David Heiss, 21, allegedly flew from his home near Frankfurt to murder 20-year-old Matthew Pyke after they met on the internet.
Mr Pyke, who ran his own online chat forum dedicated to gaming, was found by his girlfriend Joanna Witton in the flat they shared in Nottingham city centre last Friday. He had been stabbed several times.
A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "He (the suspect) is going to Frankfurt today for the start of extradition proceedings.
"We are questioning him with German police."
A senior detective from the force has been in Germany since earlier in the week, the spokeswoman added.
Police in both Germany and Nottinghamshire, who have refused to confirm the suspect's name, have said Mr Pyke met his alleged killer on the internet.
Nottinghamshire Police, were alerted to Heiss after he posted messages on the internet. He was arrested by German police on Wednesday night.
In a posting on the Facebook page of Miss Witton at 10.32pm on Tuesday, Heiss wrote: "I will pray for you, Jo. You must be suffering unbelievable pains. I'm sorry for having caused so much trouble lately.
"I hope you won't lose all your hope. We will be there for you."
Facebook users can also tell friends what they are doing at any given time. In his tag, Heiss wrote, "Will pray for everybody involved."
Mr Pyke ran a website dedicated to the Nintendo game Advanced Wars under the alias name of Shade. On the forum gamers can chat with one another about tactics, characters and plots.
Mr Pyke, originally from Stowmarket, Suffolk, was about to start a degree course at Nottingham Trent University. He moved to the city two years ago and is understood to have started a physics course at Nottingham Trent but then dropped out.
In a statement released through Nottinghamshire Police, German police said: "Limburg-Weilburg police have arrested a 21-year-old man from the rural district of Limburg.
"He was arrested by officers from the West-Hessen police headquarters in Hunfelden on suspicion that on 19 September he killed a man in Nottingham with a knife. They got to know each other through the internet."
The statement added: "The man has been extensively interviewed by Limburg CID at the petition of the public prosecutor in Limburg.
"He was brought before the Limburg judge who gave an order of detention with a view to extradition.
"Co-operation between police at headquarters and Nottinghamshire Police was very smooth and most successful. The joint investigation is still on-going and will be referred to Nottinghamshire Police."
Heiss says on his Facebook page that he works as a "jack of all trades" and "general dogsbody".
He described his interests as women and said he held liberal political views.
There have been a number of online tributes to Mr Pyke.
A man known only as Eggy who helped Mr Pyke run his website, wrote: "I wish I could write more on the matter, but I am currently not feeling up to it. The loss of a great friend, and fellow admin has been very hard to bare (sic).
"Matt, you were a great friend, and a great man. I'm not normally at a loss for words, but this is something where I just cannot speak. I cannot image (sic) this place without you. You touched so many hearts.
"I wish I could write more but I just can't. In the near future I will. The world will know what a great man Matt was. May you rest in peace, my friend."well fuck me.
