What's with all the "..." in that weather warning >_>I think it's a standard for reporting weather warnings in text. I don't know why, though.

Time to send offline rude messages to people who live on the coast, and to sit back and watch the show :downs:

My grandparents live in Galveston. In fact, they've lived there for going on 40 years, I think, and survived many a "killer hurricane". According to them, the media always report huge surge predictions in the 10-20 ft range (the seawall is only about 14 feet, I think[strike] 17 feet, while their house is only about [strike]5 20 feet above sea-level), but the non-media-inflated predictions are always much lower than that. They haven't evacuated for a hurricane in many years, and have announced their intention to maintain that bold tradition.
Even so, I can't help but be really worried for them every time I hear of a hurricane in the area. It does happen every so often that hurricanes totally destroy that area. :/
edit: corrected the elevations above

seawall is 17 feet and water is pushing over it already and breaking up the road. the piers are already falling down 12 hours before the storm hits land.
you better hope they left...
pretty strong message when the chief of police tells people that are staying to write their SSN on their arms.
i live around the seabrook/kemah area about a mile from galveston bay and i expect my house to at least flood.

Even more fun for the weekend. Gasoline shortages are showing up in the SouthEastern states. Chattanooga and Knoxville are the two biggest places around me, with Knoxville less than an hour and a half away. They're trying to pull gasoline from anywhere they can, and judging from gasoline prices, I'd have to say they either pulled a lot from my city or we're about to face the same thing.

Just talked to my mom about it, who is more in touch with my relatives than I. The gist of it is, my grandparents on both sides of the family as well as my Aunt and her family are all at risk, and none of them are leaving. We don't expect anything bad- in fact, we think there probably won't be any damage to their homes, but I'm still biting my nails here.
Arg, seems like this happens every year.

Yeah, I live in Corbin Ky, not to far from Knox, and well gas prices here shot up to 5 a Gallon. That's high for around here, especially since my area 7 dollars an hour is the average pay for anyone..
Sucks, My family in Claiborne county, TN, (Speedwell) are feeling it too.

unless your grandparents are rich and live on the highest part of the island and their home is made of steel beams they are going to get damage.

Ty for so directly and openly insulting my family.
*puts mark in "People who annoy me" list*
My dad's parents have a house on stilts in an area extremely unlikely to get high winds, so the worst they'll get is some annoying but mostly harmless flooding. My mom's parents don't listen to the media, they listen to the reports from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and have for the past 50 or so years, having lived on the coast that long, and they know what they're talking about. And I'm not really worried about my Aunt, who lives quite far inland, although her zipcode officially has been instructed to evacuate.
e: Corrected above- I was grossly mistaken: my grandparents' house is actually above the level of the seawall, at somewhere like 20 feet above sea-level.
They say the water level is right at the top of the seawall right now, with massive waves crashing over, but the whole thing is very well designed, and very well drained, as is my grandparents' neighborhood.

This is shaping up to be a really bad storm. Hopefully this is handled much better than Katrina. Although I'm almost certain anything would be better than that disaster.

Of course it will be handled better. Our dear old president owns land there.
