I have sorted the digits 0-8 into two groups:



Group A:

0,1,4,5,6



Group B:

2,3,7,8



Which group does 9 belong in, why? (You must explain this one is detail)

One possible solution is group B. That would allow both groups to have two sets of sequencial numbers. Group A would have zero turning into one and four running to six. Group B would then have two turning into three and seven running into nine.

Group A, 4+5 = 9 Then Group B would have 10 which is 3+7 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

That's all I can think of.

^That's what I thought too.

It's group A though.

All I can think of is the sequential thing, but I have suspicion that's not it. I think the riddle is only interesting if the answer has something to do with the properties of the numbers. The only properties I could think of could be summed up by the factors of the numbers:


0 n/a 2 12
1 1 3 13
4 124 7 17
5 15 8 1248
6 1236 9 139

Group A goes: n/a, square, square, prime, regular
Group B goes: prime, prime, prime, regular.
Maybe 9 just belongs with the other squares? But then why doesn't 5 belong with the other primes, and where do the non-prime and non-square numbers fit in?

I'm stumped. The answer better be good.

e: do you suppose the grouping is not because of similar properties but because of their position in a sequence? The fact that we're using all integers from 0-9 indicates otherwise to me.

*gives up and follows link* oh, ehhh, meh, I admit I didn't think of it, but it's kind of lame. Now that I re-read the question, though, I see the hint plain as day. That's the nature of a riddle; you have to pay attention to the specific wording they use to know what answer they want.

riddles make me feel dum. :(

I thought of it, but I didn't consider it to be a number that could end up at the end of a square.

Riddles dont have more than one answer. They're in the eye and mood and the beholder.

Ahh interesting. Well it appears we have come across the "correct" answer, but I believe that there could be other ways of logically putting 9 into either group. Thanks for the help, all!

Earth doesn't keep cold things cold. The icecaps - they are melting!
It also doesn't hold solids or liquids, we removed of them from the Earth quite easily.
