Guns are restricted here, you can get a two shot gun (like a shotgun) license however you have to have a reasonable reason, such as a game keeper and you hunt the birds, you also have to kill them as humanely as possible. Any other type of gun is illegal, be it handgun to machine guns etc.

Having either the gun or ammo is illegal, you dont have to have both to go to jail.

So what is a semi-automatic pistol, do you mean the ones that can fire either 1 shot, or a burst of shots?

Semi-automatic means you pull the trigger once it only shoots one bullet.
Fully-automatic means hold the trigger for a fountian of brass.

It's semi automatic because after a shot, the weapon automatically chambers a new round, but still needs the trigger to be pulled again to fire.

It means you pull the trigger, it fires once, you pull it again, it fires again. It's no different from the auto except that you have to release the trigger before taking a second shot.
