View Full Version : New video card

I plan to be getting a new video card for my Bday on october 8, yeah I know its a while away.
I plan to get an 8800gts 512mb, rather than the 640mb because the 640 has a bit lower mhz rates for it :S
Now I only have a 400watt proscessor.
I also have a 200$ budget, Is there a better card I should get?
My assumtion is that It wont support the 8800gts properly, Is that correct?
Also, how much power does it use?
Would it be easier to buy a whole new powersupply for my pc along with the video card, Or buying a seperate one just for it?
Please reply soon, thanks in advance!

By then, new cards would've already come out so the choices you make now may be obsolete by then.

Get an HD4850 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102747) for $150ish and spend the $50 on a new PSU.

That is a fucken cheap video card. The closest to that price we have where I live is $219CAD. It's fucken bullshit!
BTW do what Legionaire said.

Ok, go for the HD4850, but it seems like you already knew that. I have that exact card that legionaire showed you, and it's great. As for the PSU, 450 Watts should work fine, for the card at least, so maybe try to go for something likr 550 Watts, just to be safe.

He wants somebody to recommend him a PSU, not just tell him how many Watts it should have. I'd do the research but i'm off to bed right now.

Well, I'm not the most knowledgeable with PSUs, so there's not much more that I can do to help you out in that way...sorry.

Thanks for the help Guys, I appreciate it.
Im personally not a fan of Ati cards though, they seem to have less support for the games I like to play, So ill stick with the 8800gts. 512mb

Not a good choice over a 4850, you would need a more powerful PSU for the 8800. Not to mention valve gives you free games just for owning ATi cards.

Yeah, the 4850 is much more performant, and the price is similar. Trust us when we say that the 4850 is a better buy.

Well, if he'd rather get an Nvidia card, then we can't stop him. We told him what we would get in his situation, and if he doesn't take our suggestion, then that's up to him, even if we all disagree.

After reading the last few posts I feel rather angered. Maybe we should get benchmarks involved in this thread if they won't listen to recommendations.
Also, how can ATi cards be less supported for a game? I don't understand. Well, you won't have any problems with the HD 4850 anyways, except that it's a hot motherfucker but newer drivers should help fix that.

Or a sweet heatsink :p
get the 4850 if you seriously want to game, and want a card that will last you at least a few years

Well not really a heatsink but an aftermarket fan cooler. I didn't mention it in my previous post because it might scare him away from the card but there is nothing to fear. The temperatures of the card don't affect performance or create instabilities, only a really warm chassis.

Not exactly $50 but it's a damn fine option (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003).
Cheap (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153052), but is made by a reputable company.
Another good option (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341001).
You would be silly to buy an 8800 GTS 512 over an HD4850. Single ATI cards are supported by just as many games as Nvidia cards. ATI cards in crossfire have some incompatibilities with certain games but then again, so does SLI. For the most part these games will run but they will not take advantage of the second card or they will actually perform worse. Once again, this happens with SLI as well.
Judging from your budget you probably aren't going to buy another GPU anytime soon so this issue is null. The ATI card is superior to the 8800GTS G92.

I agree for now the 4850 is probably the better option, even though I am a true Nvidia Fan. I've only owned one ATI card and it was awesome so don't be afraid of ATI.

Also, if you pronounce ATI as though it was a word, it could be pronounced "Atty", and we all know that Atty is awesome, therefore ATI is awesome, so the HD4850 is as well. :eng101:
If that's not a good reason to get the card, then nothing is.

I feel like im betraying nvidia though, every card Ive bought was an nvidia one.

I own the OCZ GameXtreme 600Watt SLI PSU and it works wonders for Crossfire. Never had any problems so I highly recommend that PSU.

Dude, how can an ATi video card be incompatible with games over an nVidia one of a lower class? Give us a list of games you play so we can see what it is you are concerned about.
I feel like im betraying nvidia though, every card Ive bought was an nvidia one.
Seriously dude, by this point in time...fuck nVidia.

I've had two Sapphire Atomic HD 3870s previously which I sold. If you saw what came in the box itself...well it was probably worth more than the card itself and on top of that I still got me free games...that i already had :D In EACH box I got some cold cathode tubes for my case, a FUCKING 9 FOOT HDMI CABLE, my valve black box, two cyberlink programs, and a FULL version of 3DMark 06. Remember, all that is in EACH of the two briefcases I got. I was fucking shocked with glee at the sight of all that shit. Well, I nearly shit myself with happiness. Now not every ATi vendor does that but where the fuck is the nVidia version of that? Huh?

List of games I play:
Hce
CS:S
H2v (barely though)
GoW PC
WoW (there was some incompatibilities with ati, some where fixed, I dont know about all of them)
Im starting to lean towards the hd4850 though.

Well, it's not so much explaining about Valve, it's more of saying which reference card company gives the better value. It was meant to say that regardless of what any other company has done, Sapphire chose to vendor ATi cards, not nVidia ones, and they put a damn good value of shit into the box...more points for ATi. They could have just as easily done that for an nVidia card but did they?

Maybe they need to stuff all that shit in there to make the card appealing. :-3

wraith, no. just no.
ATI ftw. and this is coming from someone with a 8800GTX.
ATI is the better option by far, in fact i've thought about changing to ATI because of that.
Loyalty in the Computing industry is a fools choice, because what have they ever done to you? do they give you extra shit for being loyale and buyign there shit, despite there being Better, cheaper alternatives?
No?
Then go with ATI.
You will fall in love with it.

Ok thanks guys :) Now for me to get a subwoofer, 3 extra speakers, eventually a projector, and then turn off the lights and play a game with 180 degree FOV, true emmersion.
