It's been fucking driving me nuts. I've only tried signing onto CS:S, Company of Heroes works fine, but I WANNA PLAY CS! I've looked it up for over an hour on google and found nothing that actually rectifies the problem. I found an old thread from 2006 but the links to the "solution" thread are mysteriously broken.

All my HL1/Goldsource based games on steam won't run under Vista unless I disable DEP - and even then it still is screwy (eg. checkpoints are missed, the tram ride in HL1 gets stuck, etc).
I don't know if XP supports DEP, but try disabling it if it is there.
EDIT: Oh, CS:S. Try reinstalling DirectX or your graphics drivers.

Tried it, didn't work. I also saw on some website to download the Source Dedicated server and replace one of the files but I don't feel like doing that. I already updated to the latest August update.

Well I was browsing this problem once again yesterday and I found a working solution. In all my source games I have the resolution set to 1680x1050 as it is my monitor's native resolution. All I had to do is switch to a different resolution to get rid of the error and once again be able to play my Source engine games. Funny how I never thought to change the resolution before and yet it looks virtually unchanged from the 1680x1050 res since I'm using 1440x1050 resolution.
EDIT: I also found out that not only must the resolution be changed, Windows Live Messenger must be turned off, otherwise you get the error.
L4D is the only game that doesn't have this problem with my preferred settings with MSN on.
I just thought this might help other people.

Thanks, my friend has an integrated ATI Radeon X1250 and he has the same problem (I know his card sucks but for some reason it ran L4D ok (until the horde that is), yet this Internal 3D error kept popping up for CS:S and HL2). I'll inform him, see if this works.
