in need.

We also changed the functionality and reduced the spawn. CONCORD now spawns in groups of 3 ships: 2 frigate sized vessels, which will lock the aggressor down in place, and a heavy hitting battleship to reduce his or her ship to metal scraps. The frigates will lock almost instantly while the battleship takes longer to lock, and the aggressor is made more aware of his or her impending doom.

Security penalties

Since the beginning of EVE, security penalties have been flat throughout every region of space (excluding 0.0). It has basically meant that the "security level" of a system means nothing, as the same penalty goes in all spaces. Although CONCORD has faster response times in the higher securities, it has not changed the fact that penalties are the same.

Through our research, we discovered that the balance between gaining standing and losing it was not in line with our intentions. It is too easy to gain back lost standing, taking only a few days to erase all the damage done by ganking. This is about to change.

We are increasing the security penalties throughout high-security space. It will be a gradual change, from 1.0 down to 0.1, where the security level of the system will dictate how much penalty you receive for illegal actions against a fellow capsuleer. This means that 1.0 will now be the safest of places, where aggressions and kills will be severely penalized and can quickly outlaw the aggressor from higher security levels. Conversely, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 will see a decrease in penalty, but not a big step down. This should move most ganking to the lower security areas where it belongs.

CONCORD will always frown on pod killing, thus the lowest penalty will not go below its current, which is a 12.5% standing loss. It is still possible to pod kill in high-security areas, and of course those at war or in 0.0 won't be affected.

The changes to security standings will make it harder for players to casually gank another player, and creates a challenge, so that if you are going to kill someone, you better realize the consequences.

Note that the security penalty uses the actual security rating of a system. A system listed with a 0.5 rating, for example, can actually range from 0.45 to 0.54. This means that the penalty can vary from system to system, so don't be surprised if you notice a varied security penalty in similarly rated systems.

Player vs. Player standing penalty

We will also count the standings of the two players involved; this extra variable can affect the total penalty received by a few percent. For example, if an aggressor has a high standing, and the victim negative standing, the aggressor get less of a penalty hit. This works in reverse, too. If you have low and the victim high, you will get an increased penalty.

As it currently stands, every whole point of standing difference will increase or decrease the penalty by 1%. If the aggressor has +5 and the victim -4, the overall penalty would be reduced by 9% (and increased if the other way around).

This is, of course, a major change in the landscape of EVE, but we are confident that these changes and the future plans will make EVE a better experience for everyone.

But what for the future?

We have a taskforce (Named TaskForce Doughnut!) which is dedicated to looking over these changes and proposing plans for the future. We have already started work on the above, but the future holds more changes.

In addition, the highly requested feature of removal of insurance in CONCORD related events will be implemented in the near future.

The CONCORD changes and Security penalty will be hitting TQ this fall, with Empyrean Age 1.1.

Be safe out there!

CCP Fear

So you didn't really figure out how to play the game, and declared it as boring. Way to put some thought into an opinion.

If you had a friend to play with and guide you, it would be a lot more fun. Also, I agree that Mass Effect was pretty good... The dialogue just got really annoying and repetetive, I just wanted it at some parts to just make up its own mind instead of me having to choose what he says which is usually completely obscure to the selection. (I.E. Select > There are other choices > "You know you could always just decide on whats best")

Anyway I'm glad they are finally removing insurance for a CONCORD related loss. It never made sense.

I'll only be truly happy though if they remove insurance completely for:

1. All acts that take place in 0.0 space.
2. Aggressive acts.
3. During any and all wars your insurance should be voided.

This way, only ships that are attacked get insurance, sans those in wars and in nullsec. One can dream...

p.s. HICs are suicide for nanoroams.. they're heavy and fat and can't move when the disruptor is on

I do this as well for both my accounts. Hopefully, I'll be making enough ISK for a third here soon.

For a character starting out, it will probably take you up to two months before you can afford to self sustain yourself on GTCs. If you're new to the game and looking to learn how the best way to do it, hit me up in my ingame channel.

This is a little post battle report I'm going to see about getting posted on my alliances forums. Figured I'd post it here as well.

Had a fun little lag free fight in 77s. Killed two while losing one.
Not sure how much we had in advance to prepare. I logged on and was given a fleet link for HZF defense. Checking Red Arrow, I saw a good number of them listed in 9-9 and 46DP. After moving to the rally point in 77s, our scout on the gate said two blues just jumped out to 46DP. We waited for a few minutes and thought they might have turned around after that. Not a minute later they started jumping into 77s.

Moostang gave the order to warp in and we went to work on the Rooks. One MWD'd away and warped while the other died under a swarm of drones. As it died, I tackled a vagabond 4km off me and sent Ogre IIs on it. While webbed it was going 900 m/s, so I did my best to get the pod. I swear I podded the vagabond, but I didn't get a mail. The Rook's pod warped away with half armor.

We tried to kill more, but without a dictor they just warped off and came back to the gate at zero. The only exception was the nighthawk which hugged the gate the entire fight and jumped as soon as we shot at him.

We held the grid and looted the wrecks and drones.

Kills:
http://killboard.goonfleet.com/km/239953 <- Vagabond. I warped right on top of him and web'd him. He was going 900 m/s. I thought I podded him but no one got the loss mail.
http://killboard.goonfleet.com/km/239952 <- Rook

Losses:
http://killboard.goonfleet.com/km/239951 <- Rapier

Non-gang losses:
http://killboard.goonfleet.com/km/239950 <-Megathron (but it's okay cause he had stabs fitted)
http://axe.griefwatch.net/?p=details&kill=48791 <-Some Amarr BS. Was a yellow wreck, but blue to GS.

edit: found a killmail for the amarr wreck.

=O

I play X3. Have you modded it Wraith? Makes it so much more enjoyable, especially when you can go around blowing up those irritating aliens with an Imperial Star Destroyer, or Galactica (or Pegasus, whichever suits your fancy), or an Omega Class Destroyer from Babylon 5...the list goes on.

As for EVE, if I were willing to pay monthly fees for a game, I would be addicted.

E: Running around as a Shadow from B5, using triple Alpha Kyon Emitters to slice up the enemy is amazing fun (Betas and Gammas are more effective, but they aren't purple, which makes them wrong). Second best thing to do is run around in a Cylon Raider Mk. II with Gatling Mass Drivers and an ammo generator. :-3

The_Wraith
August 24th, 2008, 10:21 PM

Warsaw
August 25th, 2008, 11:38 AM
Definitely need a joystick. A Sidewinder 2 ought to do you well, that's what I use. An X52 might be better though, with all the controls.

Also, lack of afterburners in X3 is a MAJOR frustration in combat, especially to all of us Tachyon/Wing Commander/Free Space graduates...

I'm not having problems with the ship controls as much as the myriad of menus and odd UI structure. Then again, EVE was the same way and 2 years later I know it like the back of my hand.

^_^ My first hot drop, and top damage at that.

We were next door killing shit and someone said on TS that there were some ships at our POS in the system next door and the guns weren't killing them. However, the scramblers and webs had them tackled. Our carriers had just been sitting in the same place acting as a pit crew for an hour and a half while BS warped in for remote repairs. We asked for a hot drop and a recon pilot dropped a cyno. The frigate was dead before I could lock it from friendly subcaps that arrived at the beacon. The BS died before all our ships had cyno'd in.

Anyone else having fun?

I've yet to run into a laggy fleet op, even on roaming suicide trips. Empire is soo much laggier than 0.0 nowadays. Whenever I use Azzana to move things in empire for me, I think I'm getting ganked but it's just that the system is laggy.

And yesh, I do have fun mining ^_^.

I went to bed after getting blueballed yet again last night. I've been glued to Eve hoping to hot drop some bitches the past two and a half weeks. Two hours later, Atlas starting sieging one of our POSs with 20+ dreads. We hotdropped them, sans me and several other EST people that logged for the night.

So Shrike lost his third avatar-class titan. In USD, it's the equivilent to about 8,000 USD.

http://bayimg.com/image/lalccaabl.jpg
Video of the titan's destruction: http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0810/shrike_0001.wmv
It all happened soo fast he didn't get a chance to put his hardeners or reps on. Torpedoes fired didn't even have enough time to travel to him.

This was taken in the fleet fight after his titan died. Thanks to years of software upgrades, lag in Eve is slowly dissappearing. Dont get me wrong, this was still laggy but it was reasonably playable in terms of EVE. Give it a short while for infiniband, CCP's the world's best networking protocol, to be installed on the EVE server and lag will be gone altogether.
