View Full Version : What the HELL

So I had trend micro antivirus and it expired, and I decided to give avg 8.0 a try. Well, it started detecting GAMESPY as an adware threat, and I told it to ignore. Well, now, NONE of my games get online (halo says error connecting to gamespy master server), and then my internet connection completely dies... I tried a system restore to before the install, and now when I try to play halo it can't find config.txt or w/e.

What the hell. Anyone else have this problem?

Try removing your network card drivers/motherboard network drivers and reinstall them, there's a chance it will see your connection as a new one after you reinstalled the drivers, so it could work.

The problem is gamespy, not my internet. I can connect perfectly fine unless i go for online gaming. As I said, avg detected gamespy as a threat and did not ignore it even though i told it to. Uninstalling avg did nothing, system restore did nothing. Reinstalling gamespy did nothing. If i can get online for web browsing, my problem is not with my drivers/hardware. This is strictly software related.

It could be that with uninstalling avg, gamespy remained blocked, could be in the registry or some files left behind. Maybe you could ask it in some sort of tech forum.

Maybe look in here, not entirely the same, but it could be of some help. http://www.gamereplays.org/community/index.php?showtopic=136629

dude...You don't NEED gamespy to run Halo online. I do just fine without it.

Unless there's something I'm not getting with the way you work.

The Gamespy software isn't needed to run Halo online, but keep in mind that Halo is powered by Gamespy. Gamespy's code is in the game, and whatever AVG did seems to have completely and totally blocked anything GS related.

Just stating a fact concerning AVG on my PC,
It constantly caused my Source games to crash.

- Dark Messiah
- HL2, EP1, EP2
- Various Source Mods

The Steam FAQ lists AVG as a problem maker, and suggest to disable or remove it.
For me, disabling AVG and turning off all of it's services didn't help, I had to remove it completely.

Just asking, have you tried a virus scan with another scanner?

Also, Avast is superior to everyone else's scanners

Dad's Norton updated and when he went to restart his PC it wouldn't boot, he had to fresh-install XP

ok it all works on my other user profile O_o

I'm guessing AVG somehow corrupted my computer profile. I'll just take all my info over to my other profile and delete this crap...
