What is it? Who does it apply to? What do you think it does and SHOULD mean?

I'm curious about what people think about our constitutional right. I'm not questioning freedom of speech, but rather questioning people's interpretations of it. Using only your own knowledge on the first amendment, what do you know about it?

Not American, give approx. 0 stuffs about American law, etc.

Free speech isn't as cool as it sounds, because then all the ignorant fucks can merrily preach their shite and nobody can actually do anything about it. That said, the alternative is pretty shit too, I never did like censorship.

tl;dr have to endure stupidity either way, which makes me sad

Freedom of speech should apply to everyone, whether what they have to say has any value or not. I think that silencing people is bad because what they have to say might be good - you never know. Obviously there will be content put out there that isn't good or doesn't help - hate speech for example, but silencing everyone because a few fuckups made some stupid statements doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Furries - not being people and all, should not recieve this right.
That is just a comment to get people up in arms, <3 Furries.
I think that anyone who follows the law and deserves free speech should have it. Basically, anyone who is a citizen.

As for what it means, I think that free speech should constitute basically anything written, said or thought about. It's kind of hard to censor one's thoughts anyone.
However, I do believe that Caremell Dansen needs to be erased from the internet.

I take free speech in general for granted- I'm allowed to say whatever I want to whomever I want so long as I'm not divulging trade secrets/proprietary information/government classified stuff. It's just a given; it's casually obvious.

So for me, the blurry Free Speech line comes down to net neutrality, wherein I believe the constitution gives me the right to distribute information online without my content being silenced by a third party such as Comcast. However, websites such as youtube or photobucket have every right to filter the content they display because it has been given to them (whereas with my website I am providing the information and Comcast has no right to determine who can and can't view that content).

Thankfully, so far it seems this right to unfiltered content has been upheld, but I'm not sure for how much longer. The privatization of the internet could conceivably allow that sort of filtering to be legal.

Anyway, in summary, to me Free Speech is just an obvious given (which rules), except in the case of information technology, which exists without sufficient precedent.

Comments like these, serious or not, are why I appreciate freedom of speech.

There are a lot of people in the world who would say that and mean it, literally. While I don't really approve of the furry subculture, I don't want to see them getting suppressed by self righteous fools either. If furries got suppressed, who would be next?

Words don't hurt people, actions do. True story.

If furries got suppressed, nobody, since the world would be at peace and everybody would live in perfect harmony. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/CN3089/Emoticons/emot-colbert.gif

What I'm saying is, furries are horrible and should be exterminated. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/CN3089/Emoticons/emot-commissar.gif

You can say whatever the hell you want. You can print whatever the hell you want.

The biggest problem people seem to have understanding the right to free speech nowadays has to deal with the internet. Lets say you make a video and post it on Youtube. You do not have a constitutional right to do so. The owners of Youtube are allowing you to do that. They can do whatever they want with what you give them; be it keep it up or take it down.
