I took a trip to the lake district on Sunday 6th September 2009 and unfortunately fell ill on that night, so I only have a few photographs from that day I'll be uploading. Due to me falling very ill we had to go home, and the moderately short trip i had planned was cut much much shorter.

All of it looks 'OK' but none really grab my attention. Although I do like the second dog one and sunset boulevard. The 360 controller one looks nice too, its one of those "looks better in a picture than it does in real life" type of things.

Not bad I like the Half Room Panoramic and the 360 controller.

Not bad I like the Half Room Panoramic and the 360 controller.

They're all multi-room set-ups with Sky+/HD. Well except my room, i've got normal sky still.

You composed all your subjects dead center, which isn't very interesting. Of course, stuff still can be placed there, but in general it's more attention grabbing if the object is composed off-center.

Just updated the GALLERY with today's....

Reaper Man
September 7th, 2008, 04:31 AM
With that shot of the bricks on the ground, you should've used a smaller aperture (there's no EXIF data, so I can't tell which you used, but I do know you could have stopped down more) and focused about a third of the way into the frame = maximum depth of field for that aperture.

The wall closeup shouldn't have been shot at such a high ISO. As a rule of thumb, try to shoot at the lowest ISO possible - giving you a finer photo with more dynamic range.

I see what you're trying to do, but to be honest your choice of subject isn't really exciting, try getting to a different angle - it's as if you shot down at that rusty hinge, getting down to its level would probably yielded a more interesting shot.

Your lens seems to suffer from pretty significant barrel distortion, you should try correcting for that post-process.

Finally, time of day - you seem to shoot at around midday (from the looks of it). While this isn't always a bad thing, generally it yields shots with little or no atmosphere, the shadows are harsh and directly below the subject. Try shooting in early morning or late afternoon where shadows are long and interesting, while subjects are more interestingly side-lit.

Tl;dr - Work on your composition and subject choice, consider the light more not just the subject alone.

I hope I don't come off as demeaning.

Nope, never heard of them, although i don't travel around to much so.

Well I live quite up north I live near Hull, so it sucks HAHA, but its good having some nice views around, although we're not as lucky as some, who live in New Zeland though, i love to live there...just gorgeous!

Nope. Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge is the fifth largest single-span suspension bridge in the world and bridges traffic across the mouth of the Humber. Where the Humber meets the North Sea.

Hey take prolonged shots where you also zoom in while the shutter is open (bad term), those are pretty fun to take.

WHATS WITH THE FRINGING?!

Reaper Man
August 20th, 2009, 07:17 AM
Ehhh, you really need a GND filter. Failing that, shoot HDR.

Consider the content of your photos more. For example, the tree one - there's a nice tree, but then there's an ugly power pylon in the background, also, crazy chromatic aberration. The one above that, zoom blur, fun technique, boring subject. Twisted Nature - nice idea, very cramped composition, could show a bit more of the bridge there.

In a nutshell: a photo should be interesting due to its composition and content, not due to the editing (typical thing people do - thankfully you don't) or the fancy technique used (there are obvious exceptions to this). A zoom-blurred photo of a clump of otherwise boring trees is still a boring photo, that has zoom blur.

Disaster Story in SHORT:
-Camera Broke
-Sent to sony for repair
-They came back and say £350 to repair
-I say fuck off
-They send me back
-I buy brand new full kit Sony A330 (fairly recent release too)
-I use to have an A200 btw.

So moral of that story in short, Sony are money mingebags!

Anyway, here's some new photographs...
Some very odd...some normal.

Its a mistake many make.

Reaper Man

The rides looks cool, but the second one could be better composed - needs context, like the surrounding area, otherwise it's just a bunch of lights. The wide vista of the fairground is real trippy, I like it, however there is an awful lot of negative space.

Your black and white street photo appears a little underexposed, that's what happens when you meter off a white surface - the light meter tries to render everything as a neutral gray to get the correct exposure, and therefore underexposes whites. Otherwise, it's well composed, I like how the fence leads your eyes to the person sitting on the steps.

MUCH nicer! The people add context to the shot and in general, make it more interesting. I make it a habit to try and include people in all my shots.

Shame about the people on the right of the shot, it'd look so surreal if it was just the two people silhouetted in the center.

I did a quick crop of the photo, not sure if it works, but whatever, I just wanted to see what it would look like:
