Seriously, fuck them in the ass. Half-Life 2, ep 1 and 2, and portal crash on me ALL THE FUCKING TIME, TOTALLY RANDOMLY. It doesn't make a difference if I'm running all max settings or all low. Sometimes its a slight hiccup, like the annoying repeating sound thing, screen freezes, I have to wait 2 minutes, then it continues. Sometimes it just dies and closes out on me. Just a bit ago it fucking MEGA froze, had to restart comp. This does not happen when I play TF2 however. Any solutions? The sound thing I know is a common problem, but it's SO annoying when it lasts more than 15 seconds.

Have you tried different DirectX levels, like 8? That might help. Do it by going to properties for the game in the Steam list, then launch options, then -dxlevel 81.

I'll try it, will it reduce the quality at all?

Yes. Mostly in shader stuff, which is noticeable in Orange Box Games (not so much HL2 and Episode One).

Hey jngrow (http://www.modacity.net/forums/member.php?u=1407),
Which error messages do you get?
I had Source games (mainly EP1, EP2 and mods) crashing for me all the time because of AVG, so that's one known problem.
You should also visit the Steam tech support, it does address some of the problems of stuttering and others.

I don't really get any error messages, most of the time it's a massive stutter, or the occasional "hl2.exe has stopped working".

The only way I could get HL2 to work was uninstalling norton. I doubt you have that though.

As much as steam can be annoying, but that seems like a pretty painful choice of playing Half Life. :downs:

If you have AVG, close the control center when running games. It was the cause of a lot of stuttering for me.

I do have AVG, I'll try it, because DX8 makes me sad.

I had to completely uninstall AVG for my Source games to work.
Shutting it down and turning off it's services didn't work for me.
Don't be lazy like I was... it took me some time to uninstall AVG (like Steam support says), wasted time.
I installed AVAST instead and all my games work just fine.

I have AVG, and no problems with source games. I have had the problem you're talking about once, but that was because the game fucked up loading the level or something.
So I just reloaded the level and it all went fine and dandy, instead of crashing in the same place repeatedly.

I'm sorry you have a shitty computer with bad hardware, drivers, and/or but not limited to software and have decided to blame it on the game instead of yourself for not providing a suitable gaming environment for you to play in.
