You'll love college, are you saying in halls?

Atty
August 17th, 2008, 02:39 PM
No, I'm living at home for now, since I'm not that far away from campus. I'll be moving to another school after my associates is done and then I'll be living in an apartment.

Hope you come back alive. ;)

Wait, I thought you were already in college... this is your first year? Damn, way to make me feel old.
Man, that sucks for you- your classes are starting a week earlier than mine, and you have 8am classes. Well, I guess it's normal for Freshmen to get screwed on their schedules. By now I consider anything before 10am to be just way too early.

Well, grats on moving on to the best four years of your life, although it doesn't count until you move out on your own.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you going, and what school are you planning on switching to?

Christ, I'm a Junior already? Hell, I'm already halfway done!

I'm at PCC/USF Lakeland campus. No idea where I want to go after my two years, depends on what I choose to Major, which I should probably get around to figuring out.

Also, I chose all early morning classes. :-3

2 year college/ 2 year university collaborative set-up? It's quite popular.

Atty

It'll be longer at University, well, I think it will be at least. I'm doing a masters in whatever field I plan to major in.

Did I miss something? It must just be a nomenclature thing... what's the difference between "College" and "University"? Also, 'swrongwitchu?! All morning classes, on purpose?!
Also also, may I recommend CS as a major- it's fun, easy, applicable, and quite broad.

I go back in a week... Kinda ready for it, just want to get this year out of the way so I can transfer. 8am-12:30 or 1:40 (depending on the days) :-3

I'm starting College sometime in September, I should find out when :3

Not looking forward to the walk there, though. Was completely exhausted after getting home on an open day, but that was probably because I hadn't moved from my chair for 8 weeks. Not looking forward to the first day though, since any great change makes me feel uncomfortable for a while until I'm used to it.

Also also, may I recommend CS as a major- it's fun, easy, applicable, and quite broad.I'm currently listed as Computer Science but I also want to do Business as a minor, simply because it's a good thing to have to round out my portfolio.

Also, College as in Community, as in staying at home, University as in, living there? I don't know, that just makes sense to me.

Rob Oplawar
August 17th, 2008, 05:18 PM
oic. Makes sense. Well, a friend of mine is doing a quadruple major in four years, with CS being his primary major. He may be insane, but I'm just sayin, doin CS with a bit of business on the side is quite reasonable. Don't do what I did, though- don't fall into the anti-social trap that is Engineering school (CS is an Engineering degree, btw). If you're not careful, then before you know it the whole year has gone by and you've made like a good engineer and focused all your time at school deliberately and efficiently on schoolwork.

I really don't want to do CS though, what am I going to do with it as far as a job is? Programming? Eck, do not want to spend my life in front a PC with 1's and 0's and [/]'s, will be huge fail. Want to do something exciting that makes big bucks. :[

Terin
August 17th, 2008, 05:31 PM
It's not 1's and 0's, it's semicolons and brackets now! :awesome:

I'll definitely be majoring in Computer Science. I dunno about you, but the aspect of creating something from scratch that can do almost anything I want it to do is pretty awesome. Although minoring in business is a good idea, as well.

Rob Oplawar
August 17th, 2008, 05:32 PM
That's what I love about CS- it is such a broad category that it includes all kinds of stuff. Network administration, computer hardware repairs, programming, webdesign, game design, etc. And lots of those CS based jobs easily make 6 figure salaries. But if you're not into computers one way or another, then yeah, CS probably isn't for you.
But hell, having a CS major doesn't restrict you to a career in computers anyway. Lots of employers just want you to have some sort of degree, and don't care overly much about what it's in. CS is one of those good all-around majors.

e: but maybe I'm just justifying my decision after-the-fact. No but srsly, I'm happy with my choice. I agree with Terin- the creative potential here is overwhelming. I love it.

Yea that's how I feel. Was going to attempt something with computers back in the day. These days I'm in pursuit of a major in Exercise Science once I get my Associates in "General Studies- Associate of Science". Only one more year to go! :)

You're only going to your first year now? I thought you were older, and you're not the first person I've made that mistake on. I still have 2 years before going to University.

Modacity's age is pretty 13-19ish based, which is surprising, based on our maturity.

Yeah, I know how you feel Atty. I'm pretty much going through the same thing. Computer Science would be the easiest thing to go into for me, but I don't want so sit behind a cubicle 24/7 managing thousands of lines of code.

But yeah, my first day of college doesn't start until September thankfully. I'm pretty excited because of the new freedoms everyone claims you have, and the fact that there'll be alot more...candy.

Also Rob, I don't know about the US, but over here College is basically around 2-3 year thing and then university is after that. Atleast, that's how people refer to them; not sure if its really correct.

Just looked it up.

From Wiki:
In U.S. usage, the word "college" embodies not only a particular type of school, but has historically been used to refer to the general concept of higher education when it is not necessary to specify a school, as in "going to college" or "college savings accounts" offered by banks. "University" is sometimes used in such contexts by Americans who wish to avoid ambiguity, for example in the context of Internet message boards where the reader hail from a different English speaking country.

A university is an institution of higher education (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_education) and research (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research), which grants academic degrees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_degree) in a variety of subjects. A university provides both undergraduate education (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undergraduate_education) and postgraduate education (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postgraduate_education). The word university is derived from the Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin) universitas magistrorum et scholarium, roughly meaning "community of teachers and scholars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academia)".[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University#cite_note-0)

Dammit, I just remembered that I was too lazy last semester and didn't take enough credits, so I'm not officially a Junior, but I was signing up for classes that Juniors and Seniors usually take, so I got screwed on my schedule. Classes every day, starting at 9:00. Damn.

Atty
August 19th, 2008, 05:16 PM
Haha, didn't do summer courses? :p

I'm going straight through or well, at least the first summer session. Get a few classes out of the way, if possible.

Christ I am bored.
[rant]
I have nothing to do on this damn hour break, I've already transposed, wikipedia'd, and expanded upon all my notes, done my homework, and done all my social networking fail related ventures for the day in the last 20 mintues. So bored, wish OS X let me play games.

September 2nd for me. Going to a local "university" to do essentially film school. Pretty gung ho about this except for maybe the 6 course load. Dear God first day of school is from 8:30 to 4:30...And I end every day at 4:30. Thank god I can wake up late 2 days a week. Big bonus: Friday's off so 3 day weekend.
