WASHINGTON - Scientists say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people and objects invisible.

Researchers have demonstrated for the first time they were able to cloak three-dimensional objects using artificially engineered materials that redirect light around the objects. Previously, they only have been able to cloak very thin two-dimensional objects

In short terms, were screwed. Conversate nao.

Well, now we're gonna be nuked by invisible nukes, I can't wait!
/sarcasm

Well, in a way, I'm really excited about this, because it's 100% awesome, but in another way, I don't like it, since it can be used for horrible purposes (invisible nukes, bombs, etc...)

Either way, I'm really interested to see if this will succeed.

So is it going to actually make things 100% invisible, or will there be distortion a la Halo active camo and Metal Gear stealth suits?

Not to mention, the cloaking device may emit large amounts of heat.

Well, if they had stealth as well as invisibility, then it'd be a lot harder to take out. I guess invisibility alone won't do the trick.

Not to mention, the cloaking device may emit large amounts of heat.
True, I didn't think of that, if it does indeed do so.

Wouldn't be difficult to bend light around something that generated light?

It doesn't generate light, it merely reflects it in a spectrum that we can physically see (ROYGBV, most use the indigo in between the blue and violet to make it sound better, I think it was a real name: Roy G. Biv)

Bull shit. How could you see through an object when the object is infront of something.

Don't give me any of your quantum physics shit, It's just not going to work.

From my understanding of a short news report I just saw, this material works by bending light around it's self.

If you had an apple and saw it, you would be seeing the light bouncing off it into your eyes. What this stuff does is instead of having light bounce off it, it has it bend around it so that what you see in front of it is what's behind it (no light is bounced off the object it's self). The light doesn't actually pass through the "invisible" object.

I missed the part where they show it actually works though. :(

if its bending light, then there is surely distortion in the air around it and is of course possible to capture with film

I didn't see any distortion (very end of the clip, there should be that bronze cylinder in front of the clear thing)

I dont get it. What the fuck is invisible?

Far as I'm aware, that glass jar is made of glass, a material that is currently SEE THROUGH.

yea i don't get it...that video explained nothing. The concept is plausible, but proof has yet to be shown. I suppose its possible that the "invisibility material" was inside the glass jar, but we couldn't see it?

There is a bronze cylinder in front of that glass, you see it several times throughout the video. Then when it shows the glass head on the cylinder appears to be invisible...

I don't think so. All it is is a material that bends light around an object, not a device of any kind.

And Heathen, those videos in your post really aren't that amazing at all. Just a cheap trick. All it is is a camera behind him and a projector projecting onto a specialized material. I'm sure no one is going to lug a projector and a camera into battle.

I dont get it. What the fuck is invisible?

Far as I'm aware, that glass jar is made of glass, a material that is currently SEE THROUGH.It's the tiny pellet INSIDE the jar, the one that looks kinda shimmery. You can still see it, but it looks strange.

My bad, I don't see anything either, I looked into the video too much and thought I seen something that I couldn't see. God this is hard to explain. Best bet is to ignore everything I've posted in this thread. I'm an idiot.

Clearly the majority of you people have not heard about plasmonics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasmonics

While it is not covered in the Wiki article, certain meta-materials can be imbued with plasmons to make light bend around it. According to the Scientific American article though, this only worked with round objects.
