Please stop pussying out over antitrust and listening to morons overseas who think they know your operating system better than you. The address bar is NOT an Internet Explorer component, you idiots. (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2587494&SiteID=17)

Love, Everyone.

PS: Give me my fucking Address bar back.

tl;dr: Windows XP Service Pack 3 removes the option to add an Address Bar to the taskbar. They claim that they removed it because of an antitrust thing with having Internet Explorer integrated too far into the system. Which is bullshit, since typing an http address into it launches Firefox for me (default browser), and local addresses launch Windows Explorer.

I use the address bar; find any screenshot of my desktop and you'll see it.

So just use Firefox? I'm confused.

Noo dude. He means that Microsoft is acting like the address bar is meant only for Internet when it can infact be used to locate and access almost anything on the PC. Losing the address bar on the taskbar is unjustifiable since it is capable of running stuff that has nothign to do with internet explorer at all.

It may not be the same in all versions of IE, but usually the address bar while using Explorer can be used to access the web. Open up a folder and type in a website, and it should work.

This is still a really dumb move IMO

I find it funny that people bitch when microsoft does something even marginally anticompetitive and then they bitch some more when they finally comply with antitrust laws.

Although yes, it does seem stupid that they would remove that feature. Guess they are playing it safe.

Even I have a problem with this, and I don't use Windows.

...when they finally comply with antitrust laws. There's a difference between complying with a law and being completely paranoid about some ramblings from suits overseas. :tinfoil:

Here's where it makes no sense: If I type a local address into it, it launches Windows Explorer and brings me to that folder, given that it exists. If I type in an HTTP address, it launches my default web browser (in this case, firefox) and directs it to the entered address.

Clicking Start and hitting Run provides me with a dialog box that does the same damn thing. The address bars in Windows Explorer windows do the same thing. The taskbar address toolbar is still present in Windows Vista.

I'm baffled by this logic. If violation of an antitrust law is such a horrible sin, wouldn't they have patched Vista already with an autoupdate?

I guess I don't get it. What's this address bar? Obviously there's one on browsers but on Windows? Don't see it and never used it.

[EDIT] Found it...never had it on though.

.. *uses xp sp3 and still has an address bar*

eh?

I did install it recently, maybe not fully updated?

idk...

All I kno is if this happens I'm complaining and bitching first, then I'm uninstalling sp3 and rolling back to SP1 why? Because sp2 refused to work on my pc no matter what since its been released. (my processor didn't like it... thats the short version).

medium version, I installed sp2, my computers processor went to 100% usage, well actually 50% because I had hyper threading turned on (pc is from 2003... prolly even older version processor...) and no matter what I did I couldn't solve the problem

Long version (but summarized) I spent about a month going to diff tech forums (even posted on gbx tech forum not this one tho this was a while ago) and asked what the problem could be, no one seemed to know, the only thing that matched the "symptoms" was an "interupt storm" which requires a complicated explination to what that even is, some people suggested it could be the bios, but I've never done anything related to bios updates, and I hear you can seriously fuck up your pc (won't turn on..) if you use the wrong version or somthing.

In the end I just used xp sp1 until recently I formated tried sp3 and it worked just fine (hooray..).

Upgrade to Vista, problem solved.

true, except my pc only has 1 gig of ram, and its like the old ram, don't know if I can even buy it in sticks that are 1 gig sized (only have 2 slots for ram) not worth it tbh, my gfx card is kind of fail nowadays anyway.

can't wait till I get my laptop...

What? I've got two XP SP3 machines that are fully updated that still have an Address Toolbar option for the taskbar... Vista has it as well.

... I see what they did there.

Did you happen to replace browseui.dll with the SP2 version?

At any rate, I found an easy way around it after browsing around a bit. However, any time I reboot, the address bar disappears. :|

The ball isn't really in MS's court here. It's the idiotic and computer illiterate judicial system.

Maybe it's the opposite: they hated people using THEIR address bar to open other web browsers besides THEIR own browser. They got rid of it to make it harder for that to happen.

But I really don't know. Using Vista I don't have this problem at all, but I think it's strange too...
