Anyone have any thoughts as to what's going to happen? Personally, I think either it's going to not work or the findings will be completely insignificant, but I've heard that some people think it'll cause the end of the world.

Or best case scenario, the world gets sucked through a portal and then we end up at the garden of eden, where we should be.

The Big Bang Theory
Best Case: The Large Hadron Colliders' ALICE experiment successfully creates quark-gluon plasma, a substance theorized to have existed just milliseconds after the Big Bang. By generating temperatures more than 100,000 times hotter than the sun, scientists hope to watch as this particle goo cools and expands into the particles that we know. That could help scientists answer why protons and neutrons weigh 100 times more than the quarks they're made of.
Worst Case: Scientists inadvertently make a micro black hole, and the earth is quickly erased from existence. Just kidding: scientists at CERN and elsewhere have ruled out the possibility that the LHC will create any kind of doomsday scenario. The black holes that the LHC could theoretically create don't even have enough energy to light up a light bulb. On the other hand, the U.K.'s Astronomer Royal put the odds of destroying the world at 1 in 50 million (http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/06/30/doomsdaycollider.ap/index.html) (which puts it in the realm of possibilities but still not as likely as hitting the lottery).

What is happening on the 10th September?

The start-up!

This date will see the first attempts to place particles called protons into the LHC and get them to circulate around the 27 km ring – an important milestone in commissioning the machine. In the days and weeks that follow, engineers will fine tune the accelerator and commission the four detectors. Do not expect particle collisions, or amazing new scientific discoveries on the first day of commissioning.

The LHC will initially operate at low energy and ramp up to full collision energy of 14 TeV next year. Keep watching this space for the latest progress.

SHENANIGANS!!!

September 9th, 2008, 11:57 PM
chill, my friend read an article (presumable on newscientist.com which he reads all the time) that calculated it would take 32 light-year long particle accelerators focused on one point to "damage" the fabric of space. I don't think the LHC will cause any problems.

Actually, the German nuke physicists (or the ones who weren't Jews and therefore working for the Allies) couldn't work out how to get enough uranium into the bomb to actually cause the explosion. They were confused as to how the Allies had managed, when in reality all they'd done was enrich the uranium.

10 Things We're Looking Forward To Now That The Large Hadron Collider Is Running

1. Suddenly much harder to get particle beams insured
2. Brief, sudden portal to empty dimension where we can dump all those Sansas
3. The return of that battleship we lost in the Philadelphia Experiment
4. Last minute lawsuit from Fox that claims they have rights to make a Hadron Collider and they just now noticed it
5. Crazed Doctor McCoy falls through, meets a woman, has to watch her die to stop the Nazis
6. "Hadron" replaces "Caden" as the hot new name for baby boys
7. All Swiss chocolate now tastes a little strange but no one knows why
8. New particle discovered, named after Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog
9. Fred Phelps opens godhatesbosons.com
10. Buyer’s remorse from the scientists as they realize that the Extra Large Hadron Collider was only thirty nine cents moreI haven't seen any freak out, or even talk about the LHC where I live. I guess some places at a little more level-headed than others.

Its a little funny, but not original. You know everyone thought it right away when they saw it.

If we wake up one day to find a black hole consuming part of our room, we can just blame those damn Europeans. They can never do anything right :downs:

Otherwise, really, we all die sometime, and the years at the end are doomed to suck, so hey what do we have to lose!

I would rather die by black hole than by old age.

I'm pretty sure death by black hole would be the most painful experience of your life for the fraction of a second it took.

I'm pretty sure death by black hole would be the most painful experience of your life for the fraction of a second it took.
And I'm pretty sure it would happen so fast that your whole body would be crushed into a singularity before the signals had time to travel from your nerve endings to your brain.

No but srsly, the whole concept is asinine. All I can do is lol at the people who are scared of this happening.
