So, Purple rein was officially revealed at PAX today. There isn't much information about the map but Bungie was kind enough to show us some Hi-Resolution screenshots!

Here's (http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/08/29/pax-2008-video-runthough-of-new-halo-3-map-assembly/) also a low-quality video (http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/08/29/pax-2008-video-runthough-of-new-halo-3-map-assembly/) run through taken by someone at PAX.
From what I hear, the map doesn't feel as cramped as it looks, and is actually very fun. A viewer claimed that the sky-box is one of the best in halo 3, and that the screenshots do not do it justice.
It is said to have an "arena" feel to it, and it also looks pretty spectacular. It seems to be like the offspring of midship and gemini in a way.
Can't wait to try this map.

Lil' late, but glad you found the video, didn't see it. Looks pretty cool.

When I first saw this I was like OSHI MIDSHIP!

Is there a video? I'd love to see how much of that is a painting and what's geometry.

I love the grand epicness it has with that structure there. This isn't a remake right?

Wasn't it called Purple Reign?
Anyway, I find that this map looks quite beautiful, especially that huge structure in the backround in the last pic. I wonder what the story is behind this map?

I imagine it has something to do with a Covenant factory of some sort.
EDIT: Judging from the scale of the map, I assume it is a Covenant ship building station of some sort. Looks like fun!

Parts of it look like a covenant construct.

The layout looks like a mix between derelict and midship. Naice.

Just to point it out, I simply corrected the spelling mistake since the definition of reign might actually mean something for the map's storyline.
I was looking at the definitions of the high-rez pics at Bungie.net, and one of them was "Horror Factory". So, that didn't really click right away, but I knew that it had something to do with the Covenant's Reign, hence the name "Purple Reign". I was thinking about it, and I remembered it being mentioned in a past Weekly Update that there would be a map that would shed more info on the Scarabs, and whether the Lekgolo control them or not.
So, it just came to me, what if Assembly (another hint) is a Scarab Manufacturing Center? The Covenant use Scarabs to prolong their Reign over the universe, and they must need to be Assembled somewhere, right?
That's just my theory, but I find that it makes sense.

Well, I'd get rid of the purple reign theories because Assembly already makes perfect sense as a name where they assemble scarabs. I think Purple Reign was just a funny code name because they can have whatever internal name they want, and Prince is the shit.

According to a guy off another forum, the pipes have hunter worms in them. So yes, I guess you are somewhat right there hotrod. As for the spelling mistake, my bad, I missed the g button. I'd fix it but I can't.

The original project name was project cotton ball.

No, that first shot there looks very, VERY similar to Derelict's first level.

Most fo it is geometry, and nades bounce really weird off of the ground becuase of it from when I played it.
The map seems like a derelict remake to me with a few differences, same basic layout.

A quote from Biohazard from modhalo.net.
well i was at pax today, i didnt get recon, for that matter didnt even get to play in the recon challange but got to play assembly or "purple reign". it was hard to see what the surrounding senery was like but there i did hear some people talking about it. first of: its a scarab factory.think of the name. on the ceiling theres a large conveyor type thing and ocassionally scarab pieces go across it. i heard there that the scarab parts go somewhere, and you can see hunter worms being injected to it somehow.then the scarab part is moved to a different place and it looks different. this should confirm the rumors about "the scarab on the new map"

Extracted from the .xex. Turns out there pre defined. The new map names are Assembly, Longshore, and Citadel.

I always called the hunters Mr. and Mrs. Cotton :|
Since every instance they came in pairs of 2, and one (Mrs.) stayed back and shot you, while the other (Mr.) got pissed at you insulting his wife.

Wait, how can you figure that out if the maps aren't realeased, or even announced yet?

The cache. I guess Bungie had already decided the names for them.

Well, one of them is a human space station. Longshore doesn't seem to make sense, and humans usually don't have "citadels". I'm not sure if those are all the final names.

Actually. It was from the recent halo 3 update we had.

A longshoreman is someone who works around docked ships, usually loading and unloading. I wouldn't be surprised if it was similar to elongation; a space station shipping center.

The patch .xex only shows names so it doesn't show the .map name or any hints of it.

They've even said that the map plays similar to Elongation, but is not a remake of it - maybe something along the same lines, with the moving conveyor belts or massive amounts of boxes.

It was said that it has a large chasm, though, like Boarding Action had. Although the name could still apply.

Maybe its a h3 version of one of the hanger maps.

I hope it'll be set somewhere near the level "The Storm"
Or floodgate.
The atmospheres in those levels were awesome.

Didn't they already say in an update that it was an abandoned space station, that had something to do with Shaw Fujikawa?

It is an abandoned space station that has a shrine to Shaw and Fujikawa for their invention of the slipspace drive.
