P0lar asked me a question a few weeks ago which was originally a discussion between him and Bod. I've been thinking about this question on and off, and it's the foundation for this topic.

What are your top five favorite songs? Not your favorites from the past couple days that you can't get out of your head, but the ones which you could never get tired of no matter how many times you listen to it. The ones that you heard once and have stuck with you for months or years. List the song name and the artist.

Now, for the critical thinking. What is it that these five songs have in common? What makes them your favorites? Is there anything that ties them together, or are they all unique in certain ways? How do they appeal to you?

Oops, typo, and loss of thought.

All of my songs are catchy, and they are all different, yet good. I guess that's all I can say.

I have two different sets, vocal and instrumental, due to the fact that each has its own appeal to me for different reasons.

Vocal:
In Flames - The Chosen Pessimist
In Flames - Transparent
Lacuna Coil - Virtual Environment
Lacuna Coil - A Current Obsession
Lifehouse - Simon

Instrumental:
Halflife 2: Episode 2 Soundtrack - Eon Trap
Vir Heroicus - p implies q
Vir Heroicus - You Made This Room Secret
ZhayTee - Celestia
ZhayTee - Omnia

All songs and artists listed in alphabetical order, due to the fact that I love them all so much and could not rank them against each other in a timely fashion.

I might be back to give reasons as to why I love each song, but I'll save that for another day.

Fuck me. I just spent 20 minutes compiling a list and it went away because I got logged out and then I pressed the wrong button.
THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN IN MY FORUM SYSTEM. No srsly, I have a handy feature for that...

Anyway, fuck if I'm gonna go through all my music again to find the songs I picked.

I like alt rock, and I tend to hate angry music, with System of a Down excepted because it's more hilarious than it is angry.

Off the top of my head:

Shine on you Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
Learn(ing) to Fly - Pink Floyd/Foo Fighters
Good Times Bad Times - Led Zeppelin
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Paradise City - Guns 'n' Roses

And probably around 30 or so others (Some classic NZ songs, more Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam come to mind) that I can't think of. I guess they all let me drift off somewhere else, I can forget about everything and just listen.

Lateralus - Tool
The Noose - A Perfect Circle
Timelessness - Fear Factory
Emotion Sickness - Silverchair
The Cure - The Same Deep Water As You

They're all songs that go for a lengthy duration, they all seem to start off slow and progressively get stronger and different and are the few songs I've never grown sick of playing.

There's a lot more than 5, but for the thread and everyone's eyes' sake I'll post 5 that come to mind right now:

Smile Like You Mean It - The Killers
Soul Kitchen - The Doors
Australia - The Shins
Everlong - Foo Fighters
Knights of Cydonia - Muse

Oh and I have to list this one because my brain is screaming not to leave it out for some reason.: Willing Well I: Fuel For The Feeding End - Coheed & Cambria.

I think what makes a good song is that you can always play it and it will suit your mindset and mood. You'll feel good listening to it because it'll be like the soundtrack to moments of your life.

i dont really keep a record of songs i like alot of things over alot of different genre's, but theres teh shiver test, where a part of a song just zero's home and hits chords within you and makes you shiver.
Thats a brilliant song to me.

Comfortably numb - Pink floyd
wait and bleed - Slipknot
One S&M version Metallica
Emotion sickness - Silverchair
World so cold - Mudvayne
Cemetary gates - Pantera
It's hard to speak without a tongue - Parkway drive
a tout le monde - Megadeath
Kim - Eminem
Tool - Right in two.

yeah, im gunna stop there. But these songs at some point in my life leveled me and brought me to my knees before rebuilding me again.
Thats what makes a good song to me, not just a song that has good lyrics or a catchy beat.
and i cant possibly choose between them.

The New Black - Everytime I die
Bitches - Hollywood Undead
New Song - Sublime
Notorious Thugs - Scary Kids Scaring Kids
Won't Let you Down Texas Takeover Remix - Chamillionaire ft. Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Bun B., Pimp C. & Z-RO

All of these songs pump me up to no end. I feel like (even more of) a douchebag when I listen to them.

Disturbed - Overburdened
Linkin Park - Figure.09
R.E.M - Losing My Religion
Arcana - Innocent Child
Enya - Caribbean Blue

Good lyrics are a must for me...also I tend to like more or less depressive music (I'm not depressive...it just gives me a good feeling inside and I can concentrate pretty good while listening).

Thats exactly my thought. All of those songs I listed are the basic moods of my everyday life.

Guns and Roses-Welcome to the Jungle
The Killers-Somebody Told Me
Blink 182- All the Small Things
Jay Z and Linkin Park- 99 Problems(Points of Authority)
Angels and Airwaves- Secret Crowds

There is a certain part in each song that never leaves my head. My favorite overall is The Killers. It kind of makes me in a happy mood everyday.

Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden
Dance of Death - Iron Maiden
The Trooper - Iron Maiden
Prolong Your Fate - Naildown
Murmaider - Dethklok

There's just so many that I like, I can't really say that all of those belong in my top 5, but they're the only ones I can think of right now, and they are all still bitchin songs.

1) Don't Fear The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
2) Losing My Religon - R.E.M
3) Rooftops- Lost Prophets
4) Send Me On My Way - Rusted Roots
5) Amber - 311

My top five change a lot, nothing really in common other then I like a blend of old and new. I think.

My top 5: (load only one at once)

http://p0lar.modacity.net/mp3/Remedy.mp3
http://p0lar.modacity.net/mp3/SearchAndDestroy.mp3
http://p0lar.modacity.net/mp3/HearMeKnocking.mp3
http://p0lar.modacity.net/mp3/PsychobillyFreakout.mp3
http://p0lar.modacity.net/mp3/PartyHard.mp3

Rep to whoever can find a viable link besides them being hit singles, in a video game, or both, between these songs. Can't be because they're fast (Remedy and Can't You Hear... are slower), they're all different genres and artists, so wtf?

I think the only song that has been able to suit me regardless of mood is Ballroom Blitz - Krokus

Tears of the Dragon - Bruce Dickinson

awesome song, definitely ties something in my five D:

They're all covers.

Remedy and Party Hard are master tracks.

And as for the covers, I can listen to the master tracks and like them, though I prefer the covers because, for S&D, the RHCP version sounds less washed out than the Iggy Pop version, the GH2 covers sound cleaner, and the Can't You Hear Me Knockin' cover is shortened.

Limp Bizkit - Stalemate.

now that right there is a brilliant fucking song.

Strung out - Mind of my own.
This was and still is one of my favourite songs ever.
It's punky but it's fucking awesome.
SZOi6xoPYg8

It's four o' clock
the t.v.'s on
my mind is shut off
and my own thoughts are gone
I change the channel
I change my mind
I change my life
I wanna leave it all behind
cause I don't have a mind of my own
I am influenced by
everything I see
and I can't help it now
everything in my life
just thinks for me
can't help this habit
I'm in love with my disease
worshiping my idle time
a life I cannot seize
trapped by depression
and I sleep all day
but xanax, valium, attavan
makes it all ok
it's so much more
than a cry for attention
no loving hands can sooth this ache
so much more than a war with the world
it's my own degradation
it's my own self hate
I preach my pessimism
right out loud to anyone who'll listen
I'm not afraid to be alive
I'm afraid to be alone
late at night my monsters find me
from under the bed or out of my past
all alone with nobody to talk to
sanity gets put to the test
I close my eyes but I'm still haunted
sometimes I get too twisted to sleep
as all my world crumbles all around me
inspirations become admissions of defeat
cuz I don't have a mind of my own
everything in my life just thinks for me.
