Buying a Tablet/Notebook PC. The ones that can be a regular notebook but swivel to be a tablet, does anyone here got any reccomendations on them. In particular brands, how durable they are and such.
Any insight would be nice. :)
E: Currently I'm looking into this model http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?seg=HHO&poid=410784 Snaf reccomended Toshiba, since they seem to be fairly priced.

Last time I tried them out, they were rather terrible. They might have improved since then, but they're not all they're cracked up to be at all. You're better off buying a Cintiq and attaching it to your computer.

^ Agree.
Generally, they're smaller in size than regular laptops, and the screen is only attached by a little swivel. Easy to screw over. You're better off with a USB tablet.

well the thing is i mainly need a labtop, and i eventually want a tablet... so it jus seemed like the way to go, snaf told me the swivels on toshibas seemed pretty solid, I mean I take care of my shit so I don't think I'd end up breaking it, but I figured I'd ask for some advice... I would by just a full on tablet, but then I can't type, and if i get a full on notebook, then I got no tablet for digital drawing...

I have this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146343) and it's pretty nice. It's pretty tough too, I have dropped it a few times (from about 3-4 feet), and nothing bad happened. It can get a little hot if you don't keep it on a flat surface.

well, Im also tryin to get something with vista and at least 2 gigs of ram, not like amazing but just, up-to-date with current systems, since vista will proabably become more popular eventually.
That ones nice but its xp, and its only got 1 gig of ram.
It also looks thinner, and a little more skinny at the swivel compared to the toshiba im looking at (judging from pictures so who really knows...) yet they both weigh the same ammount (about 4 lbs).
I don't see why the swivel thing should be of too much concern tho if the owner is going to take care of it. I mean sure accidents happen, but most accidents shouldn't include the notebook being open and the swivel being tested for strength.
The only accidents I can see is possibly dropping the bag its in on accident, slight possibility of actually dropping it itself (while closed so the swivel wouldnt be strained much anyway).
I mean like, I'm not gonna be careless with it and try to pick it up by the screen which is only being held on by the swivel...
idk, right now I like the toshiba unless someone else has any suggestions for a better deal, with a simillar hardware configuration.

I think most Tablet PCs run a special version of Windows XP. I'm not sure if there's a Vista Tablet edition yet.

You won't need more than 1 gig of ram on a tablet. You just won't, so don't even bother. Not to mention there is nothing wrong with xp (vista SUCKS), and the thing is about 1 1/4" thick.

The good widescreen Cintiq is about 2k USD. It's worth every penny.

If you are running Vista you will want at least 2 gigs of ram. Bare minimum. If you are using XP 1 gig will be fine.
Also, AFAIK all versions of Vista have support for tablet functionality - I know that Ultimate does anyway.

yea they definately have vista for tablet pcs...
I'm not buying a strait out tablet tho, this is a notebook pc too, like for typeing and stuff when I'm not at home near my desktop (I commute from my home to my college so I'm mostly out there) So I need a laptop, the tablet thing is just something I've been wanting to get.

Nowhere do I see a "Windows Vista Tablet PC Edition" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista_editions).
XP had a tablet edition but Vista has that functionality built into every version.

The features should be built in.

I have had a couple toshibas, a gateway, a dell, and i've toyed with a few others, and I think the toshiba's are the best and most durable. This is personal opinion though...and there are probably better ones out there.
oh and one thing I always do to laptops is try to get my OWN copy of the OS that's not loaded down with advertisements and shit...I know my toshiba had 98 running process on a fresh installation of the OEM vista...

my current xp desktop runs like 29 after a fresh install...
Can't you jus use the cd that it came with or do i really need to go out and buy another copy of vista just to get rid of that crap?
