(copy from halomaps cause nobody likes to help you there)

People told me that you cannot load dds files in 3ds Max, yet on my old computer, which ran on XP, could load dds files in the material editor, but i have gotten a new computer since then which is running Vista, and for some reason i get this error when trying to load dds files:

<File Directory>

Error creating Direct3D Device

Anyone know how to fix this?

Is your rendering method is set to D3D and not OpenGl or software? Try changing it. I don't know what good it might do since I use Maya, worth a shot though.

Well that was a long time ago. But the answer to the "load materials in DDS format it comes a mesage saying "Error creating Direct3D device." in Vista is....

goto C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3dsMax8\stdplugs\dxplugins and move both

dds.bmi
dxDDS.bmi

to

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3dsMax8\stdplugs\

then when 3dsmax starts it gives a couple pop ups complaining but everything works fine.
Try this
