they go from obvious photos and video clips to their models. This is fake. If they're able to do all the crap they're promising, it sure as hell ain't photoreal.

What do they have to gain from making a site for a fake project?

Attention.
Still, I think it may actually happen. I can't always be so skeptical as to dismiss everything outright. Fingers crossed.

Update 2: According to this comment (http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/11/liveplace-to-launch-photo-realistic-virtual-world-rendered-in-the-cloud/#comment-2434281), portions of the video are taken from an artist’s portfolio that may not be related to LivePlace (the video he linked to is identical to the first 10 seconds of the clip above). It’s possible that the artist works for LivePlace, but it certainly doesn’t sound like it was rendered in real time…
I'm afraid its not all real time, according to that.

I have a better solution: Go outside, get a job and buy real shit! Not only do you get a photo realistic rendering engine but you get to see real people! Maybe even have sex with them.
/credit to whoever said something like that in a sig on gbx.
The only reason I would play something like this would be to make something that isn't realistic. Example: A big Covenant ship floating in the sky. Something like that.

I wouldn't play a life simulation, I've got my own life to spend time on. It's the games featuring stuff you can't do in RL that I play.

I'd play it just to ogle the graphics

He said that the server will do all the rendering, if there are so many rooms and a lot of people moving those dynamic lights around how can it possibly not lag. I personally think its fake.

Yeah, just don't expect this to come out, or to be what they say it is. So, if it does come out, and it is great, then good, if not, you meet your expectancy, so you don't really lose anything.

I agree. Even Second Life is just too normal for it to be at all appealing to me. The ability to be rich and change my appearance and fly and not be so antisocial just isn't enough. I need aliens to fight, or something.
I think that what we really need is the virtual reality internet already. I mean shit man, what's taking so long? Give us a massive sprawling city metaphor for the internet, and let us browse it in 3D. If this City Space thing had that purpose in mind, then I'd be all over it, but as it is it's just a passing curiosity.

I doubt all of it's pre-rendered. You can see stuff changing LOD as he moves around.

Does it matter? Lets just talk about whether its bullshit or not when it does, or doesn't come out.
If it does :awesome:

I did kind of think that was rediculous...but he did say that on the video.
Did you even watch the entire thing Snaf?
Rob Oplawar
August 17th, 2008, 03:48 PM
I get the feeling that they don't actually mean realtime- that the basic version that cheap computers and maybe even cellphones can run is just a Myst style thing, where it loads a single image, and then you change stuff and interact with the world and it returns another single image, shown at anything but 30 frames per second.
Still, I'm highly skeptical of even that.

Yes, but are you going to trust a company that steals a video from an online portfolio and presents it as part of the project>

At first I thought I was looking at GTA IV! It's hard for me to say if it is real or not. Sounds good but also impossible.

The one part that really made me believe that this isn't real is the part where you can access your computer through the pictures, there's just something there that doesn't seem right.

It's not. Tom's Hardware mentioned it last month, especially the particulars about the server, which is running many ( I don't remember how many) HD4870s.
